    Great review. We have an X1 but they are great to tow and work really well if you want to camp and live outside (rather than spend your time inside a caravan). As you said, they are a brilliant hub for camping and touring.

    I just brought my new X2 home to Minnesota this week. I've had a AT Horizon for 10 years. The X2 has surprising amount of storage for its size. Wish the top would open like my Horizon to give complete access to inside but you can't get everything you want. I spend 4 months / year living in (around) my trailer in Death Valley National Park. Can't wait to get this new X2 sorted and headed west for the winter! Agree with the post that calls out the water delivery system (worst part of the trailer).. I'll have to rethink that and start wrenching! Also, mine came with the new HUGE 270 degree awning. Might be too much awning for the wind in DVNP...

    Great trailer, I always wanted one since they first comes out.
    But really, for the price it is (40-50k as i remember), as an average person who makes 50-60k/yr, I would rather spend money on ultralight camping gears to lighten up my vehicle, and use the rest of the money to ship my car to africa or south america and explore the world more, 40K would last a long time. But that's just me and my thoughts.
    I think the debate of the price of X2 comes down to how often you gonna use the trailer, if I'm on the road 200 day a year like Ronny. I would say buying the X2 is money bloody very well spend, without any doubt. But if I only have limited time to travel each year, which is the most of us, I probably will spend less on a trailer that I only use twice a year, and more for other things, maybe upgrade my car or buy a new camera or drone.

    This is a great camper and quality is brilliant. It’s fit for purpose without doubt.
    The issue I found with this design was the access to storage was painful, setup was long and limited to go off grid for more than a week. Water being the main restriction.
    Got a Lifestyle Camper - Reconn 2; now that’s next level compare to this and also 100% Aussie made

    The cooker should slide out to the right through the rear panel keeping same height and angle allowing you to use its recess as more bench space while cooking. I know boat's.

      @@Camhin1 Hmmm, also somebody has to pay for all the money Justin and his family/team spend on self-indulgent overseas trips and R&D on things like the MegaRam and 6x6 Landcruiser...not to mention their TV exploits. Somebody has to pay for all that and it looks like it's gunna be the buyers of the trailers and custom-built trucks.

    I’ve never used one, but a few improvements I can think of are: move the sliding pantry to the top as you pointed out, add a cargo slide to the left side of the rear cargo area to help access items,

    My main gripe was the jockey wheel, tho you can ignore the rings on it and mount forward enough to open the man cave, most trips I don’t end up dropping the trailer anyways.
    The cables for the hatches are a pain when they don’t line up they can eat at the rubber seal, switched to small chains and it’s been working great !

    Alternative cooker to consider would be the Coleman Dual Fuel rather than LPG gas cooker - is storm proof cooking, dont have to carry LPG gas (which must be stored on outside of vehicle and can quietly leak and leave an empty bottle) but instead using shellite (which I can store in several 1L containers inside vehicle).

    Just been up to Cape York from sw WA via Adelaide, Birdsville and Tasmania. Towing a Drifta WUHT trailer behind the GU. Love the camper, it cost a bit more at just over 50k, it's heavier but it is better equipped.
    Once you get "your system" of living out of a camper sorted out they are great. Been away for 4 months today. A much better idea than stuffing swags plus everything else into your car.
    Big tip: don't bring EVERYTHING. You just don't need it!

  • @jnxius
    @jnxius 5 років тому +1

    On the Main Cargo compartment, they could just add a cargo slide on the left. That would make packing/reaching your stowed gear really easy and still use the back door as a dinner table or whatever. This might change how people prioritize what they store there since it would be just as easy (almost) to get items as anywhere else on the trailer.

    • @Ronny_Dahl
      @Ronny_Dahl  5 років тому

      I did think about that myself but loose things could get jammed or trapped plus it would take up space and add weight. I think as is might be the best way for the cargo side of things

    Wish I could afford one of the Patriot trailers. I’ve built an off road camper trailer myself, because I couldn’t afford an X1. It’s pretty awesome and extremely useful, but no way near as sophisticated as the Patriot ones. There is so much work involved in the process. And metal is NOT cheap these days! Ronny, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said you get what you pay for. I wish Patriot Campers would come out with a cheaper bare bones model that could be added to as needed. I guess the closest thing to that is the X1-n, but it’s still $30K USD. Here in the US you can buy a nice Turtleback trailer for a lot less, but they seem a bit heavier and not quite as off road capable.

