- So, this Terraria weapon is actually insane now... The Super Star Shooter. In this video, I take a look at mid mechanic boss powerful ranged weapon that has received a massive buff in the Terraria 1.4.4 update. This weapon has always been pretty good, but rarely used due to how expensive it fallen star ammunition is. The question is, with these new buffs added, is this now insanely powerful weapon actually worth the effort now? Lets take a look!

If you plan on using this during a playthrough, I'd recommend gathering fallen stars everytime there's a meteor shower. You'll end up with way more stars each time and you'll slowly have enough by hardmode without it feeling like a grind.
Edit: Yea you can build a platform across the map and I'm sure it'd work better in the long run but the point of my suggestion was to make gathering stars not feel like a grind. So it's personal preference whether or not you wanna take the extra time to build a skybridge for more efficiency or just casually run across the surface.

I always do this anyways, just entered hardmode at a normal rate of progression (maybe 10 hours in?) and i've picked up over 450 stars without really going out of my way to get them
You can make a bridge under space that is the length of the map and pick up all the stars real fast I love being able to use stars as ammo this game is so good
In the new "dontclimbup" seed, the usability is a little more bearable since... pots have stars, slimes have stars - you're swimming in the darn things.

Yeah... too bad if you play on the Zenith seed this weapon becomes utter garbage because almost every single boss reflects the star projectiles.

the tail of the destroyer when it is coiled up is such a big and easy target. I got like 30-50k dps easily. such an amazing weapon.

I’d recommend taking a look at the Christmas tree sword. I’ve found it to be a massively underrated weapon.

I believe this is a well deserved buff for the Super Star Shooter! Now it's even better than ever and it can handle scores of enemies without so much as breaking a sweat! As you've made mention in the video, yeah, the fallen stars are going to be quite a hassle to farm but at least they're farmable! I'd say it's more of a trade-off since it does so gosh darn well!

exactly, plus when you consider that fallen stars aren't particularly useful to non-mage builds, you might as well shoot out the stars in your chest by a powerful gun

On the remix seed it's actually really easy to farm stars since slimes can carry then. A typical mob farm passively doubles as a star farm, and slimes from King slime count too making him a decent source of stars.
Some have mentioned already but with meteor showers you can get quite a bit of fallen stars overtime. I tend to do what I call 'surface runs' before a night ends if I can to save up, I usually end up with a couple hundred by hardmode, then more mobility = more stars. I do think it's a 'niche' weapon still, more of a novelty weapon really, defo worth picking up if you've never considered due to stars :)
Oh, I did that all the time when I was working on a mediumcore master FTW playthrough, it's an insane strategy for sure considering how simple it is!
The main advantage to having a weapon like this in the game is for Master mode + challenge seed runs. If some boss begins walling you off, you can always rely on the star cannon(s) to put your DPS slightly ahead of progression to give you the boost you need to continue.

I've always found using this (and it's little brother) a great tool for the Old One's Army event. It's great for busting through the event, in my eyes, earlier than you're supposed to. Due to the event's horizontal nature and slow moving enemies, chilling next to the center gem and waiting for a massive line of enemies to form on either side set up HUGE damage potential. Three or four stars to each side clears them off, leaving only a few severely weakened high health enemies that can be quickly picked off. By destroying the crowds it opens up potential for other weapons to shine, especially those that lack piercing and AOE since the damage is now guaranteed to hit your target instead of a low threat mook.
Poor Destroyer, it gets destroyed by the newly buffed Night's Edge and Super Star Shooter now
I wont be surprised if Destroyer becomes the most cheesable boss of the decade

DPS? Comparable to Post-Skeletron and early Hardmode guns
Functionality? Easy to aim with fast projectiles on top of infinite pierce with the right ammo
Obtainability? Pre-boss, just a desert's trip away
Susteinability? Get the fossil set and you can infinitely dupe its ammo.

Sandgun only sounds like a fun run, in Classic... In Expert it sounds like a challenging run. In Master it sounds like a painful run, and in "Legendary" it sounds like you need to get away from your computer you've clearly gone insane. However... Sand stacks to 9999 now...
@@livedandletdie The Sandgun has the biggest DPS for almost anything on that stage game; I've done all the pre-hardmode bosses with Sandgun on Expert before and they're trivial.
Seriously, look up its stats. It's genuinely comparable to the Hellwing Bow or the Phoenix Blaster, post-Skeletron weapons that are used vs the WoF on top of having infinite pierce. If you put rails on the bottom of the arena then the sand isn't a problem as it wouldn't spawn and would just drop as an item. It's a genuinely underated weapon

