@@IronThumbs Some have said that people would be too offended by this show if it aired today, but I don't think that's true. Sure, the show pokes fun at disabled people, trans people, gay people, etc., but never in a way that comes across as mean or condescending. Family Guy, South Park and F is for Family arguably have much worse jokes in that regard, yet they've all had success. EDIT: Also the main target of ridicule in The Oblongs is rich, white racists, something I don't think anyone would have an issue with today.
It's a shame this show was pulled so early. The humor wasn't any more offensive than Family Guy or South Park. I think people were put off by the main cast being physically disabled...kind of ironic. It would be nice if it were given another chance. Maybe even as a web series? I wonder what the creator's original intentions for the show were...
angus said only 10% of his ideas got into the show. boy, makes me wonder how brutal and harsh this show couldve been if angus had full control over the story. and i think the show kind of declined after the first several episodes. you can tell at which point in the show angus gave up coming in the writers' room. the episode plots started to lose their "weird"-ness and some episodes can honestly have the same plotline even if the cast were just normal not-mutated people. though the show was nice when it was still alive imo its just sad it didnt have much time to improve.
I don't think many people would dislike the show for that reason, while the characters are deformed, they're still in a cartoon where it's not that unsightly
@@Kaboomboo honestly though? It is impressive but...listening to these producers and knowing how stubborn younger artists can be, I can't help but wonder if that played into it. These people took the show in the right direction (at first anyway).
Sad about a few things: 1. Angus didn't really get his vision shown 2. They didn't interview Will 3. They didn't talk Prestine or Debbie's voice actor 4. This show only had 13 eps
The 4th point is kind of funny to me considering the original book which the show is based on is called “Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children” though I do agreee that everyone needs to see more of this show even if it’s a spin off.
Maybe someday he'll bring in his vision in a full reboot. I mean recently most old adultswim shows have been coming back with either a special, movie, shorts, or another season.
I feel as though the final product was way more lighthearted than the books ever were, and that must have been the creator's main gripe. I understand why the show ended up so much more different
Not gonna lie, as much as I respect Angus' original work and style I think I still would've ended up preferring what we have now over a dark and depressing version Oblongs is enjoyable because it's lighthearted despite the environment. Freaks of nature still smiling and laughing despite where society has placed them
Agreed. I especially thought the book's illustrations were beautiful, but I really don't think that sort of dark comedy needed to be animated in full form. I would like to have seen some Heavier (as in more *sincere* rather than more disturbing) episodes eventually. But this is one of the first times looking back at a show's production where I can say I'm glad the studio took the reins.
Look, can we stop bullcrapping around and get a petition started to at least get Adult Swim to play this show on a regular basis? We could go out and buy the DVD, but I'd much rather watch it on television. The Oblongs IMO kills about 70-75% of the junk [AS] shows anyway.

Exactly. Having read the original book I have to say this was one example of the network being right. With me or time, I thought the show could have been a really good execution of the book's main theme, gloomy stories that are almost as difficult to watch as they are to look away from. There's never been a show quite like it since.
The fact that the woman who plays mutated Peggy finished her readings covered in her own saliva is hilarious and also shows how hard they have to work sometimes.
This was the WB's shot at having the Simpsons and they blew it. 😂 Great show and I agree with the casting director--the positive/social satire spin the writers put on the original vision was part of what made this show so memorable.
