I played the local multiplayer for months with my friends. I would argue that it was worth the price of entry alone - the game nights we had have stuck in my memory ever since. The range of weapons, maps, and focus on fast-paced action, as well as the way you could deform the map strategically gave it a lot of replay in my mind.

TBH I played the first and wasn't really blown away. The story wasn't that great and felt rushed and the ending was utter garbage that I originally thought the game glitched out and messed up the ending and redid it to just be sure. the only remarkable thing was the geomod thing and that's about it. I heard ppl were comparing this to HL1 and some even saying it's better. like WTF!? really?
I'm surprised you didn't mention the final boss. Holy fuck, that final boss fight was frustrating! Probably the most difficult boss I had to contend with. Aside from that, I kind of did enjoy this game.
This game aint so bad, I had tons of fun with it as a kid. It has a killer soundtrack (one of the best in gaming history, seriously, so many catchy tunes), insane variety of really fun to use weapons and for a fps game a relatively interesting storyline and presentation. Graphics is kinda shit but who cares, as long as I dont immediately catch an eye cancer (Minecraft) I dont really care about graphics all that much.

At first I got my hands on Red Faction 2, and I loved duel-weilding UZIs, blazing with bullets all over the places with sparkles flying form the heavily armored elite soldiers ( really not enough of those in the game). Grenade launcher that lefts nothing from the enemies, but the pair of half-baked legs was hell of a pleasure as well. I must be really nostalgically biased, I can see, but can't really feel why people hate this series so much, just as much as I love it. I completely agree that each game in a series have A TON of missed potential, which is getting worse from sequel to sequel.
You know I loved red faction 1 and guerilla but I cant say i enjoyed 2 that much. I cant quite put my finger on why. I just felt the first game had a more unstoppable badass feel to it you know. Which is weird because the second game had alot of moments in it, but the first one just feels more badass.
When I was a child, I bought the Xbox version of this game on a whim at a pawn shop and absolutely fell in love with it. In a few ways, it reminded me of the Halo 2 I wanted, and the campaign was great fun, although I only ever played it once (maybe twice?). I spent the majority of my time with the game playing the bot matches. At first, I wasn't too fond of how differently it played versus the campaign, but I quickly grew to enjoy it and I spent many hours playing TDM and CTF matches. This review revitalized my interest in the game and I ended up purchasing the game on Steam midway through the video.

Wow, im pretty impressed you actually managed to finish this game, I really enjoyed the first one but the way the health system worked in this game was atrocious. *Edit* while not playing much of any Halo, I can say that the way health worked in that game was really good. But yes, I can see the comparison.
i wouldn't say Red Faction II is a weak sequel, i loved the game as a kid; and still do very much so as an adult Lol, it's got a shitload of badass weapons, awesome characters, funny dialog, and pretty good looking environments; the only real thing that puts the game down is the story length and the ending boss fight, that fight can go fuck itself.
I'm playing it right now and I have no idea what game you played lol. The story of Red Faction is nothing special but the story of Red Faction 2 is just plain stupid. Even in medium settings, enemies are just bullet sponges and it gets annoying after awhile.Don't get me started on those exploding spider bots. It annoys me how in some sections there are invisible walls for no reason, limiting the amount of area I can strafe around and take cover in etc. A lot of times you have to blow up a specific wall to move forward. Attack the eastern wall and nothing happens. Cause apparently you need to attack the western wall even though they're the exact same damn wall lol Very disappointing game overall. I do like a number of the weapons though.

The most thing I remember from this game, is the unskippable cutscenes before the last boss battle, which you force to watch over and over again every time you die in that boss battle (and it's pretty hard boss)!
I just played this game after having it on my shelf for 10 years. you were spot on at it pointing out why it's such a disappointing sequel in the campaign, really has NONE of the magic of RF1 and that game wasn't prefect either. It makes up for it with that awesome multiplayer though, they put more effort into that than the main game.
I was so little when I played this game and I remember getting stuck on the sniper girl level, not because it was hard but because the graveyard and I think I remember zombies terrifying me

