Retro Review - Red Faction PC Game Review

- Опубліковано 28 лис 2013
- Red Faction is a first-person shooter video game developed by Volition, Inc. and published by THQ. It was released for PlayStation 2, Windows and Mac OS in 2001. A version for the Nokia N-Gage was developed by Monkeystone Games. The game was inspired by several works of contemporary Science Fiction, most notably the movie Total Recall among others.
Red Faction takes place on Mars in the late 21st century. The player controls a miner named Parker who helps lead a rebellion against the Ultor Corporation. The premiere feature of the game is its "Geo-Mod" technology, short for "geometry modification", which provided destructible environments, allowing the player to destroy certain sections of the scenery in the game. For example, instead of opening a door, a player could blast through the rock surrounding the door. - Ігри

I was given £250 or so on my birthday and went and bought a PS2 with Red Faction and Time Splitters with 2 DVD's - Deep Blue Sea and Pitch Black. I was SO fucking excited. And MGS2. God the graphics was groundbreaking.
Sounds like an awesome birthday!
The early 2000s was so good for games.
AnimeWolfgamer anime sucks y’know kid?
Remember timesplitters
The golden age of gaming innovation.
It was possibly the best there’ll ever be, hopefully not
Max Payne... Kingdom Hearts 1...
Way underrated game imho.
I spent a lot of wasted time on blowing up random walls & floors and I was maybe 1/3 or 1/2 mile in and walked out of it realizing holy crap this game is fun. Shooting glass and walking over it you hear it crunch. All bullet holes, broken stuff stays there even days later and loading old SAVES this game was amazing for it's time.
@@DimitriosChannel its an amazing game that I loved back in the day and I still play it everynow and then
All of the rf games were what a shame
4:26 The second "stealth" section doesn't need to be stealthed. When prompted to put on the doctor's disguise, simply don't enter the closet you're supposed to; proceed with the level instead. You'll enter combat almost immediately, but you'll keep all your weapons and inventory, making the cave section a lot easier.
I made a grave mistake on my recent play through. Fuck the damn lab coat
God you are a LIFESAVER. I'm going through a playthrough rn. Thanks for the tip!
Tbh this game has more destructable objects and surfaces that modern fps games. which is quite a shame. Really though this was gonna be the future for FPS games, where you could destroy more and more stuff.
8 years later and things still haven't improved :/
@@zubiecup It's tragic :( developers seem to think that immersion is only about graphics. For me immersive improves a lot more if the world reacts to what im doing. Just imagine what GTA 6 could be like, if we could destroy parts of the world..
@@RMJ1984 that would be amazing. I don't think we'll see a destructible world in VI, but we can dream.
Playing this game on splitscreen with bots on PS2 was a blast. And yeah, the soundtrack is freaking awesome.
As other people have said, disagree with all the RF sequels being labelled as crappy. RF2 was lacklustre true but RF Guerrilla was ridiculously fun. It had issues, I cannot remember a lot of variety. It was a great game to pick up and play. Armageddon was and should be forgettable.
RF2 was better than Armageddon.
In my opinion, Guerilla is easily the best in the series.
I agree.
Legather it would be amazing to see a next gen red faction game with the gameplay of RF1 with the explosives and sledgehammer from guerrilla with the satisfying destruction of both RF1 and guerrilla
Guerrilla was the first PS3 game that I owned, having just upgraded from the PS2 the destruction blew me away no pun intended.
Remember this on the Ps2 was quite a treat especially the 4 player split screen, or 2 ppl vs bots
"out of all the crappy sequels"
Dude, Red Faction Guerrilla was fucking awesome. It is arguably the best in the series. Red Faction 2 wasn't that bad either, in fact its quite underrated. Good review none the less.
RF2 wasnt bad??? Are you one of those console-girls??? Looked and played worse than 1! Just because they have to tune it down for the stupid NEXT GEN consoles. Im out of quotation marks -.-
LaserGadgets console girls ?
If you play a shooter with a controller, you also toast your steaks and piss into the sink. DOES work ok, but its not MADE for that. Yes?
LaserGadgets yeah u have a point, but....console girls ??😂
Most gamer girls have consoles :p I WANNA BE A GAMER, I GO BUY A PS4. Commercials say FOR THE PLAYERS so why not! Pfff. PC master race!
