Here is a quick little demo of how to install a new battery into your Hyundai Kona key fob. This was from a 2019 but the 2018 model uses the same fob.
How to replace the battery for the fob for the Hyundai Kona Smart Keyless Entry Flip Key Fob 2018, 2019 Models.
Hyundai Remote Part Number: 95440-J9000, 95440J9000
Insert Key PN 81999-G3020, 81999G3020
FCC ID: TQ8-FOB-4F18
Fits 18 19 Hyundai Kona with push to start, proxy system
The KONA Electric will do 0-62mph in as little as 7.6 seconds - comparable to a hot hatch - and has a top speed 104mph, while producing zero emissions and being exempt from road tax.
As infrastructure improves and motorists become more environmentally conscious, demand for ‘green’ vehicles continues to rise.

They have changed the design of this fob since I made this video 2 years ago. Here is the updated version - ua-cam.com/video/748GyJl_MdI/v-deo.html
This guy gets straight to the point, didn't need to make a documentary 😂
Thank you
Clear
Perfect
Ha! Glad I could help
After removing emergency key, there is a slot specifically for a flathead screw driver. Insert and turn either way carefully. It will split open easily. NB: The emergency key has a little tab on the end of it that's almost the right shape to fit - if they'd thought it through even further, they could have made the end of the key a little screwdriver head, then the remote would come with its own opening tool.
The original version of this fob does not have the slot you're describing. They have since updated the fob and I've filmed it here: ua-cam.com/video/748GyJl_MdI/v-deo.html
@@KeyFobRob indeed you are correct mine was one of the originals and did not have the slot. i was able to get it open using your video above as a guide. thank you
Glad you could get it sorted out! Take care
I wasted 30 minutes before I saw your comment. Thank you sir!
below the physical key compartment there is a small slot, I used a flat screwdriver crv9/32 to fit snugly in there. I held the key with my left hand, turned the screwdriver clockwise with my right hand and i pried it open the first time, hope this helps
this is very important! do not do the same as the guy in the video as you will mess up your key. Find that compartment under the physical key.
Cool. Just with slight turn it opened up very easily from the slot
Thanks very much 😊 👍
This is a lifesaver. Yes I damaged my fob a little before going to the comments
Thank you so much!
CORRECT! SUPER EASY! DESIGNED FOR FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER; NOT HOW VIDEO DID.
These manufacturers keep changing everything
My key looks exactly similar to the one in video.
When opened, battery and circuit board are in opposite panels.
But was easy to change the battery.
Tricky part was to open the key fob.
Thanks man for making the video.
Glad I could help you with the hard part!
That was so helpful - thank you! I had no clue how to change it beforehand - instructions from Hyundai dealers had no visuals
Glad it helped!
Thank you!!! It is so simple when you know exactly what you need and what to do.
Glad it was helpful!
If getting a screwdriver into the seam is as difficult for you as it was for me, i found it helped to push a regular straight pin (a round headed quilting pin, in my case) into the seam first as a wedge, then guide the screwdriver in after it to nudge the seam open. The sharp point got in faster without marring the edges of the fob as much.
After removing the manual Key, the sharped edge works just fine to open the case. Thanks for the video.
Thank you. Out of 3 videos I watched you actually helped me figure out how to open the key fob. They are so frustrating to open.
This is brilliant and allowed me to change the battery myself and avoid the schlep to Hyundai. Thank you!
Welp my whole fob is ripped to shreds! Love how they make it so easy for us. Finally got it open with the screwdriver but it's a mangled fob now.
Many, many thanks! You just saved me a 50-mile round trip to a dealership :)
Yo!! That's awesome. Take care
Thanks for the vid! I’ve done lots of these, and this is the first FOB I’ve seen without an area to insert a tool to service the clamshell.
Hyundai did end up updating their fob so that's is easier to open and have a specific slot used to open it. However, the first iteration of this fob (the one in this video) isn't clear on how to open. Here is the updated version - ua-cam.com/video/748GyJl_MdI/v-deo.html
I don't know how much money you just saved me, but thank you!
Thanks! Followed your instruction and it worked like a charm. I used a pocket knife since the seam is very small and it popped open real easy using very little pressure!
Thank-you for keeping it concise!😊
Always!
For the record, a spudger (plastic prying tool), works much better than the pick (the pick just isn’t as firm, or made for prying something open) - they come in most small tool kits -and it won’t do any damage if you slip, like a screwdriver would!
Thank you! I had to start off with a very small flathead screwdriver, but then used the guitar pick like item.
Thank you for the help my friend, you're a life saver
Glad it was helpful!
worked great on my 2019 Hyundai Kona EV, thanks!
Great to hear!
Thanks, guy! Super annoying when that thing starts to die and you're stuck trying to crank your car. Lol
Welcome 👍
Köszönöm. :) (Vál, Fejér vármegye, Magyarország)
Nagyon szívesen!
Thanks I assumed this was the process but didn’t wanna break anything hehe
No problem. Take it easy
Got it open thanks! Luckely I already owned a repair kit for opening such things.
Very nice!!
You can just use you key lol
@@frnks3020 Good luck if it was never opened before. It's way easier with a tool.
@@Azzaroff you don't use the key the way you use the tool going all around the fob. The top of the fob has a spot where you can just twist with a screwdriver or a key and it will pop like popcorn
Thanks- I thought this is how it opened but unlike every other key fob I have seen, there is no pry spot. I ended up using my thumbnails as I have very strong ones and did both my fob and my wife's. Great and well thought out video!
