6:43 actually, the game is really gory. I'm not sure how or why but I guess your copy had the blood/gore turned off?? This game has some extremely satisfying gibbing explosions that made the combat friggin' awesome for me. Shame you didn't get to experience that. I know the PC version has it, so I'm not sure what happened to you there...
I was about to comment this, I swear I remembered the snakemen having green blood and the space-gorrillas had purple-blood with explosions gibbing enemies and their corpses.
Yea I concur. I have the XBOX version and this game is certainly not shy on blood and gore. Enemies bleed out when you blast them and the rocket launcher turned them into giblets. Also the Shock Cannon you acquire immediately turns any enemy into gibs the moment you fire it at them.
This game was so solid. The immersion factor moving from ship to levels seamlessly is unmatched. The weapons are so fun and varied and the level designs were so creative
What made me so fond of this game was how EVERY single gun has an alternate fire to it. Didn't matter what gun you had, it did something special. Like the rocket launcher can load multiple rockets and shoot them all at once. Even the pistol, which really was a magnum, had the option of either precise shots or unload the entire cartridge into someone's face. I remember looking forward to each and every new gun I got, wondering what cool alternate fire it could pull off. The music was also a high note worth mentioning. That main theme in particular, made every fight seem so badass.
Wait what? You seem to have blood and gore disabled, on the version I played (Xbox) there's TONS of gore and blood. You should check out frameraters review it mentions the gore.
Loved this game and even played it recently when I was feeling nostalgic for the old xbox days. Fun fact: even though the gore was removed in some of the PC versions they goofed in one respect: Originally, if you blew up an enemy you would not be able to collect their weapon or ammo from the corpse. In the PC version if you kill an enemy in a way that should have gibbed them you will still not be able to collect their weapon even though you can still see it lying on the ground.
I agree! In my opinion, the lack of quicksave option is a major design flaw in any FPS game, too. It is really contemplating game design towards players if you have to rely on stupid checkpoints etc. Even old DOS FPS games from early 1990s had option for quicksaving like Rise of the Triad, for example. That game had an option to even retrieve the last quicksave by pressing Shift + F9 if you saved in a crappy situation by mistake. I have never seen that good and well executed quick save mechanics since the original ROTT :) Mace Griffin seems pretty much very mediocre FPS, no wonder that I never heard about it when it was released in 2003.
It has a second mode were you can load up to I think up to four or five shots and it fires them like crazy. That may be why it wasn't as powerful with just one shot.
In the UK this game DOES have blood and gore, when you lock onto the enemies with the assault rifle after the barrel speeds up they just start spraying blood everywhere. And the sniper head shots get significantly more satisfying. Pretty sure you can gib too
Thanks for taking a look at this. I picked this up on Xbox when it first came out but found it pretty lackluster in the beginning. I ended up returning it for something else. Looking at your footage though, it looks better than I remember. I may have to pick up another copy.
First time I heard about this game was a year ago, I think, but never saw any clips from it. All things considered, it should have been a blast to play back in those days (early 2000s). Personally, I think we had more interesting shooters around that time, especially on PC. Nice review as always, man!
I remember the ps2 version I was often shocked as a kid at how gory it was! The shock cannon in particular explodes people into bloody bits. Same with the other explosive weapons. They must have left that out of the pc version.
I remember a long time ago when I was playing this game, I blasted someone to pieces and paused the game as soon as they exploded and noticed that each body part has a separate chunk that would go flying... Do you remember that gore bits would get stuck to anything with a chain link texture??? Lol
I played Mace Griffin recently, there is plenty of gore and giblets, you can even see a large green blood splatter at 9:24 having a nice z-fight with the floor texture.
Thanks for finding this! I've tried to start this game on PS2 on at least 2 different occasions, only to fizzle on it due to the performance. Neat to see there's a PC port, and keep up the good work as always.
I just remember this as the Henry Rollins game, I had some playstation mag that had it on the cover I remember. It actually got me to look into Black Flag haha
I should get this, i read about this in the old gaming magazines. Good review as always. I keep recommending this channel to friends i feel would love it as much as me. Hope you keep getting subscribers. Thanks for the (sometimes hilarious) and honest reviews, people like me build win xp machines just to enjoy classic games that we skipped back in the 90ies and early 2000.
On foot sections, you can walk on your own ship and shoot stuff in space? Sounds like The Precursors, from people that made infamous Boiling Point game (also worth checking). And these space shooting segments reminded me Aquanox games. There is 3rd game coming but since 2017 there is radio silence from THQ Nordic.
What version of this game was he playing? there was blood on every single version of this game I personally played on, also the shotgun in this game was really solid in my play through one hit the really big dudes and the smaller ones would be stunned and would die immediately on the second shot.
Legit one of the most underrated shooters ever made. I just fired up my og Xbox last night to dive back after playing nearly half my life ago around the time it came out. Cannot wait!
The ideas in this game are top notch, especially for the time it was released. Too bad, like with all Vivendi Studios, such as Chronicles of Riddick, there's something about the controls and AI that feels a bit off to me. Also, like Riddick, despite its flaws, Mace Griffin is pretty good game overall, with some memorable stuff in there.
I got this awesome game a few months ago for my PS2 (Yes, I still playing on my PS2! jaja) And it plays VERY smoothly with the original PS2 joystick I have.... (It even has and and in-game optional "Auto lock" whenever you're shooting to an enemy) Btw: I Love your channel and your videos! Keep the good work mate! Regards of a loyal subscriber from Argentina! :D PD: Sorry for my broken english, have in mind that is not my native language!
I'm one of those guys who remember playing this with his dad on Xbox. I got stuck on a checkpoint midway through the game and gave up because I would fail at the exact spot, but the game play otherwise was good. I don't remember Goldman voicing the intro though.
Really strange that there's no gore in the PC version. I've played the PS2 version years ago and I recall that it was quite gory, you could turn enemies into giblets, especially with the rocket launcher and Shock Cannon.Guess they must have buggered something up when programming the PC version.