(Though thankfully they still work on invasions)
On a standard playthrough as a non ranger characters I'll still gather and use at least 1000 fallen stars prehardmode because I spend a lot of time fishing. When it rains I stop and catch 60+ worms per storm, then use it to catch another 1000 Honeyfins which I use as healing potions and cook into sea food dinners to maintain a constant teir 2 well fed buff. I also like gathering the fishing quest/lava fishing furniture and maxing out my fishing load out (lava proof tackle bag, angler tackle bag, angler earring, glowing fishing bobber)
Haven’t had a chance to use it but I think the nail gun is still my favorite for mobbing and bosses, although it’s a bit harder to obtain

When playing in modded, I've found the star weapons to be a lot more interesting with Alchemist NPC. One of the NPCs added sells you stars, and while buying loads of them costs a ton, it's much easier to farm money or even just passively gain it over time. In my opinion, a much better trade-off to be able to use a powerful weapon.
Ah the star cannon, a weapon nerfed, buffed, nerfed again, buffed and nerfed again, and then given ascension in the form of a whole new upgrade.

buff to destroyer (for expert mode): the destroyers heath is halved but the probes can give off protection auras (they look like Martian Probe scanning auras) that disables piercing to any (or pacifies summons for a second) projectile that they see. Probes will also spread away from each other and the player to cover as much area as possible in the arena and to not get get immediately destroyed.
For the lulz the destroyer could have a second phase in legendary mode. When the destroyer is destroyed all of the probes (plus an extra 30) will start to make a projection of a Mechanized Brain of Cthulhu called "The Projection". The Projection is indestructible and acts as a meat shield for the probes witch will move around the brain periodically to shoot. Piercing projectiles or lasers from probes don't go through on The Projection). Damaged probes will rush the player similar to the eye then explode like dynamite (griefing is on) after beeping on the player. If the The Projection takes too much damage it will stop being a projection and become real (you can tell it's real because it will now look real) and Probes will suicide bomb NPC's and the player (griefing is on). The now real Projection will now act like BoC in it's second phase but instead of teleporting it will shoot a Big Red Moon Lord Laser and the former Projection cannot be told the difference from it's illusions (hint: Illusions do not fire a Big Red Moon Lord Lasers).

I would recommend looking for things that reduce the use of ammo, even if it is the ammo box, you can greatly increase your number of stars fired

For players who want a quick way of getting stars, just build an entire platform of hoik blocks going to the middle of your world and connect the hoik blocks with timers. And yes the entire process is tedious.
Yea the conveyor belts is a bit easier
good weapon for if you have stars anyways, use it for bosses and have a backup weapon just in case you run out of ammo
By the way you can make a skybridge hoik to hoik fallen stars to a specific location in your world, it's much cheaper than conveyor belts and can be done pre-hardmode so you don't have to deal with wyverns!
But it takes 10 years and probably your soul to build

This was perfect for journey skyblock, infinite ammo made this weapon so good for old one’s army and other hardmode events, and the mech bosses were easy as hell
With the subscriber ratio thing:
Analytics can really get in your head and while of course, respect the grind and all that, I wouldn't want to see too much stress caused by it.
One thing I think that it helps to remember with the subscriber ratio thing, is that while a very low % of subscribers could be taken to mean that those subscribed aren't watching your videos much, it can also be taken the opposite direction, to say that your videos are performing *so well* in the broader scope of youtube that they're being recommended to and watched by a massive amount of new people.
Don't let youtube's intentionally demeaning analytics beat you down, you're going strong. Keep at it.

If you intend to play the zenith seed, you can actually AFK farm stars quite easily with an underground mob farm since they have a chance to spawn in slimes. This even applies to mother slimes and their babies.
A tip with this weapon. Make the conveyor thing or an item hoik across the world, do non combat prep stuff at night, before the night is over return to the collection point. You will passively obtain stars and ammo isn't a huge issue. I'd say ammo reservation effects are pretty much mandatory.
Would want to see something to make fallen star farming a bit more simple or practical. Something like a massive area of effect furniture piece that can magnetise specifically fallen stars, or having something like "star rain" that might happen in place of regular rain but drops fallen stars at an increased rate and even during the day.
That's kinda crazy though and removes the only thing that might make the star shooter not viable.
If stars were easier to obtain it would be way to broken
It's just a few-second destroyer killer to me, and for that purpose it doesn't consume that many stars.