  • @TheSkskitey
    @TheSkskitey 5 років тому +2

    It's certainly a light compact camper trailer with plenty of storage and rugged enough for off-road use . With the top tent also it's a winner for me but i think the price is a bit much but like you said your getting what you pay for . Starting around $30,000 and you could end up at $40,000+ with a few extras is a bit pricey for me :-)

    Haha i bet Justin is watching this Video very closely, to hear what you have to say ;P
    Im all for the quality and manufacting made and done in Australia,
    With the publicity, the camper gets with XO and Patriot games im sure it does well.
    But.... that price tag, im sorry, for me isnt justyable, (or out of my price range......for a camper).
    Thanks for the Vid Ron.

    Thanks for doing such a comprehensive and unbiased review mate... I was a bit surprised as to the fuel economy of your Landscruisers though. ...I drive a 5,000kg Chev Silverado and tow a 3,500kg Bushtracker...and I used around 22L/100 crossing the Nullabor doing 100k/h constantly into a headwind. Done a lot of research, and yes you get what you pay for, and it is without a doubt 100% quality. That being said and I say this not because I can’t afford it but I don’t believe it is that sort of money to build (if it’s in the 40 thou mark) even taking research and development into account. Again still one of the best units every built.

    Excellent review of the X2! I as an owner of an X2 I would agree that the awning is likely the worst part and that is easily remedied with a different one. Its a purposely overbuilt camper and that is why it gets the awards and positive reviews. Its also why other companies are making other similar variants, to keep up.

  • @donleamon8653

    The US distributor has what appears to be the base model X2 available at $26k USD. I'd be curious to know how well they are selling. I would be interested in one of their PCOR trays if/when I replace my slide in Four Wheel Camper for a flatbed version (though we do have a couple other options here). Our pickup beds waist so much usable space when used as a off-roading platform.

    Top review, just a question, it didn’t look like a great awning, but it also didn’t seem like you pitched it like I have seen in the PC videos, seemed only half extended, Id think I’d change it anyways, also you don’t mention PC offer different tent options with room attachments for kids, they may not be as slick as the JB tent eg soft shells but have seen families use X2 in this config. Well tested review and def know it’s been given the beans on the tracks. Seems a couple of things are a bit light, Id think Id want a couple of Lithium batteries as an upgrade, a BMS over the manager 30 and a 1000w inverter, decent awning, better cooker, the draw not an issue for me though a good idea to move it to the top, Id carry a light weight table in the rear storage compartment if it was being used as a hub cooking area anyway for more than 2 people. Get yourself a dry bag to store your beach gear dirty clothes in to throw in those compartments they are cheap at any sports store camping store and those are great compartments for storage of dirty gear but still save in cleaning later. just my PG tips tip of the day 🤪 sad I know that advertisement lmao. Maybe you didn’t get that on in Aus, def the US lads and ladies won’t get that irony 😂👻 You missed the Webber Q compartment though. Happy trails great review overall. 👍

    2nd that with waeco, i went from an 80L engel to a dual zone 75 waeco just for sizing and the dual zone mainly. 80L used to chew about 6amps. But the waeco uses up to 9amps. Had to upgrade solar panel also to 250w so it can keep up recharging wise through my dc dc charger.