I can admit that Red Faction 2 was not the best, but it was pretty fun for the time I played it for back in the day. I recently bought it again for my PS2 and have been playing it in my spare time, and I can say now that it feels more like Doom than Red Faction. The go mod isn't in full effect, but it is very satisfying to watch the environment break apart and blow up and everything in firefights. It has this epic feel to it, and it's hard to find PS2 shooters that really feel that Epic. Call of Duty finest Hour, black, and Red Faction 2 are the ones I often remember. Great review G-Man.
When I was younger (about 8) I remember trying to complete this at my Godparent's house. I remember sitting down with my godfather every-time I was round there. It was great, used to blast about in bot mode and have a blast. I even tried to complete the campaign once, until now I didn't realize how short this game was! During this video there was only a single clip that I didn't recognize! I was under the impression that I had only completed less than half of the main story :S. Anyway this and the first red faction were the two games that really got me into the video gaming world. No Nintendo for me, Strategy and arena (Objective) FPS all the way.
I had this on PS2 back then as well. It looked much better on a low res CRT TV than blown up on a PC monitor with every detail visible. Just how it was back then.
I have 1 and Guerilla for Steam and 2 for Gamecube, I think all of them are fun. The splitscreen on console is probably a nice extra that helps it to become good there for me.

This was my first gateway into the Red faction series and i love it and its a team concept, i never played the original unfortunately. But red faction 2 was underrated and badass on multiplayer and voice performances, molov was awesome! The other games after this don't look nearly as appealing as the originals.

Hey, could you make a Dead Space 1/2/3 review? Nice videos btw! Red Faction 2's only redeemable feature is the multiplayer, which I guess extends its life time a bit more after finishing the main story. Then you can play vs the bots with the pretty fun guns. Kind of like Killzone 1.
The game gets a lot more fun once you use the Super Health cheat code, which accelerates the health regen like crazy. You can still die to burst damage or sustained fire, but you're able to play a lot more quick and loose with it.

This was free on Xbox last month. I had limited experience with the franchise prior and was very excited to play. I went in mostly blind, only knowing it was an old-school shooter; my favorite genre. I couldn’t help but be disappointed. The game felt lackluster and dispassionate, and now that I know about the first game and the sequels, I can’t help but feel even more so.
Out of the games you've played I'm surprised you haven't touched games like Soldier of Fortune: Payback, Area 51, Pariah or Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Hell Area 51 is completely free on PC and it's a damn good game in my opinion, I've probably completed that game four times - you should look at it at some point when you have the chance. Iron Grip: Warlord would be a pretty interesting one to look at, that's an incredibly fun game especially when coordinating with a team of friends on higher difficulties.
I know this video is a couple of years old, but I will have to say even though the main story campaign was mehh, I feel like the strongest part of this game was the multiplayer. Having great controls with various modes and pretty decent multiplayer maps made it fun to play with or against your friends. Like you mentioned, the weapons were pretty fun and diverse in this game.
had real fun memories with this game, playstation 2 had split screen deathmatch and its still fun to play, its sad they didnt make any online deathmatch modes for pc version.
What sucks to know is that the red faction series and volition have been separated since volition is owned by deep silver and the red faction IP is in the hands of THQ Nordic after Nordic bought what was left of THQ's assets. And Nordic WANTED to make another red faction game but couldn't because volition is owned by deep silver.
It's funny though. I played the PS2 version of the game and I did not know there is a PC version or even a prequel. So I went into this shooter totally unbiased so to speak. It also was during a time in which I forgot that PC gaming even existed cuz I was only playing on my consoles. And my first impression with the game was that it was awesome in all regards! Sure, it was difficult at time due to the no midsaving, or it was a bit dissapointing that not everything could be destroyed and only scripted walls and things in the environment could be blown up. It was still mindblowing and I haven't seen anything in FPS games like this before. (naiv young me hehe) The amount of unlockables, even though minor, unimportant garbage also kept me playing it. It's amazing how two different people can have such vasly different view on a game. Reviewing the game in retrospect truly seems to dig out all the bad of it. If I'd review it today, even I would end up with same conclusion as you. Great review. Thank You!
This was one of my favourite PS2 games as a kid it was back when games weren't corrupted by micro transactions or pay to win shit or half baked games where the game is broken full of bugs etc this was an awesome game and still is
+dean morris The funny thing is, is that it really doesn't have to. It's the priority of consoles that developers and publishers have that makes the PC versions dull. Very few games can strike a balance for every single platform and even fewer get developed for PC first and then console second (Look at the console ports for Serious Sam 3, they're horrific). I'm not the "FPS should only exist on PC" kind of person, I just wish development cycles would cater to everything rather than playing favourites and black sheep.
DarkStarAngelo unfortunately man, it's about money, and consoles make more money on AAA games so they get more marketing and focus. Especially back in the ps2/Xbox era. The ps2 sales were a monster.