Not sure if this is true but i noticed that if u have a small platform in the sky and u sleep there lots of stars fall on the platform with u
for me, star canon in itself is helpful againts pretty much any boss in pre-hardmode (classic difficulty)
mostly cause i use the aim button a lot

Use a skybridge item hoik for the stars, it'll transport them much faster to you so there's little to no chance of them despawning come daytime unlike conveyors.
By the time you finish Golem, you can fight Duke, then you get the Tsunami which is a good ranged weapon, the main catch of the Super Star Shooter is the infinite pierce making it good for invasions, but we can get that same thing with Tsunami+Jester's arrows and the Magic Quiver

I have a really good and super fun build idea for anyone. I used the Valhalla knights set, squires shield, the brain of confusion, worm scarf, the rest pure damage with celestial shell, Santa n-k mount, single stardust cell minion or minion of your choice, a bunch of lunar portal staffs, clinger staff, crimson rod, just spam things like a rainbow rod, frost hydra, they don't take sentry slots so you can have like 8, and spamming vampire knifes to heal you. I predict that you should get around 12k, single target DPS? Not sure, plus you are super tanky with super rapid healing and it is my new favorite build. Let me know what you think. Have you tried something like this? I personally love these kinds of builds with soo much variety.
Not sure how accurate this is, but i think lantern nights, aka the event that happens the night after a boss kill increases the amount of fallen stars that night

playing 1.4.4 and I absolutely love the reworked swords, Excalibur / True Excalibur especially are so good
Been using the Star Cannon on my Journey World, and yeah it’s pretty busted with infinite stars. I’m not in Hardmode yet so I’ll have to wait and see how insane the upgrade is.
Also I completely forgot about the Coin Gun, I definitely won’t make 9999 Platinum and shred everything with it 😂
an important additional note is that In get fixed Boi and don't dig up pots drop stars, so there's a limited supply but you'll get them alot near the beginning and as you naturally explore
The Star Shooters don't work on bosses in the GetFixedBoi seed.
With the max stacks plus mod if you go over 1000 of any ammunition it becomes unlimited you still have to grind for it but I think it’s pretty cool and rewarding once obtained.
I think they shoul make the stars craftable into fragments which then are used as ammo, you would get about 5-10 per craft to make the grind less aggravating, otherwise, good weapon good video! Love your content
I made this in a semi-recent play through, and had plenty of ammo because I never got rid of fallen stars when I got them in prehardmode. Because of this I ended up with about 700 stars I could use as ammo when I made the weapon.

If there were other star types that involves other cool effects, this weapon will truly shine.
As a casual player, I would use this weapon as a secondary, using other ranged weapons like the onyx blaster and saving the super star shooter for high dps boss fights. this strategy allows for, in the case of an invasion, a lot of ammo, as you are not using the weapon all the time. I think that this makes the super star canon viable.
it might actually work well in the everything/dont dig up seed! yknow, since fallen stars are abundant due to slimes and pots dropping them.
It definitely needs more improvement. The way I see it, if somebody's willing to go to the lengths required to farm fallen stars they ought to have the same devastating firepower available to them throughout hardmode that the star cannon provides them in pre-hardmode. I also think the coin gun should be retooled a bit to make it even more powerful with higher-level coins. Maybe a base copper coin damage of 4 and have it quintupled every additional coin tier (20 for silver, 100 for gold as normal, 500 for platinum because come on it's platinum). But that's just me; I am very much in love with the idea that patience and hard work should pay off majorly.
If you have decent mobility you can just do a run across your world right before the night ends.
In hardmode it's really easy to keep it fueled once you have access to conveyor belts, just gotta go pick up the collected stars before the night ends, no need to stand or run around all night.
There's a version of terraria that has an infinite duplication glitch using the separate button. I don't know what version but that allows my friend to dupe pull ammo slots of fallen stars and use the star cannon comfortably
In the Remix seed you can get Fallen stars pretty easily from slimes and breaking pots. It might find another niche there because it's honestly quite a bit easier to get lots of stars on that seed.

