- I have always welcomed change, Its not something I shy away from. Change is about growth, its about learning, its about becoming a new version of yourself. For me, fashion and interior design are one and the same. I can't just have one or the other, it has to be both. I seemed to have forgotten that when we moved to California. Finding inspiration again has given me clarity and I'm so excited to work on the house again :)

Art Deco-where’s the leopard?
Yes, I’m back to being a maximalist. At 77 years old if I don’t use my accessories now, I never will. I have lots of things that I love, but had put away. I’m getting more and more out and layering. I’m loving seeing all my things out. I’m not worried about being in style or out of style at this time in my life. I have very little visitors, mostly children and grandchildren. Decorating for me and loving it. I’m so glad that you mentioned maximalist. Glad to see you back too! 💜Jeanette Turner, Tennessee

I would go with a camel velvet with a slight pattern/texture for the sofa. You already have a dark chair, and you want it to look more collected. The camel will make it present better than anything to dark, and you’ll be glad of how elegant/casual it looks. It will look more custom that way too. ❤
You seem to be sharing more of your true self here, and I like the more relatable Arvin enormously. We married out of state (it wasn't legal nationally then) and had a costume party after we got home with everyone coming as their favorite romantic character. It was memorable and so much fun. Anything less than taking the time you need to do that would be a disservice to everyone. You’re like Adele. No black sofa!!! That vintage piece is perfection, but not in boring black. A beautiful subtle herringbone would be nice.
I know what you mean about black, I have had 3 black tailored leather sofas and I’m tired of it. Great ambiance at night mixed with antiques, but miss fabric and coziness. At night it looks gorgeous during the day more extreme.

Agree! I'd stress unnecessarily trying to keep the fur off as its so visible with a dark color. Perhaps roll tuffed pillows in a dark color would give the vibe he's going for. I have a fur baby and bought a leather sofa, so I could just wipe it off, because I lost the battle of trying to keep him off the sofa. His fav spot is the corner of the sofa on a big fluffy blanket, that I wash when needed and everyone is happy!

It’s just not worth it! Warm and comfortable means hanging out chilling not chasing the pets off and living with a green bissell cleaner 24/7 ( made that mistake lol)

Right away, I got EXCITED when I heard MCM and Art Deco. Together at LAST!!! I was obsessed with Art Deco for so long, but when I found out that Victorian/Edwardian/Craftsman-early American was ALSO fabulous and strangely cheaper and somehow more available, that was where it was at for me. But I've really warmed up to MCM and have rescued a few MCM pieces, like a chrome/Formica yellow broken ice-patterned dinette table, and a REALLY - like WOW - cool MCM coffee table that needs SERIOUS restoration. I also have a late '40s curio cabinet. Finally found my already-restored (phew) dream Art Deco console table WITH side table I use to...watch Arvin videos on. Lolz. Because that's where my TV is set (the mirror is the most). Rescued a beautiful Art Deco tallboy dresser (the wood smells INCREDIBLE on the inside). Been obsessed with Tiger Oak (rescued a c. 1910 mirror-mantle) and Birdseye Maple (RMS Queen Mary-inspired, of course)! I rescued an Edwardian Era humidor AND semi-rescued an Edwardian Era side table (the one item I actually bought for $20 at the Salvation Army). Dang. That's a lot more rescuing than I thought. Ending is NOT better than mending. Anyway! With all these eclectic pieces I am gradually restoring and polishing up, I am trying to fuse these three styles together with slightly more emphasis on the x>1930s items. And I am syked to see Arvin's MCM/Art Deco fusion because I NEED the inspiration so I can figure out how to fuse all these different styles in my own space.
I love the idea of warm mid century meets art deco. Mixing eras and styles takes true creativity and gives a new vibe that is unique to each individual. I’m having so much fun myself expressing my creativity through design in my own space.

Welcome back Arvin. You’ve had a big influence on the way I furnished my house so you were gone for too long and I really missed you. If you can’t post videos at least could you post shorts of Marble and Sage? I missed them too, now Sage looks so much bigger than when you were posting last year. My house is mid70’s, and is concrete and glass, so I am looking to add more wood pieces to add warmth. I love the warm mid century meets art deco style!
It makes sense that your inspo & creativity stems more from your fashion because you are an extrovert who needs to share and then experience the responses of others. You can’t take your home decor outside to show it off, and take part in others enjoyment the way you can an outfit. Sharing on social media is just not the same. Reading comments doesn’t make one feel the vibes like seeing people’s faces. I get you!
Sofa: I would explore a few more color options - what about a deep olive, or a very deep pumpkin orange/rust. Incorporate some 'water' elements into your home as well, to keep balanced. I truly enjoyed everything about this video - your fashion shots were captivating - like artwork themselves!