I tried playing the game twice. Once on Xbox, and once on PC. Couldn't get past the first space battle. Something wrong with the controls. Also, Gggman, any chance you can look at reviewing Shadow Ops: Red Mercury?
I fucking love Henry Rollins, ever since he played a marine in Wrong Turn 2, he was the most badass thing I have ever seen in my life. That newer movie, "He Never Died" or whatever it's called, was pretty cool too, he's a good actor.
you need to come up with a better discretion for some thing that has bad visual then "smeared with Vaseline". you might as well put that on a t-shirt by this point.
Interesting to hear Jet in this game. I remember seeing this at a Flea Market and thought it was some bargin bin shovelware game. Never knew it was actually good.
Yea my dad bought the game like 10-15 years ago and he’s mostly the one that played it which I would watch him, but eventually I matured and my skills adapted so I decided to play it myself, it took me 4x as less time to finish This & Turok: Evolution and I found both of these FPSs very enjoyable to play through.
ShadowWarrior42 Oddly enough I did own Turok Evolution at one point but the cover art scared the shit out of me so I never played it. I do want to play that game and this. But eh there's other games that capture my interest more atm.
This game needs a remake. With the recent re-release of RE2 I'd love to see some of my other old favourites updated. I still have my original Xbox and this is the only game I still have to go back and replay whenever the mood takes. It could definitely be brought back as an RPG. It'd be like Mass Effect and Borderlands having a baby.
I remember playing this game for maybe an hour or so before never touching it again. Can't even remember if I rented it or if I actually own(ed) a copy of it. To be fair though I was probably 7 years old or something and had close to no clue how to play it.
There was remake of this game on x360 and PS3 in about 2012 , as far, as i know. But the main character turned into black, and sci-fi outer space backgrounds changed into almost contemp Earth with few sci-fi elements.
Only played the demo on the xbox. The ship to on foot was so cool, I remember it blew my tiny pre teen mind being able to blow up fighter ships then dock and kill all the weird androids. Shame no one else has done it.
Played this on the Ps2. For some reason I struggled the most during the last levels with the aliens because I think you got a special weapon to use against them and it had infinite ammo but needed to recharge. Either the aliens did too much damage to you or the weapon didn't do enough damage per recharge but it was painstaking. Then there was some asshole with a beefy purple shield. Although a positive is I'd lure enemies into the hanger and use the remote turret from the ship to kill them
Thank you for the video. I played it on PC first, than a few years later on PS2. On console I couldn't even finish it because of a bug on the last stage but little details of the pc version were missing in console. All in all, I like it too.
Considering your enjoyment of good, meaty shotguns, you'd do well in reviewing the Guncaster mod for GzDoom. You get a quad supershotgun! Eight shells at once, it's a beast.
The game have a suspiciusly very similar grafhics to Halo... .i mean...Just look for a few moments and you will get it! By the way...the name Richter on games is a good sign
What I remember above all else about this game were those enemies with emotes on their screen faces. Oddly enough, I didn't see any footage of these guys.
Never played this one before, what's the best way to go about getting the PC version? Is ebay really the only legit way, why isn't this on Steam or GOG, publisher or rights issues?
The only memory I have of this game is a few hours in I was crouched in some caves by a machine with some pipes I took damage from behind me turned around and saw 3 spiders with one right in my face, I yelled mowed them down threw my xbox controller and shut off the game and sold it shortly after, if I can get it on PC I might try again as I can control myself and it was enjoyable from the few bits that I played
Wait, how did you get 60FPS in this game? I just downloaded an old demo and setting "LIMIT_FRAMERATE = OFF" in the .ini file did nothing. I couldn't find anything about this on Google, either.
Still wondering this myself. Got the game set up today and I have a headache trying to make the stupid thing even playable. There's no information online about fixing it, aside from a widescreen patch (which put the game in the wrong aspect ratio for me) and an executable that supposedly doubles the refresh rate (which did nothing for me). EDIT: I feel like a dork now, the patch for 60FPS worked, I just didn't put the executable in... you can find it here. dege.freeweb.hu/Patches/Patches.html
The first i ever heard of this was about 2 weeks ago when my dad brought it to me after finding a boxed PS2 copy drenched in water on a curb, guess i have to play it now.
I remember first reading about this in a magazine and then when it finally came out I couldn’t believe it actually was everything they said it would be. Really hasn’t been a game like it since. After years of shooters like doom, goldeneye, quake, halo etc fps games started expanding. Check out Breakdown by namco and XIII by ubisoft
You sure this isn't nostalgia speaking for you? Magazines stated that the game would be "Grand Theft Auto in Space" and it was nothing like that at all.
@@-CrimsoN-I don’t recall anyone expecting GTA in space but I do remember it not getting a great reception but I really enjoyed it. I had read about the ability to go from first person shooter to sit in a cockpit and then fly away, at the time that seemed incredible to me. Not too many games have even attempted anything similar since
God i loved this game back in the day. Blew my mind as a kid. Took me 4 years to beat. The last level likes to throw a game breaking glich most of the time...
6:43 actually, the game is really gory. I'm not sure how or why but I guess your copy had the blood/gore turned off?? I was about to comment this, I swear I remembered the snakemen having green blood and the space-gorrillas had purple-blood with explosions gibbing enemies and their corpses.
Yea, GGGmanlives got the censured version because I remember the game being extremely violent with lots of gibs flying everywhere
I remember the ps2 had a lot of blood as well
ozy versions of all games have no blood because the Ozzy government thinks the gaming public are pussys
Yea I concur. I have the XBOX version and this game is certainly not shy on blood and gore. Enemies bleed out when you blast them and the rocket launcher turned them into giblets. Also the Shock Cannon you acquire immediately turns any enemy into gibs the moment you fire it at them.
I am disturbed by the distinct lack of smiley/angry emoji faced space cultists! Those guys were my favourite!
"Normal intro narration is not enough, add inhuman screeches"
"in their continuing search for colonie... REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
nooooo, you cant just add a guy screeching and use that as the space fighter noises!!!
This game was so solid. The immersion factor moving from ship to levels seamlessly is unmatched. The weapons are so fun and varied and the level designs were so creative

