NYC has an extensive underground steam system that provides steam to buildings in the city for heating, humidifying, and sanitizing. idk if it’s a leak or planned venting but that’s what those big orange chimneys in the middle of the street are doing.
I see these all the time and think nothing of them so her reaction was hilarious, it’s like, yeah, to anyone that isn’t familiar this shit looks like a portal to hell in the middle of the street lol
@@JimNortonsAlcoholism Probably a leak in the process of being fixed. I have never heard of ConEdison purposely venting steam in all my years living in New York. What would be the purpose of venting in the middle of the street?
Welll... not uncontroversial. I respect Maya but i'm against ALL Zoos with regular visitors and the requirements should be sooo much higher, so not too happy that Maya is ok with - some - regular zoos. (I wouldn't spread hate in the comments obviously, just say my opinion respectfully, but others might)
Greenwich Village resident here and I gotta say you did a great job on this trip! A lot of tourists never make it out of midtown, but you got down to the Village and had some of the best pizza in the city (us locals go earlier in the week when the lines are smaller). Shame you apparently didn't hit Washington Square Park but that's what future visits are for. Nice to see you taking note of all the urban wildlife - pigeons rule! - and taking the subway and appreciating our public transit. Some tourists are irrationally afraid of the subway. And yes Central Park rules, like the Met it's practically a city in itself, hope you get to see other sections of it in the future. Protip: get one of those little portable fans to pull out when you're baking in heat, it's great in subway stations. Cheers!
A lot of toursists don't leave Manhattan, but there's a lot of cool stuff outside of Manhattan too, like the Bronx has a much better zoo than the one in Central Park and there's a lot of cool sights in Brooklyn too
THE STEAM is a system over 100y old tht provides heat to buildings and also has some other commercial uses which is why it’s still on in summer idk y why it leaks above ground in some places tho
When the system has more steam in it than is being used by the city they vent it out like that so there isn't a pressure explosion that kills everyone.
I laughed so freaking hard at the commentary and editing! Maya, thank you for the urban animal/bug review! I loved it! Also, SPACE or WAHIDO (I am so so sorry for butchering this), or whoever edited this, YOU ARE SO GOOD, you made my day dude. Also, pokemon choice: Psyduck...dude is such a cute confused little dude, but powerful, so can relate to the first part.😊
@@gownerjones For water vapor to be visible like that doesn't require boiling at all, that isn't even steam at all, steam is actually invisible the white clouds you see are water droplets suspended in the air aka water vapor. That's why you can see it coming off stuff like hot food, the food obviously isn''t at 100 degrees celsius since you don't scald your flesh when you eat it
@@Dell-ol6hb First, steam and water vapor are the same thing. The definition of steam is literally "the vapor into which water is converted when heated, forming a white mist of minute water droplets in the air". Secondly, the only two mechanisms that can make a sewer steam is either if the air coming out of the sewer is significantly warmer than the ambient air, same mechanism that makes your breath visible in winter, or if you boil the sewer. Since nobody is boiling any sewers, it could only possibly be the first one. Currently, it is summer in New York. That means the outside temperature is likely a few degrees hotter than the air in the sewers since sewers are underground. That means it's pretty much impossible for the sewers to create these steam plumes in this video. You can see steam coming from hot food because hot food is significantly hotter than the ambient temperature. This is not the case for sewer air in the summer.
TWO (2!) luggage spins?! Oh, happy day! I love when you do these voiceover type videos. Keep them coming at the pace you deme fit, please and thank you!
theoretically, if you show the natural history museums 30 mins before they close and use the bathroom by the entrance and then just keep walking confidently you can sneak in and see the bugs for free don't ask me how I know

The steam is literally water vapor. Manhattan has been using a steam heat transfer system for heating (and cooling) buildings and for disinfecting its sewers since 1800-something. It's both cool and incredibly dystopian looking because you associate steam with exhaust/smog. Also, editing is like 10/10 on this.