Excellent review. Not many people remember that the original Red Faction games were FPS games. And as luck would have it I just uploaded a video about MGS 2's awful PC port.
For me, the bot match mode was the only thing that kept me playing this game, but it got me so hooked on it, I played countless matches against bots on Hard, and had a, like, 82 matches, 81 wins, all of them on Hard xD I liked how you could customize the bots as they wonmatches against you. The campaign, well, I didn't like it, but as a kis, the bot match was the best. I liked the game for that.
I liked using the Singularity gun in RF Armageddon, but with infinite ammo, as it's the more fun gun to use, because you shot 3 black holes and watch every enemy get eaten by it, it's fucking beautiful.Singularity/Black Hole gun types should be in FPSs in general, because they are fun to use
I always loved the original and didn't think it needed a sequel. It's on sale on PSN for like 3 bucks right now though, so not a huge loss even if it's disappointingm
It's easy to see that Red Faction II is more for consoles then for the PC even considering the graphical quality. They were lazy with the PC port. It's also easy to go through the game using mainly the Grenade Launcher and the NICW weapons which kill the difficulty of the game unless it's played on the hardest setting.

I remember playing this on the XBOX when I was like 12 years old, and I was a huge fan of the first game. It was such a let down, felt nothing like the original. I also remember how annoying the last boss was, because there was like an unskippable 5 minute cutscene before the fight, and I had some trouble with it, and sitting through that shit like five times really starts to get to you.
+gggmanlives There's a game on Steam that's inspired by F.E.A.R. and runs on the Half-Life 2 engine. It's called 'Underhell' and would make for another interesting review, I would've thought. Either way, keep up the good work.
The main reason this game is so memorable to me is that it was the first game I played that let you kill civilians without insta-failing the mission if you did and had consequences for your actions. I just went full Rambo and killed a bunch of civilians along the way and got tried as a terrorist / war criminal and got executed. I thought the game just had a bad ending and I was peeved, until I figured out that I got that ending because of what I did, and I thought that was pretty cool.
lol what four hours? idk when i was a kid playing this i never finnish'd it in four hours. it took me like 2-3 days when i played it. But the local MP was the shit. Had so much fun with friends playing this back then :D...good times... now i have to work 7-5 and only really get to play video games at the weekend and most of my friends dont life near me anymore :c
Harsh review, but I suppose I can see it now in retrospect. I loved the weapon designs as a kid, and had hours on hours in local multi with my buddies. I have nothing but good memories about this game.
Capture the Flag was a blast with bots and a couple of friends in this. Set the game up with rocket launchers and other heavy weapons, and you'll have some fun.
Considering the average hardware of that time, you are being far too harsh on the Red Faction games. Remember making video games isn't a school art project, they are trying to create a profit. To make money, they have to move lots of units... including PS2 units. Beating them up for following economics isn't really far to them. It is quite the achievement to publish just 1 game and make sales... let alone publish on multiple platforms and continue a series. A RED FACTION REDUX built today in 2017 for GTX 1080 nvidia with 4k textures and improved physics would be a big seller for sure.
I disagree with you on movie trailers as bonus features. It's often really interesting to see what parts of the movie the studios decided to focus on when trying to advertise their movie, and the differences between regional trailers or teasers/full trailers (sometimes movies will have a half a dozen or more different trailers). Sure, it's not as interesting as commentary or deleted scenes but they can often be really enjoyable to look at compared to the movie, or compared to the other trailers.
This was my very first FPS game as a kid and I really loved it as a kid. Now,watching this video, I realised just how stale and dull the game really was.
Was the game great? No... but it was fun. It’s one of those games where you just have fun with it because it’s not trying that hard to be Halo or Doom, it’s just a good time killer. I remember the geomod element impressed me and was one thing that always stick out in my mind as the best part of the game. That and the sheer volume of weapons to collect. I like the sachels, hmg, and grenade launcher. Also the mp mode was cool albeit bland. It just seems like they threw it together way too fast.