The original fobs don't have a good pry spot like most fobs. The newer version of this exact fob do. Here is the updated version - ua-cam.com/video/748GyJl_MdI/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for this tutorial.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! I couldn't figure this out. Thanks so much.
Happy to help!
Thank you
Great! Glad the video was helpful
Thank you! Your a lifesaver!
Glad it helped!
Thanks again. Hyundai Kona 2017
Very helpful video. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Appreciate you for this.
Beat video for replacing battery
Glad I the video could help you out! Take care!
Done and done. Thank you!
I been trying to open this damn thing for 10 mins without scratching it :D
Yeah - they don't make it easy on you
I fought with it for about 2 days.
My way to finally get it was putting in a small flat head screwdriver where the physical key was and then putting the screwdriver between my knees and twisting the key fob just a bit so that it spread that seem enough for me to slip in a thin picture hanger hook which worked really well to go all around the seem once I could spread it enough. Or something else thin and metal that isn't a knife to avoid accidents
Hopefully that saves someone a lot of the swearing and headaches I went through. What a lousy design.
Mine won't split in half correctly. The back panel comes off but leaves an interior black panel covering the battery and circuitry. I've not been able to figure how to prise this one off (without risking breaking something) so unable to change the battery. Why not just have a screw and a square compartment cover on the key. Idiot designers...
@@CNGTunes after removing the back panel,
The circuit board with protection comes out easily.
My key had the battery in one panel and circuit board in another.
Thought this was how to open it, but since it was so tight I was worried I was going to snap or break something. Thanks for the video. Confirmed what I thought and reassured me that I simply need to use a little bit more force to pry it open :)
You have to be gentle and firm all at the same time
perfect, thank you
You're welcome!
You don't need any Extra tools to open the remote Key, just use the mechanical key to bend it open.
Thanks! Exact fob and car too!
Great!
Thanks!
Thank you very much!!!
Many thanks!
You're welcome!
Thanks a lot for your advices !
My pleasure!
Excellent. You did it fast and made it easy to understand.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the help !
Great! Glad the video was helpful
Muchas gracias. Hecho !!!🎉🎉🎉
De nada!
Thanks for that information!!!
Any time!
And they say $15 for this little work.
some places want a lot more!!
what about reprogramming the fob after you replace the battery? My fob doesn't work anymore
Ciao, puoi dirmi dove hai acquistato il supporto per aprire il telecomando della chiave.? Grazie mille
When you remove the old battery and put a new one it is not written the same, it is written CR 2032 Panasonic, but the new one at the beginning of the video was written "CR 2032 ENERGIZER"
🤔
Thank you that help
Happy to help
Great video! Exactly what I needed. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
I used a ring pliers i got from harborfreight. The ones that opens up when you squeeze the grips. I aimed for the spot where the key was in (small indentation).
This way i didnt damage the key fob's sides.
Nice!
Far out I've had my hyundai i30 for 4 years now and never knew that was a emergency key
Glad I could help 👍
So I have a 2022 Hyundai Kona (Sel model with push button start). Does the key fob need to be reprogramed after changing out the battery? If so . . . can you do it yourself and how?
It will not need to be reprogrammed after you change the battery.
@@KeyFobRob Thanks much for the quick reply !
No problem take care 😌
Thanks 🙏🏽
You’re welcome 😊
How to know when to replace battery? Will the red light keep flashing when the battery life ends? Please update
The dash will tell you. Also, if you fob isn't working as well as it once was, time for a new battery. They usually last between 2-5 years.
You’re supposed to remove the key & then use it to pop open the fob. It’s super easy & no tools needed
Is that same battery required for the 2019 Santa Fe?
Yup! Battery you need - amzn.to/2YOl8R9
Thank You!!!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
How much the remote battery of Hyundai Sir.?
Well ✔ done, thanks!
Glad I could help!
Just use the tip of the actual key, it’s made to pop the unit open.
Thanks.
You're welcome
Tricky to get open but simple. Thanks!!
You're very welcome!
.
Omg, this is almost impossible to open. It should not be this hard!
Thanks help a lot
No problem 👍
use flat & thin tweezers :)
I've never even heard of that car before lol
Yeah. New little hatch
Actually just pull the key out, stick a needle nose pliers in that end along the edge and open the pliers.
Thank youuuuu
You're welcome
Ahhhh, appreciated
You're welcome!
Just what I was looking for, thanks!
Glad I could help!
I tried using small screwdrivers and still could not open it and just dent the side, I am going to the locksmith to replace the battery
Use a knife
Truly helpful! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Idéalement un « opening tool » pour smartphone et ouvrir sur la partie cachée de la clé (la où se remet la clé de secours) pour ne pas faire de marque
Sweet 👌 thanks for this man 😀👍
No problem 👍
Гуд👍👍👍
Thanks a lot , was helpful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You're welcome!
my fob was like so fucking stuck together for whatever fucking reason, the pry spot barely worked, the thin part of the slot fucking broke too
I purchased battery 2025 by mistake
A 2025 will work in a pinch.
Split my plastic being too forceful. Bloody typical
Didn't worked :(
rob i broke it in 2 seconds
Sorry, but this is NOT the way to replace the battery. You can do it this way but it's difficult and you'll probably damage the case (as I did on the first key fob following your video). To replace the battery, remove the metal key from the end and then use the key or a reasonably wide straight bladed screw driver (more leverage), insert it into the top slot inside where you removed the key blade and twist. Easy and no damage!

people are wondering why you took the hard method of doing this? when you could do this: ua-cam.com/video/MWybaUjdlRg/v-deo.htmlsi=UJ4kxKKjbb0nxPKh&t=44