Crappy sequels? Pfft yeah right. Yeah, Red Faction II isn't nearly as cool as its predecessor but I gave Volition credit for not resting on their laurels. RFII also solved all of the pacing problems that plagued the original, it was full on action throughout. After RFII, the series went on hiatus and came back in a big way with Guerrilla, which was a great open-world game set on Mars. How cool is that? The main problem with that one was the repetitive side activities but the core game was really fun and the destruction model was fantastic. Armageddon was a disappointment for sure though. Instead of making a bigger and better version of Guerrilla, Volition wanted to make a game that was more akin to the original but with Guerrilla's awesome tech. As a result was a game that had a serious identity crisis. It felt like you were often punished for blowing stuff up, the entire game didn't have much hard behind it. With the Red Faction IP now with Nordic Games, it will be interesting to see what they will do with it. Red Faction has always been a very unique shooter franchise with each sequel being completely different to the game preceeding it and I respect it for that.
*****
They're only a publisher.
Multiplayer on this was awesome. Just constantly blowing massive tunnels through the maps with a friend
"Ultor? The clothing company?"
this needs a remaster so badly
almost everyone forgot the game because of the sequels
The terrain destruction was mostly for the multi player, which was awesome btw
I had so much fun blowing stuff up and building caves back in the day!
I can honestly say this is one of my favourite games
This was one of my most favourite childhood games, I love it so much. I will completely admit going back to it, it has glaring issues that you touched on but still one of my favourites. Probably cause I played it when I was a wee lad untouched by really awful games.
When i was young i enjoyed "digging" and finding secret areas etc, i could not comprehense the "awesome" destruction physics
this game is my childhood :)
Great job with the channel, man! I'm reliving some good memories watching your videos.
Great job mate! i love the work you're doing with this retro reviews, greetings from Chile!
What's up people hating on red faction guerrilla? What exactly makes this first one so much better than guerrilla? He mentions not as much freedom but you get lots of that in guerrilla thanks to the open world environment. Sure there could be some other things improved on, but I'll say that guerrilla is a pretty great open world shooter game.
I agree. Red Faction series as a whole sucked except for Guerrilla.
I remember playing this split screen and just blowing tunnels through one of the maps.
one of my favourite FPS games on the PS2. Loved the multiplayer in split screen. This is still the best in the series. Much better than Red Faction 2 IMO, or the third person sequels
One of my favorite fps's on the ps2. And the stealth sections are really not that bad if you know where to go and what to do to get through them (being able to save your progress whenever you want helps too), and the 2nd stealth section you mentioned is actually optional so you don't have to use stealth at all in that section of the game if you don't pick up the lab coat.
Absolutely loved Red Faction back in the day. I could play it again now, too. Not too shabby running it with the Pure Faction launcher, either!
I just replayed this game a few months ago. It is one of my all time favorites.
This game kinda reminds me of half life 1
Poor man's.
This video was my first introduction to your channel.
I remember playing multiplayer all the time, using the rocket launcher to make little caves in the walls to hide in lol
Oh my god... thus game is my childhood...the feels bro
Gggmanlives i know you probably wont see this but the first stealth section is the only one required and yes it is a complete bitch. however you can completely bypass the second stealth mission simply by not picking up the Dr outfit. i always do this and that level is sooooo much better for it. i also wanted to add that its awesome because you dont lose anything and you end up starting the next sections better equiped. honestly it makes the rest of the game after that for at least a little while a lot less difficult
caboose309 Hmm I had no idea about the second one. I just always ended up getting through it with a silenced pistol.
Gggmanlives
yeah you can just skip getting the lab coat and that level and the next levels after it are sooooooo much nicer and the problems with pacing after that aren't really there as you still have all your kit and can just roll on through. i personally love this game and always thought it was underrated. also the Geomod engine was a lot better in the multiplayer because many of the levels were built with it in mind. there were a lot of hidden weapons and powerups you could only get by blowing up walls and a lot of the time you could just bypass a wall to get to an objective quicker or blow up a bridge to keep the enemy team from getting to your objectives easier.
caboose309 Good catch on bypassing the second stealth section. I may be in the minority as I actually enjoyed the change in tempo/gameplay in that section, but damn it would've been a lot easier to just mow down those guards with the machine guns I already had.
hunter371
yeah, personally i did not like the change in pace, i felt it was jarring and broke it up too much. honestly the only way i found it was i wasnt listening to the objectives and just ran through. the odd thing was i dont know if this was a feature as the cutscene still shows you in the scientist gear
David Thorson
Do you watch all my videos looking for things to correct me on?
Great video as usual. I hated that one part in the game where you had to disarm the bomb. It was absurd because the code was random every time. Lol 😆
If anyone is hoping to buy this game still. PLEASE download TrueFaction, it allows you to limit your FPS to 30 or 60. There are many sections in this game that are impossible to progress because the physics in the game were not designed to run at framerates higher than 60. One example is the first submersible section, you have to lower a crane to get the sub in the water, but if you do not have a frame cap it will explode when dropped.