I feel you, I enjoyed the first game a lot more than the second
This was free on Xbox last month. I had limited experience with the franchise prior and was very excited to play. I went in mostly blind, only knowing it was an old-school shooter; my favorite genre.
I couldn’t help but be disappointed. The game felt lackluster and dispassionate, and now that I know about the first game and the sequels, I can’t help but feel even more so.
Out of the games you've played I'm surprised you haven't touched games like Soldier of Fortune: Payback, Area 51, Pariah or Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Hell Area 51 is completely free on PC and it's a damn good game in my opinion, I've probably completed that game four times - you should look at it at some point when you have the chance. Iron Grip: Warlord would be a pretty interesting one to look at, that's an incredibly fun game especially when coordinating with a team of friends on higher difficulties.
I know this video is a couple of years old, but I will have to say even though the main story campaign was mehh, I feel like the strongest part of this game was the multiplayer. Having great controls with various modes and pretty decent multiplayer maps made it fun to play with or against your friends. Like you mentioned, the weapons were pretty fun and diverse in this game.
had real fun memories with this game, playstation 2 had split screen deathmatch and its still fun to play, its sad they didnt make any online deathmatch modes for pc version.
What sucks to know is that the red faction series and volition have been separated since volition is owned by deep silver and the red faction IP is in the hands of THQ Nordic after Nordic bought what was left of THQ's assets. And Nordic WANTED to make another red faction game but couldn't because volition is owned by deep silver.
It's funny though. I played the PS2 version of the game and I did not know there is a PC version or even a prequel. So I went into this shooter totally unbiased so to speak. It also was during a time in which I forgot that PC gaming even existed cuz I was only playing on my consoles. And my first impression with the game was that it was awesome in all regards! Sure, it was difficult at time due to the no midsaving, or it was a bit dissapointing that not everything could be destroyed and only scripted walls and things in the environment could be blown up. It was still mindblowing and I haven't seen anything in FPS games like this before. (naiv young me hehe) The amount of unlockables, even though minor, unimportant garbage also kept me playing it. It's amazing how two different people can have such vasly different view on a game.
Reviewing the game in retrospect truly seems to dig out all the bad of it. If I'd review it today, even I would end up with same conclusion as you. Great review. Thank You!
This was one of my favourite PS2 games as a kid it was back when games weren't corrupted by micro transactions or pay to win shit or half baked games where the game is broken full of bugs etc this was an awesome game and still is

+dean morris The funny thing is, is that it really doesn't have to. It's the priority of consoles that developers and publishers have that makes the PC versions dull. Very few games can strike a balance for every single platform and even fewer get developed for PC first and then console second (Look at the console ports for Serious Sam 3, they're horrific). I'm not the "FPS should only exist on PC" kind of person, I just wish development cycles would cater to everything rather than playing favourites and black sheep.
DarkStarAngelo unfortunately man, it's about money, and consoles make more money on AAA games so they get more marketing and focus. Especially back in the ps2/Xbox era. The ps2 sales were a monster.

I liked Red Faction II myself. It wasn't as good as the first game, but it was decent, I'll say that much. Anyway, hey GGG, since you've reviewed some of the Red Faction games, you should totally review Red Faction Guerrilla. Totally different than the two previous games before it, but still fun.
Excellent review. Not many people remember that the original Red Faction games were FPS games. And as luck would have it I just uploaded a video about MGS 2's awful PC port.
For me, the bot match mode was the only thing that kept me playing this game, but it got me so hooked on it, I played countless matches against bots on Hard, and had a, like, 82 matches, 81 wins, all of them on Hard xD I liked how you could customize the bots as they wonmatches against you. The campaign, well, I didn't like it, but as a kis, the bot match was the best. I liked the game for that.