I love the turn to maximalism, but more of a curated maximalism, not "there's an empty spot, lets fill it with shit". I think it allows an expression of individualism-- embracing an unapologetically "me" style. Full of texture, art, and whatever colors make us happy. So glad you're back, it will be fun to see what the thoughtful changes in your personal journey bring to the table of design :)

13:12 - boy do I get it when you say the modern furniture doesn’t fit proportionally to your mid-century house!! I had a real problem with that when I was living in a very tiny 1930s row house in DC. I couldn’t get modern furniture through the front door much less in my tiny living room. The primary bedroom could fit no more than a double bed. I finally had to settle on buying antique 1920s-1940s furniture. Once I did that, everything worked perfectly. I just reupholstered chairs and a sofa and I loved it!
This house was a lot. Staying true exclusively to MCM is very hard. You have to be committed to it and it excludes other styles, so it's really rather limiting. Unless you're Frank Lloyd Wright, that's a bit tough. I'm glad you're expanding a bit, experimenting with incorporating another aspect. So great to have you back!

Yes!!! Love love the mid century/art deco mix!!! There’s an interior designer on UA-cam who said in one of her videos that you should never mix those two design styles and I couldn’t disagree more. I’ve been doing it subtlety in my home for the last couple years and I think it looks fantastic. Now that I know that’s the combo you’re going for, I want to do it even more!!

Mixed opinion. I like the warmth of the black velvet color, but think mohair would be more durable with pets. Happy to see you return! You've been missed! Someone on YT was saying luster is an element we should have, so I added just a touch to my home, and I have to say it worked. When you were in the antiques and art place, I fell in love with that splatter abstract with a touch of red. I totally think you should get it. On your new rug collection, I like that sort of orange one with the crosshatch pattern because of all the texture, the white one with the abstract black lines, the denim color, the alabaster one, and more! So glad we can go on your next journey with you. ❤

Black Mohair!!! I said to my friend when you held up the swatches, "One is velvet and one is mohair" before you said anything. I feel like I know what you like!
I think you are on the right track with mid-century/art deco. Contrasts are always a good thing. For example, shiny metals with rustic warm tones, modern lamp with antique table, etc., etc. Also, it's an easy way to evolve your space and enjoy the process of collecting over time. Mohair is the best fabric! So incredibly durable and wears in beautifully over time!

It's so good to see you 😊 Thank you for talking about rushing to furnish/update your home. I made so many mistakes in my first homes. I didn't know what my style was, & allowed current trends to choose my decor & furniture. It push me out of my comfort zone. Thank goodness I learned which designers help me find things I actually liked.
I'm ahead of the curve. Our bedrooms are carpeted. The colour is a rich iris blue, darker than true blue and lighter than navy blue.
Just a heads up - with any darker colour, any dander, fluff, crumb etc stands out and the vacuum has to come out every second day.
Disclosure - l live with a teen and 2 cats......maybe contributing factors to the upkeep LOL

Thank you for touching on the amount of time and care it takes to decorate a home that is new to you. We’ve been in our home for two years and it has been such a slow process because we refuse to bring things in that we do not absolutely love.
I think a lot of people will appreciate this approach as opposed to those influencers who scramble to fill a space as fast as possible. It’s just not realistic.

I think black is too dark for the sofa unless the walls are also dark and the house becomes an entire vibe, as with fashion it'll become a lot more about the silhouette and read heavy and blockier which is a lot of contrast from your light walls and will make it harder to appreciate its unique shape and details, between the two though warm black since its less severe and catches the light a little more

Hi Arvin!! I’m so happy to see you back. I’ve missed you sooo much! Love the vintage sofa in your office, it’s such a statement piece. I like the black mohair swatch to enhance that statement. I also like the idea of adding some art deco pieces in the house. I’ve been busy too. I volunteer as a docent at a Greek Revival three story home with a barn that has carriages in it that belonged to the family. The house was built in 1864. I just got named vice president of the docent organization, there are over 40 of us. It also gives me a seat on the board. I’m really looking forward to this new adventure. Welcome back!