Really? I have TF installed but capped my fps at 144hz and went through the campaign just fine.
This game is amazing to this day. I remember the good days of multiplayer, man I hate those flying hackers.
Gosh so much memories !
Do you remember those de_rats maps?
there was a pretty big mapping and modding community. In the begining you had to dowload new maps and mods on levels4you.com
I remember this game as a huge leap in environmental physics!
Hey, I love your vids and I am interested in making a few or dabbling a bit into my collection of pc gaming.
But iam not sure what to record with.
Please could you tell me what you record and edit with I would really appreciate it
Thanks!
oh man i wonder if the homie did a review on red faction let me check....(did one 4 years ago) that is why i love this channel. im new here but this page is so amazing
I absolutely loved this game in my childhood. The destructible environments blew me away.
Old video, new comment. I'm running a lan party this weekend with Red Faction. Gonna be sick
this game was what got me started on fps games and I still play it to this day
I had this for the PS2 when I first had the PS2 console, I then had it for the PS3 as a download game and now I have it for the PS4 as a downloadable game which has unlockable trophies. Really good stuff. As for the stealth sections you mentioned it's only the first time you need to wear the suit and remain undetected but the second time you can avoid the scientist uniform and kill everyone as your hearts contempt leaving you with more ammo and weapons for the later sections.
Storm-Red Faction ost is fucking awesome, I remember playing this game on my PS2 back in 2002, what a great time
the song in the ost called "Redrum" is one of my favorites in any game I've played. but I've played and finished the game on both PC and ps2 and don't remember hearing it. does anyone know where it plays? I did hear a remixed version play in rf2 but that one is disappointingly boring.
I remember I played this at our school youth Lan / coffee. While I waited to play tibia, there was a computer with Red Faction. I remember that I only played the first bit over and over again, because it was so extremely fun to blow up things, especially when you had immortality code and a code for flying and weapons.
Umm... no, they couldn't quit their jobs. Where else is there to go on Mars?
If Ultor controls the way back to Earth, then they literally have the power to say "no, you don't quit". If there's any part of the story that's justified it's that part.
Not hard? What about the railgun mooks near the end? I remember them literally killing me at full health with one hit, even on easy.
It was a joke.
Eehhh... you went on so quickly to talk about the story's weaknesses I couldn't be sure. :P
2020. I'm still playing this incredible game. I love it.
On the console version, this game still had the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark/TimeSplitters 1 & 2 style aiming (static screen, moving reticle) which I hated (I loved the games, but hated that aiming style). Does the PC version have this? I didn't see you use the aim button (if the PC version has one) in this video.
It does not. The aiming is done with the mouse like it should be :)
I loved this game for many reasons but one of my favorite things was the characters reminded me of doom guy's in red suits and a more realistic premise, environment destruction & ppl compared to demons. I was too young to pick up bad dialogue. I loved that red miner suit tho lol
A good ole solid review
My favorite thing to do in this game was to set up a multiplayer match with my brother blow our way on top of the map using rockets then sporadically firing rockets into the sky..... then lone and behold they start coming down one by one. The last one standing won. It was dumb fun, but it was memorable and unique I can’t remember another game that let you do this.
Best part in the series!
Author not mentioned two interesting and unique aspects of gameplay: character can crawl over wire fences or climb on some obstacles and it is the only game i aware of where enemy can kill hero cutting him to death with shards of glass. One of levels involved riding elevator with glass walls and roof. Enemy literally using "shoot the glass" aproach from "Die hard" to kill hero.
This game was bad ass, those mercs were last faces I would see before death on stride towards the end.
I never actually realized that the second stealth section was a stealth section until a few playthroughs, because I completely missed the lab coat that you're meant to pick up.
The multiplayer mode online on PC is the best I've ever played in my life. And I played thousands of games.
In the arenas on the multiplayer, everything was destructible. I let you imagine what could happened in Capture The Flag maps and in the map created by the community with hidden secrets.
Good game. Played this and RFGuerilla. Definitely competition for well known games in the day.
That "stealth" section was ridiculously easy to get by without alerting anyone, idk what he was talking about
Red Faction 1 was the most satisfying shoot em up
I've been playing this game through a lot lately. Probably played it through at least a dozen times within the last 2 months lol I play it through Dash Faction and it's awesome. I think my favorite aspect is the story line. Everywhere you go is specific about _why_ you're going there, it's not just mindless shooting through a level. And of course I loved the soundtrack because it was different.