    • @Ronny_Dahl
      @Ronny_Dahl  5 років тому +1

      Yeah it also runs a lot more than the Engel which means it will be running 9amps for longer than an Engel only drawing 6amps

    • @Mosesk1988
      @Mosesk1988 5 років тому

      @@Ronny_Dahl that is also true, looking at my bluetooth dongle conected to rear shows how much solars going in and where current is being drawn from battery it runs alot, its almost as if it drops 1 degree it starts up to cool it down. Engels probs give it a 3 or so before it start up and cool im thinking. Engels probs sealed a bit better also imo. But wouldnt go back love the dual zone for conveniance and size wise. Love ya work mate 👌, much as im a nissan fan boy haha.

    another option with these south african type expedition trailer is the Metalian. Bowhunter is the size of X2; and Parthian is the size of x1 - both built out completely in CR12 structural stainless steel as used mines in South Africa. never rust and everthing including water tank is enclosed within the whole trailer body, so nothing to damage when drag over terrain. Its not as fancy as Patriot though but the price is much easier to swallow and the design is just as good as Patriot is not better in some respects;
    I would pair with a ikamper hardshell tent for sleeping 3 adults or family of 4 as long as kids 10 or under;
    aside from price, the only other thing i dont like about patriot is the latches - its the wrong design for the way the doors are closed on sides and back - instead pulling them into the trailer body, all they do is pulling up and exerting elongating forces on the hinges;

    Cool trailers no doubt. But for 50k plus I'd rather, get a 300mm chassis extension on my 79 series cruiser and build a similar set up in a canopy with a roof top tent. No extra baggage pulling this along on tracks that way. In my opinion though, I love camping the old fashioned way, doing it rough a little bit. That's what its all about, if i wanted all the luxuries of home. I'd stay there

I needed a trailer that did not hinder my ability to get into really “hard to get to” places and the X2 does everything so easily. It seems that if you've got something bulky you want to bring along, like bikes, canoes, a small tinny etc, you'd find it difficult, if not impossible, to strap it on top (obviously cause of the tent). Your average soft or hard floor camper would be better suited for that. Ronny?

  • @christurner68

    Mate, a bit of a contradiction to going to land cruiser hubs and not being able to fit the correct tyres you need as a spare. This is why I didn’t buy the x2 after they removed the tyre from the rear carrier like the x1. I understood why they did it, because of too much weight on the rear of the trailer causing to shimmy a long the road when towing. Not enough ball weight.........

    • @billroach2393
      @billroach2393 5 років тому

      To fit the 35 under the trailer he could have just given the trailer a 25mm lift overall, using spring spacers. A 35" is around 20mm wider than a 33" tyre, so raising the trailer 25mm would've done the job and maintained the same ground clearance underneath the trailer....or am I over-simplifying things?

    Patriot campers should build a forward fold so you got somewhere to live sit eat etc as these campers unless your in bed your in the dirt it's just a rooftop tent on a trailer really and yeah don't make it 75k...just a thought....

    Thanks for your review Ronny. I'm glad you mentioned up front you didn't pay for this trailer. Respect.
    However....I believe unless you put your OWN hard earned down....any views or opinions don't carry much water especially when don't mention anywhere the price of this thing.
    Everything is relative to price.
    Not being able to afford and not seeing the value in...are 2 very different things.
    Love all your vids.

    Their ability is just simple fantastic.
    Would I buy one.
    Simply, no. Because I won’t use it for what it is intended for.
    Is it worth the $58k+ for the X1H for example. If you do extreme outback, absolutely. Not even questionable.
    If your like me, love good camp sites and do the odd few nights free camping, then no.

      @@Ronny_Dahl The website for that product has this to say for the latest version: 'T'he new DO35 Version 3 (DO35v3) is the strongest coupling we have ever made; it even bent our test rig!' I am not surprised you have had no problems with your DO35. :-) So they have 'versions' which implies they believe in improving their product and not sitting on their hands. Also, looking at their website, lighter versions (to keep the weight down) for lighter tasks, heaver versions for heavy duty tasks, and even an improved silent version of the standard NATO ring coupling - which will put a mile on the face of many who have had to use those.

    Meh, I try to be a minimalist, less weight the better my truck performs less money to spend on upgrading components to handle more weight. If I was to get a trailer it’s just to haul stuff while overlanding, for the price of the X2 I could custom build a trailer that is just for hauling my camping stuff so I have less on the truck and still have money left over. Ronny, you should do a video on which one is better, wide or narrow tires?