Sono I had it on the ps2 and the blood and gore was on so it must be a pc port thing
You must have gotten a censored version cause I can recall seeing blood and gibs in the Xbox version (Mine was an American version)
Same here.
paxtofettel
I had the PS2 version and i remember shit loads of blood and blowing up bodies with the rocket launcher
Yeah, sadly the PC version is censored over the console versions which were M-rated.
That's pretty odd. No "patch" or something?
@@GuyOnAChair there is a patch somewhere

Stephen Stine maybe a remake

Psy Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Darkwatch

X-Force
Would love if you could get around to reviewing these.

I love it when you post a review of an obscure FPS.
I also saw FrameRater's review before this.
Thanks for reviewing this! Once of my fav games on original xbox. The ability to walk around your own ship while it was flying blew me away.
Have you ever thought about reviewing the Killzone series?
Sogard b Yes!! Do It G!
He only reviews pc games man.
Gwynbleidd I recall him doing a few console reviews. Am I wrong? Please correct me then:)
Gwynbleidd he reviews whatever he wants. He's reviewed the Resistance series for the PlayStation.
All right. He even has playlists for ps2 and ps3 games.
I like that somewhat flat texture looks for the PS2/Xbox/GC era games.
"SEE YOU AT DA PARTY RIKTER!"
I love Total Recall
This game was lost to fragments of my memory until this review. Dude, thank you.
Great to see you covering this gem
But what's up with that ear piecing sound in the opening?
Man that shotgun sure is a disappointment. I love a good shotgun that can straight up kill an enemy at point blank range.
I agree!

Hearing Beau Billingslea narrate background lore about space travel and expansion in that intro gives me series Outlaw Star flashbacks.

I played this on PS2. When you blow up an enemy they turn into bits of meat and blood. Not sure why you didn't have that
The first i ever heard of this was about 2 weeks ago when my dad brought it to me after finding a boxed PS2 copy drenched in water on a curb, guess i have to play it now.
Wow I didn't know Beau Billingslea was in this game, awesome!!
