- At around 8am on December 26th 2004, a 9.1 magnitude undersea earthquake struck 240km off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
In the hours that followed, a tsunami triggered by the earthquake surged across the Indian ocean, at speeds of 800km per hour.
It brought widespread devastation, wiping out entire communities in Southeast Asia and South Asia and impacting coastal areas as far away as East Africa.
In total, at least 225,000 people lost their lives.
SBS Asia Correspondent Aaron Fernandes travelled to one of the worst affected areas, Indonesia’s Banda Aceh, to meet with those who survived.