The submarine's controls feel so good because this game was originally developed to be Descent 3. Later, when Volition lost the IP they scrapped it and redeveloped it as "normal" FPS game. That is why there is such a disconnect between parts of the single-player. The huge caverns for designed to be navigated in with a spaceship...when that fell apart they had to include more orthodox level design..
2001 wasn't only a good year for FPS, it was arguably the best year for games ever since. Outside the FPS genre we had Devil May Cry, ICO, Soul Reaver 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Max Payne, Silent Hill 2, Shenmue II, Gothic and more, it's unreal how amazing that year was.
A friend and I use to play the multiplayer map that had a fort on both sides of this small canyon. We would both pick up Fusion rocket launchers stand on the roof and aim towards the sky and fire. The rockets from that gun would eventually rain down on the other side of the map. So we spent the match trying to kill each other with indirect fire.
Good review. ^_^ I really enjoy your reviews, they are detailed and fun and a lot of them are also quite nostalgic. I will admit though I never really liked Red Faction 1 or 2. Eh, I dunno, I just found them kinda mediocre, though I will admit RF1 is MUCH better than RF2. I did have some fun with RF1's multiplayer though, it was probably the only thing that stuck with me. My wife (Then just my GF) & I and some friends did have some great lan party fun. I did end up rather loving Red Faction: Guerilla though. Armageddon? Ehh not so much, though it had its moments.
Indeed quite an underrated game. Had a lot of fun with it back in the day.
I got this game and 32 other games in a THQ bundle like back in 2012 on Steam for $24.99. It came with 3 Red Faction games Saints Row 2, Darksiders 1 and 2 a bunch of War Hammer 40,000 games, Company of Hero games, Titan Quest, Metro 2033 and and more . Doing the math it would of been like less than 80 cents a game but that was back in 2012 so it was a great bundle. Glad I got it even though I don't play Warhammer 40,000 games or Company of Heros or Nexuiz. I haven't seen a good bundle like that since.
This one was my first fps I ever played. Fucking loved it. Still do. You really should do a redux review.
The Magnetic Rail driver was one of the best weapons along with The Fusion Rocket launcher.
one of my favorite FPS of all time for the PS2!!! love this game!!! i still play it for the PS2 pc emulator...:)
But why don't you play the PC version instead?
I dont play the pc version because it doesn't have the bots multiplayer like the ps2 does.
shadowlaw809 I have Red Faction 2 for PC, and it have the bot multiplayer.
+jimmyacego007 oh for real!!??? where can I get it bro??
shadowlaw809 It´s available on Steam.
It's infuriating at the way this awesome destructive environment engine has been rarely mimicked or incorporated into games that would be made SO MUCH DEEPER and enjoyable, other than SOME of the sequels.
I'll never forget watching my best friend play this a few weeks before I got it. He only had one save file and saved right before the final boos with 2 points of health. It did not go well for him.
I am curious why Gman dislikes Guerilla though. He's reviewed TPS games before and clearly does not automatically hate them so why does he not like Guerilla to the point that he stopped reviewing the series after 2?
My first clan was on RF. Also made loads of maps
Aw man, you didn't talk about one of the best features. Nearly all the weapons had alternate fire modes. I'd totally go to town with the SMG on the secondary. It just sounded wicked. But the real joy was the HMG. That gun was DAMN fun, especially in multiplayer.
'We made a game where you can destroy everything, including the environment itself, now spend half of the game in unbreakable corridors'
The real deal was in multiplayer Deathmatch or capture the flag at 16 vs 16
Everything was destructible in the environment. You were able to make new hidden corridors through the walls or to obtain secret items.
One of the best multiplayer I've played in my whole life.
RF2 has the best co-op split screen gaming on the original XBOX.
no, halo does.
devildad1620 in the ps2*
Будет ли обзор на Red Faction 2?
The developers have since addressed why Geomod wasn't implemented that often throughout the campaign. It was specifically due to how Red Faction initially released on the PS2 and was ported to PC later. It was actually a PS2 launch title. The PS2 hardware limited the scope of the game a great deal and while Geomod was still there the player couldn't make too many holes without the PS2's framerate drastically lowering to the point of crashing. So they had to redesign the levels so it was incorporated much less.
1:03 Cracked so hard laughing at that shit 🤣
... that's why i love old school childhood games
i was 10 years old when i played this game was epic :D
it was iconic, still is and i play it on my backwarts combatible ps3 >)
Surprised you didn't mention the best aspect of this game. It's multiplayer! :D
Is Steam a better place to pick up old/classic games than a pre-owned copy? I bought this for 50p secondhand as a nostalgic birthday present to myself (after having played my friend's version ages ago) so I have an actual physical copy, like a caveman, damn kids! Is that better or worse than Steam?
