Maybe the reason why nearly all the box arts were revamped for the western releases is because the companies had agreements with local branches to systematically pay local painters and artists to redesign all the artworks 😭. Why oh whyyyy
Agreed and sometimes the games are better too as they may have something in the Japanese version that is left out of the US Version. I personally like collecting the Japanese Mega Drive games as well. For somereason the Japanese Mega Drive games just feel more official to me. I dont by RPG's in Japanese though lol no need since I cant play them.
I just came back from a week in Tokyo. I watched your videos to get a feel for what I was in for and have to say they helped immensely. I stayed at the "Godzilla Hotel" in Shinjuku, and spent plenty of time in Akihabara, Shibuya, Harajuku, etc. I had an amazing time and found tons of great deals on stuff I never thought I'd see. Of all the stores I frequented, the one I went to most (5 times!) was Surugaya which was close to my hotel in Shinjuku. Amazing place, and I never would have found it without your help. Just wanted to say THANKS! You rock, Jim! ❤️
@@Rickai85 Shop as early as you can. Most places open at 11am and can get really crowded as the day goes on. Watch more of Jim's videos to get a feel for where things are. Don't be afraid to take trains. Their train systems are fast and cheap. I ended up finding amazing items right where I was staying in Shinjuku at Surugaya. Be extra polite to everybody!

Yeah, luckily I bought a lot of them almost 10 years ago when they weren't quite so expensive yet. Vampire Killer for example was about $80 when I bought it and I think I've seen it for as much as $500 now.
Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole isn't just my favorite Genesis game. It's my favorite game of all time. If you can get used to the controls it's such a great game.

Growing up in South Africa, nintendo didn't officially launch here for quite some time. So all we had for a long time we're Chinese bootlegs we called "Golden China" machines lol. Then Sega legit brought over the Mega Drive.Our house was robbed and I used the insurance money from my Bootleg machine being stolen to buy a Mega Drive. Aaaah, memories. lol. Love the Mega Drive, such a good console :)
Yeah, the full-cover artworks are quite amazing. I have about 30 JP MD games, and I was surprised that in some of the (hand-drawn) covers, they mention the artist. "Illustration by xxxxx" That's awesome. It's usually on games from the first two years, were art sometimes even extends to the back cover. Most gorgeous hand-drawn covers: Altered Beast, Super Shinobi II, Shadow Dancer, Ghouls & Ghosts, Phantasy Star End of the Millenium, Bahamut Senki... I also love the original design template of the European Mega Drive covers (until the 1993 redesign). The metallic logo, the black and grey grill. So late-eighties, but so timeless :)
My gaming history is similar to urs, I grew up with all the N systems until the DC. Mega Drive Japanese games is the only serious collecting I do, for other consoles I use flashcarts or CDRs. One very expensive game I would love to have, outside of BusterHawk, is Steel Empire. The J cover of that game is amazing.
Cool video, first console I ever owned as a kid. Sold it when I got a bit older as I thought I had “grown out of video games” regretted it ever since so I bought a Japanese model and started collecting the games I had. Japanese box art is so much better. Then UA-cam came along and I’ve seen so many games that I never knew about MUSHA was my first dip in to the slightly more expensive retro market. Never looked back. Would love a copy of panorama cotton, the battle manias and contra but they are pretty pricey now.

Actually, it's a different YYH game published by Sega called Yu Yu Hakusho Gaiden. It's pretty cool. I'd still love to have a copy of the Treasure game in my collection.

It was a unique game for its time and so fondly burned into my memories from childhood. The Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) is another fantastic game too :D

Yeah, I've seen the reproduction, looks good but I'm a collecting addict I guess. I'll just wait for the day that I'm super rich and then I'll go buy a copy. The Shinobi games will always be classic.

That's probably a game that's still cheap? Super Fantasy Zone is also one that I'd recommend.
Great collection. I think the ones you want to add are probably the same as what I want too. Gley Lancer, Twinkle Tale, Slap Fight, Panorama Cotton. If I had to suggest a game to check out, that's not too pricey, it would be DJ Boy. Mega Panel is another one. Thanks for sharing.

Debatable if You own Columns 1 and happy with it Wani Wani World aka Berlin Wall - Pretty fun and underrated 2 player Bubble Bobble style Arcade game Captn Lang aka Havoc - Great simple and difficult Platformer by Data East Saint Sword - Still gotta play this. have you been to that retro merch store in akihabara? its in the main street right close to an old camera shop probably not far from Trader. They have like Sega memorabilia based tshirts boxed in a mega drive type box, dreamcast merch, nintendo merch, etc. I haven't been to akihabara much since this covid thing since march so i dont know if it is still there.

I agree with you. US box art was a catastrophe and late US-programmed game had a very bad sound compared to early Japanese-programmed game. (This is of course a generalization)

That Shin Chan game is almost exactly like the Super Famicom version, and for a far higher price tag. And as typical 99% of the time, the Japanese games on all consoles back then had better boxart.
9:35, sell an arm, a leg, and a first born to afford all 3 boxed, or at all. Sometimes Taruruto-kun can be gotten for cheaper, but to me $50 is still not cheap. Forget getting Sailor Moon and Devil Hunter Yohko for under $100, not happening. Will try to get Jewel Master, and maybe Shadow Blasters this round for my Genesis, and Bonkers for my SNES, maybe another SFC game when my taxes are done and arrive.

Glaylancer IS getting an official reprint, grab it that way. My Genesis collection is weird. I have repros of Glaylancer, Battlemania 2 and Veritex. A bunch of loose carts and an Everdrive that never leaves my system. I only really need Virtua Racing to have everything. It's the odd case where the Genesis if you don't mind loose carts is cheaper to collect for than the Mega Drive. There's no convient way to play Mega Drive on Genesis either. I just collect for way too many systems to be bothered with Megasis collecting. But it is the System going into my Framemiester via JP21 RGB.

If you like the alien franchise then Alien 3 is a pretty good game, not sure if it was released in Japan though. A cartridge converter works for me.

Yes, Bare Knuckle 3 is pretty expensive here, about $150.

For all the exclusive MD games they should have made a Megadrive mini for the U.S. instead of the Genesis mini coming out.
One game that comes to mind that you may not have was World of Illusion, great Genesis game. Your collection is incredible though.
How do you play these on a Japanese mega drive system? I have some Japan mega drive games I heard they’ll work on an American Genesis with a game genie?

Ha ha, I wish I was loaded but actually I bought most of these games almost 10 years ago when they weren't quite so expensive yet. Now, I'm a pretty cheap guy when it comes to buying games, I'm always looking for a deal or a discount.

That Shin Chan game is almost exactly like the Super Famicom version, and for a far higher price tag. And as typical 99% of the time, the Japanese games on all consoles back then had better boxart.
9:35, sell an arm, a leg, and a first born to afford all 3 boxed, or at all. Sometimes Taruruto-kun can be gotten for cheaper, but to me $50 is still not cheap. Forget getting Sailor Moon and Devil Hunter Yohko for under $100, not happening. Will try to get Jewel Master, and maybe Shadow Blasters this round for my Genesis, and Bonkers for my SNES, maybe another SFC game when my taxes are done and arrive.

My Genesis collection is weird. I have repros of Glaylancer, Battlemania 2 and Veritex. A bunch of loose carts and an Everdrive that never leaves my system. I only really need Virtua Racing to have everything.
It's the odd case where the Genesis if you don't mind loose carts is cheaper to collect for than the Mega Drive. There's no convient way to play Mega Drive on Genesis either.
I just collect for way too many systems to be bothered with Megasis collecting.
But it is the System going into my Framemiester via JP21 RGB.
