It's a fair test that shows how much of the rev range is useful - sure it may have 240hp or whatever at 8000+rpm, but would you want to drive a car that needs to be downshifted each time you want to accelerate? Also think about that - small fuel tank + needing high revs all the time = what?

    • @SheepInACart
      @SheepInACart 3 роки тому +25

He also floors it up the peak of the power curve later in the video, and while it pulls better, all the other cars shown absolutely walk away... the test was perfectly valid, it just offends preconceptions that put the car on a podium for being an icon, even with a race driver taking many laps to hone track times, the S2000 was NEVER a particularly fast car, like the Maiata (MX5 in other regions) that wasn't the point, it was fun to steer and shift hard at comparatively low speeds on twisty back rounds and mountain passes... stock its a dead fish on the US highway filled with large displacement V8 barges.

As an mr2 owner i love the s2000 too, and i totally get this, its so funny when you hear people comparing 30k cars to 90k cars and expect them to be the same.. You know how many times ive heard people saying oh the mr2 should have had a twin turbo v6 cause its weak, oh the s2000 had to be a turbo from the factory stock form is too weak, not even taking in mind that 248hp out of an NA two liter I4 was way ahead of its time for years to come. And im there like dude, you know that if it was like this these cars would be way more expensive to buy than what they were right? and people just cant process that xD its even funnier when you hear people saying these things while driving cars not even remotely close to sw20s or s2000s...

Rob, I’ve been following you for 14 years now and I have a lot of respect for what you have to say, but you missed the mark on this one.
Straight line speed isn’t the point of this car, and you’re certainly not going to be fast when you’re in 6th gear. The car has 162 lb. ft. of torque.
It’s also not a GT car. Personally I completely disagree about how comfortable the seats are, but its primary focus isn’t to be comfortable like an S Class.
I’d encourage you to drive one on a backroad or on a track, or just actually make more of an effort to wind it out around town. I’ve dailied mine for three and a half years now and the shortcomings are more than enough made up for by how fun it is to drive. And it can be fun to drive around town if you drive it correctly.

Per my pictures, I dropped it off with 67420 miles on it after staying in Rockford for a few days for a wedding. Cool coincidence!

Many people are commenting that, and I'm guessing yall didn't actually watch the video much further, since when the other cars line up for a highway pull he nails nearly at peak power (saying "and before anybody comments, even with Vtech, its still slow)... and sure enough the other cars walk away like he'd forgotten to take it off cruise control. At nearly 100miles and hour there just isn't much acceleration out a bone stock 2L naturally aspirated car designed mid 90's... this is the most power of that niche, but above 60mph the cheap and boring cars of 2-3x its engine displacement do just pull a lot harder even for the same vintage. The S2000 in stock trim would feel amazing top down on a tight canyon road... but commuting on the highway its just slow to a modern audience, and shifting like your trying to race just doesn't make that enjoyable, even if its mildly less lethargic when you do.

    A. Its a Honda. An old Honda. Its going to feel cheap.
    B. You floor any 2.0 NA engine in 6th gear and it isn't gonna go anywhere.
    3. The damn car is 21 years old. Of course it isn't going to hold up to modern cars.
    D. No shit the seats are bad. You are supposed to throw this car around corners not recline in your La-Z-Boy.
    6. Shut up about the small cockpit. It's a small convertible. Put the top down and hang your damn arm out the window.
    17. Guy expects V8 performance out of a 4 cylinder? Get real.
    G. You gripe about it needing premium gas? Something about a super high-revving, high compression engine needing predicable burning fuel. Who would've thought?

100% agree, I love the S2000. Such an iconic car and he’s being super harsh on it. You have a good point on it being 21 years old. It’s meant to be a throw around corner, not a custom interior NSX. Some people really need to have a more open mind like rob.

Honda S2000 is a small convertible built for attacking some back roads or a race track. Complains that it is uncomfortable on the interstate. Complains about lack of power trying to do a pull in 6th. Complains about the lack of interior space. Complains that it is cheap on the inside. You're missing the point on what this is. It's supposed to be an affordable, fun car. Not something you take on long road trips. It's like taking an off roader to the racetrack and then complaining that it is too big, heavy, and has too much body roll. It wasn't designed to do that, so it's not going to be good at it.

Owner of an '01 S2000 and '91 NSX here. the S2000 is way more fun at lower (more legal) speeds because it's stiffer has a shorter wheelbase, and makes more noise. The NSX in comparison is quieter, more reserved, far more comfortable with softer suspension and more noise dampening. The S2000 you really do have to drive it like you stole it for it to be any fun (i.e. 6000RPM+) and while it's not fast in a straight line, it sure is fun to throw around and not worry about totaling a super expensive car (mine has also been modified to dial out a lot of the snap oversteer the early models were known for). Personally, I think both cars could use superchargers but they're both plenty fun for different reasons.

The S2000 is a Miata on steroids. Both are cramped, loud, not really meant to be driven for 6 hours on the interstate. Rob is just driving this car out of its element. Although his comments about the ergonomics/space is valid, I've always felt more comfortable in a Miata, the S2000 is cramped.
Personally I love that 9000rpm screamer of an engine, its just that you have to drive it like you effing hate it. Keep the revs above 5000rpm(maybe more like 6000rpm on the higher redline early year ones). Flooring it at 4000rpm like in a normal car like Rob did means you are "off the cam" and it feels like a slow civic.

  • @logwind

I drove an AP2 for seven years. Found the seats and the cockpit in general very comfortable. I like smaller interiors in a performance car. The S2000 isn't fast but fast enough to have some fun on the street. Most of us aren't driving Ferraris so you're coming from a different perspective.