If you have no internet getting pre owned games are a good bet, GOG is better then Steam but has less games. I think Steam sucks imo.
One of the best open world games ever. Came out back when I was like 14. Used to get so stoned with friends and take turns on the game. Good times. Same year where you could get salvia at the smoke shop
For 2001, it is amazing they could do this... and yes it is an obvious copy of Total Recall. A modern remake with improved graphics 4K textures, and tweak the "boring part" to be a bit smaller or easier to cut through - and it could be a big seller again... built for nvidia GTX 1080 and PS4.
Also has unserviceable issues with the depth buffer for both.
I love Red Faction. I'm most familiar with it on the PS2 but I have played it on the PC recently and it doesn't cease to amaze. A couple of of differences between platforms is the ammo gauge on the assault rifle is red on the PC, while on console it's yellow. The main menu between the platforms is entirely different which present a neat comparison there, and the multiplayer has more character skins on PC and Online Play, where the multiplayer on console has been as dead as a ghost town for nearly 2 decades. yeah, this is when console gaming wasn't an online shit show. Nevertheless this game is so nostalgic, at least for me, and it's arguably one of the most influential games of my childhood. These days, my PS2 copy has gone to shit because of a scratched disc. The game will play perfectly normal until I reach that part where you must take a train to escape the mercenaries, the load screen you get while in the train will just make the game crash. Thank god the PS Store has Red Faction on the PS4. I picked it up for about $5, and for $5 it's well worth it. Hell it would still be worth it if it was $20.
I loved this game.
I just finished this and had an absolute blast, except for the stealth sections. I also wish there was more vehicular combat, in space or something.
I played this game. It is very hard, but fun to play. I even remember that i found a few secret areas in the game, simply by going through the walls in the random direction.
So I am assuming that this is where Saints Row got the Ultor company?
3rd Street AVolitionite up until Saints Row 4
This game was online so pro :). Remember when you put a c4 under someone's foot, you keep jumping :). Also modded alot in there.
I yesterday saw the movie and damn that feeling :). good times.
I remember trying to finish the game, but getting so frustrated at the one-shot kill Rail Driver enemies that I just couldn't bring myself to. The respawning enemies made it a complete chore as well.
Second stealth section is optional, and innitiates only if you pick up disguise. I did it only once to see how it goes. Every next playthrough I just shoot my way in.
How many disc do you need to install
2 disks I believe.
i agree armageddon sucked
but guerrilla was cleary the best in the series
Why?
Armageddon wasn't that good, but it was one of the few games I has as a preteen, so I have fond memories
Because Guerrilla was a sandbox of destructible buildings that made the games incredibly fun. Armageddon ruined that by making the game linear
Guerilla sucked.
Everyone's talking about how good Guerilla or Armageddon was. Here's the thing. This channel is primarily FPS games. Especially when he first started. So it's not in the realm of this. Maybe it's awesome but it's not an FPS, when talking about mainly FPS games especially the golden era of FPS games, there's no reason to bring up 3rd Person Shooters. Don't get me wrong, there's some good ones.
If you liked this you should do a review on command and conquer renegade, unlike every other command and conquer game it's basically a first person shooter playing the commando from the first game on the side of the GDI the game is fantastic and honestly I feel like the concept for that game would be great if it were Duke nukem forever, open world environment with objectives, a health system with pickups, of health and armor, a plethora of weapons with no concern for not being able to carry some like with blood 2 or duke nukem forever if it's a weapon you can use you can carry it and use it whenever, and also drivable vehicles and being able to destroy buildings and bases like a badass, only issue is no proper destructible environment which would have tied it together well, just give it a chance you won't hate it if you buy the game and try for yourself or check our some gameplay to get an idea of how it's meant to look
Ontop of having one of the more underrated badass commando characters who has the best voice acting I've heard and honestly feels like you're in a 90's action movie, I mean one thing I respect as well is when the game was delayed westwood and EA did a promo for the game where they had an actor dress up a havok and threaten the developers to get the game out, I mean if duke did that to the guys at 3D realms that would have been cool
Hi Low? What kind of game is that?
The guns were really fun with the alternate firing modes & the npc's were funny as hell back then. Also i agree that score was Bad A**
Wish they would mash up the good parts of RF1, RFG, and maybe RFA and slap out a reboot. FPS style but open world like RFG, part underground levels (to force linear sequences, with an open world surface that acts as a hub world for them.
I'd play that.
lil shield one eye dude sounds like an actor that was on total recall