I liked using the Singularity gun in RF Armageddon, but with infinite ammo, as it's the more fun gun to use, because you shot 3 black holes and watch every enemy get eaten by it, it's fucking beautiful.Singularity/Black Hole gun types should be in FPSs in general, because they are fun to use
I am not ashamed to admit that back in my console days I loved this game. I played it with my brother all the time.
I always loved the original and didn't think it needed a sequel. It's on sale on PSN for like 3 bucks right now though, so not a huge loss even if it's disappointingm
It's easy to see that Red Faction II is more for consoles then for the PC even considering the graphical quality. They were lazy with the PC port. It's also easy to go through the game using mainly the Grenade Launcher and the NICW weapons which kill the difficulty of the game unless it's played on the hardest setting.

This game was really really good. Doesn't deserve the hate at all. Really good story too. It game out in 2002. 16 years ago. Keep that in mind.
I enjoyed this game on the PS2, mostly for the multiplayer. I'd play split screen with a friend against bots for hours and hours. I also like the amount of guns

crazy how people have such differences of opinion, back when it was released it was ahead of its time in my eyes with mp bots and environment.. missions youre under water, flying, tank driving and even in a mech suit >> shits ace and going to replay soon
The multiplayer was really the only thing I played around with in this game. Fun just take the impact grenade launcher and destroy legions of bots.
I remember playing this on the XBOX when I was like 12 years old, and I was a huge fan of the first game. It was such a let down, felt nothing like the original. I also remember how annoying the last boss was, because there was like an unskippable 5 minute cutscene before the fight, and I had some trouble with it, and sitting through that shit like five times really starts to get to you.
The Rain of Fire cheat code alone made Red Faction 2 worth playing for me lol. God damn I miss cheat codes now it's just micro transactions.

+gggmanlives There's a game on Steam that's inspired by F.E.A.R. and runs on the Half-Life 2 engine. It's called 'Underhell' and would make for another interesting review, I would've thought. Either way, keep up the good work.
The main reason this game is so memorable to me is that it was the first game I played that let you kill civilians without insta-failing the mission if you did and had consequences for your actions. I just went full Rambo and killed a bunch of civilians along the way and got tried as a terrorist / war criminal and got executed.
I thought the game just had a bad ending and I was peeved, until I figured out that I got that ending because of what I did, and I thought that was pretty cool.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is such an awesome game. Probably, one of the best open world games.
lol what four hours? idk when i was a kid playing this i never finnish'd it in four hours. it took me like 2-3 days when i played it. But the local MP was the shit. Had so much fun with friends playing this back then :D...good times... now i have to work 7-5 and only really get to play video games at the weekend and most of my friends dont life near me anymore :c
Harsh review, but I suppose I can see it now in retrospect. I loved the weapon designs as a kid, and had hours on hours in local multi with my buddies. I have nothing but good memories about this game.
Why are playing it stretched? It looks horrible, use aspect ratio scaling in your video drivers.
Capture the Flag was a blast with bots and a couple of friends in this. Set the game up with rocket launchers and other heavy weapons, and you'll have some fun.

Considering the average hardware of that time, you are being far too harsh on the Red Faction games. Remember making video games isn't a school art project, they are trying to create a profit. To make money, they have to move lots of units... including PS2 units. Beating them up for following economics isn't really far to them. It is quite the achievement to publish just 1 game and make sales... let alone publish on multiple platforms and continue a series. A RED FACTION REDUX built today in 2017 for GTX 1080 nvidia with 4k textures and improved physics would be a big seller for sure.

I disagree with you on movie trailers as bonus features. It's often really interesting to see what parts of the movie the studios decided to focus on when trying to advertise their movie, and the differences between regional trailers or teasers/full trailers (sometimes movies will have a half a dozen or more different trailers). Sure, it's not as interesting as commentary or deleted scenes but they can often be really enjoyable to look at compared to the movie, or compared to the other trailers.

This was my very first FPS game as a kid and I really loved it as a kid.
Now,watching this video, I realised just how stale and dull the game really was.
Ah, nothing says a cheap PC port like oversized HUD elements, especially compared to the original.

Was the game great? No... but it was fun. It’s one of those games where you just have fun with it because it’s not trying that hard to be Halo or Doom, it’s just a good time killer. I remember the geomod element impressed me and was one thing that always stick out in my mind as the best part of the game. That and the sheer volume of weapons to collect. I like the sachels, hmg, and grenade launcher. Also the mp mode was cool albeit bland. It just seems like they threw it together way too fast.
So, Red Faction Guerrilla next?