If you have the spare time, the spare blocks, and neither want to wait for the Steampunker nor buy all of those conveyor blocks, you can just make a hoik bridge. When the stars hit the 'ground,' they actually penetrate the blocks deeply enough that they get caught in the hoik, without ever having to actuate the blocks.
The 2 star shooting weapons are never worth the time it takes to farm the ammo! As in the time it would take you to get any meaningful amount of ammo for them, you would have massively progressed through the game by doing other things.
It comes down to simple math, as even if you got 100 stars per night you only need to compare that to time real world time it takes for each full day cycle in game (One minute of in-game time lasts one second of real-world time, meaning one hour in-game lasts one minute real-world. Therefore, one full Terraria day lasts 24 real-world minutes (15 during the day, 9 during the night).
That's 240 minutes (4 hours) to get 1000 stars at a rate of 100 per night which is higher then what you will actually see in game. If we only account for night time minutes it's 90 minutes every 240 minutes purely given to collecting stars for a meagre #>1000 stars (roughly 5 minutes of shooting at base use time for the Super Star Shooter).
my usual strat is to just leave terraria on overnight and use a minecart track + platform bridge. lets you afk without dealing with mobs (if you set the edges to bumpers) and you can do it prehardmode to get stars for the OG star cannon
I haven't played a single playthrough that wasn't journey mode since 1.4 was released. Some things I just can't be bothered to endlessly farm, like harvesting plants, fishing... Turning up spawnrates and changing the time are also fantastic. So ammo definetely wouldn't be a problem. However I never even noticed the weapon existed until my last playthrough, which was mostly the reworked swords, so I didn't use it.
Even before the buff it was a really cute boss destroyer...took out Fishron with it straight after getting it...well it took a few world reloads to get a traveling merchant to get it but still...was worth it.
In my last playthrough a year ago I was a ranger class and was only passively farming for these, maybe getting 20 or so per night, and was using the star cannon every now and then before moving onto other things, definitely worth it.
I've always wanted to use this weapon but I never thought of it as an option due to the price of stars, I might reconsider though because of the buff. Especially after the farm idea. Cool video nice work!
when i originally used this in 1.4 i made an entire world for farming stars. built a hoik array on a sky bridge and put a bed next to the pickup spot. sleep till night, sleep till almost dawn, turn on the hoiks and collect everything, then rinse and repeat
the inf pierce and 75% base dmg after effect makes it probaly the 2nd best croud control weapon
I don't know about other seeds, but in getfixedboi slimes carrying fallen stars spawn very frequently and with a basic mob farm I have gotten over 2k in just a few hours of afking
curiously stars are a lot moreo common on "don't dig up" or "get fixed boi" seeds, due to slimes dropping the stars occasionaly
just...don't try...catching the stars on the surface
I think the last things needed to improve the weapon usability would be giving it it's own type off ammo that would be crafted from fallen stars, maybe at a rate of 10 per star, and it would become a really solid weapon.
Yea but the whole idea is the trade offer for power over viability. Kinda like how the coin gun is broken but cost your whole life savings to fire for 12 seconds.
If star shooter ammo was easier to obtain it would be too broken.

If you're playing in the dont dig up/zenith seed then fallen stars are no problem- just set up a normal mob grinder and plenty of star slimes will give you all the ammo you need and more
I loved the star cannon and I learned about its upgrade and waited patiently for the wandering trader to sell it but he never did I’m so excited that you can actually craft its upgrade now

I wish there was a luminite upgrade for this making it so that any infrastructure you set up to collect stars is still relevant until the end of the game. The star cannon was always one of my favourite guns so I always love when anything like it is relevent. Maybe make the luminite version even have 75% chance to not consume ammo or something.

ah yes the star cannon was the weapon that sold me on this game i was hype when i saw the upgraded version in the journey's end update, and now it got a shiny new buff? hell yeah making one of my favorite weapons even more rewarding to use. a must have on any ranger playthrough!
In the calamity mod there is a biome that makes farming stars easy since every enemy drops star dust allowing my ranger enough stars to make use of this weapon and its subsequent upgrades.
Scarce ammo? Make a sky-bridge with rails already!
I helps mobility A LOT (specially for mediumcore players) and you can let your character on rails gathering stars everytime you go afk to make a pause.
either give more ways to obtain stars, or nerf the weapon slightly but give it a high chance not to consume ammo, like 50%, combined with ammo res and ammo box it will consume very little stars
I think you forgot a feature that when you sleep at night it increases star drop chance so if you sleep in between that conveyor belt build you made I think you could squeeze out some more stars.
The quality of life update might forgot to add "10% chance to not consume ammo" for starcannons and rocket launchers due to the expensive or grindy ammo making them as usable as the infamous automatic guns
In my opinion Relogic made this weapon too op and they aldo made it too easy to get fallen stars. It still looks sik tho!

I love the star cannon and the super star shooter but I didn't use it when it releases because you had to buy from the traveling merchant
The star canons are something I only use once. Usually not even until whatever boss I’m fighting is under half hp. After that I’ll be out of stars, and at least I can get a refund on hallowed bars by chucking it into shimmer
Useful up to and including fishron for ranged playthroughs. It does lose to terra blade in dps at that point though but ranged is at its lowest here imo. It still does more damage than the venus magnum with chloro bullets.
But then you get the tsunami and your dps gets multiplied by like 4 with venom arrows.
