A lot of the characters in this movie were selected from the original rosters from the league, my grandmother, Helen Haley made it in the film, but it is not her story. It was interesting to listen to her tell about her time in the league. She passed away before the movie came out, so she never knew about it. Great movie. Love your infectious excitement, check out a movie called Love Stinks!
There’s a big controversy about the end of this film: ‘Did Dottie drop the ball on purpose?’ Some people say no, I say yes and here’s why. First, Dottie only went to play because Kit wanted to go. As much as Dottie loved baseball, she knew it was more important to Kit. She would rather sacrifice her glory and her team for her sisters glory. Second: At the very beginning of the movie, Dottie (as an older woman) tells her older grandson to go easy on his younger brother. Then she tells her younger grandson to kill his older brother. I believe this is foreshadowing the end of the movie. Anyway, great review and thanks for all the great content.
@@Sindraug25 no it doesn’t. Kit still had to hit the high fastball that she usually couldn’t. Plus, it showed Dotties true love for her sister over her team.

It was just assumed that the men would work all their lives and the women would raise families and keep the house. Still happens today in some countries
@Kristopher Chavez Agreed. My mum grew up just after WWII in Europe and was the oldest of 8 siblings in a poor farm family where education was not allowed to be a priority. So much fun watching A League with you, Ashleigh! Someone probably already commented, but if the catcher is covering home plate or between the runner and the plate, yes, the runner can go right through them. Dottie needed to hold onto the ball to make the out.
It's interesting to note that there have been a few rule changes since then due to catastrophic injuries with home plate collisions. Baseball doesn't want runners smashing directly into the catcher.
@@iChristyD she was. That one slipped my mind. I feel like most of her roles she plays herself if that makes sense but in point break she played the character.
Ashleigh, I'm a little surprised that you didn't do some crying at the end. This movie always got me right in the feels during the reunion. The reminiscing, the losses, the changes the characters went through since their time in the league... Right! In! The! Feels!
I saw this movie shortly after my father passed away. I am from Rockford IL and I was pregnant with my first son at the time so everything was a big mess of bittersweet. I can usually get through the movie okay but I have never been able to hear "This used to be my playground..." without bawling like a baby.
I’ve seen this movie so many times and I NEVER thought that. I think Dottie is too proud to throw a game and Kitt’s win would be hallow. I truly think she dropped it due to the force of the push and fall to the ground.
"The Long Kiss Goodnight " with Gina Davis. If you like her and you like "Die hard" type movies (this is better) watch "The Long Kiss Goodnight " then watch her in "Earth Girls are Easy" for something completely different!
Yeah, Independence Day is a must. Also recommend Mars Attacks! and Twister, also from 1996, and Starship Troopers and Volcano from the ’90s as well… And if she hasn’t seen The Wizard of Oz, that’s a must too!
That telegram scene is brutal, but even more so when you realize how much like family they had all become to each other. Jimmy's move is heroic, but even the relief a Dottie would feel would be quickly tempered knowing one of your best friends just got devastated...and tomorrow it could just as easily be you. Don't know how anyone could focus on the game after that.
I was 9 going on 10 when this came out and I saw it in the theater. Even then, the time element and passing or moving away from such a pivotal time and people of one's life struck me really hard. Just hearing the song made me cry for years. Still makes me tear up.
The Sandlot is awesome. One of my favorite movies of all time. But Independence Day is obviously the greatest 4th of July movie of all time. "Welcome to Earth."
If you love Penny Marshall, notice Madonna's great dance partner at the Suds Bucket is the actor Eddie Mekka who played Carmine Ragusa "The Big Ragoo" from Laverne and Shirley as a DANCE INSTRUCTOR! How cool is that?!!
But at the end she kind of did. It's implied that Dottie deliberately let go of the ball when Kit knocked her over at home plate (we saw during the montage that Dottie could hang on to the ball despite being bowled over.)
@@pompe221 Just because someone holds on during one collision doesn't mean they'll hold on during EVERY collision. If Dottie had wanted to throw the game, she would have done so simply by letting Kit strike her out in the top of the 9th. Remember, Racine was leading 1-0 and Dottie drove in both runs for Rockford with that hit. Dottie had no way of knowing that Kit would bat in the bottom of the 9th, since Racine needed a runner to reach base to reach Kit's place in the batting order. That, combined with the look on Dottie's face after Kit hit the ball shows that Dottie was playing to win. On that play, as Dottie said afterward, Kit was just the better player.
@@pompe221 It's not that easy. Sometimes a catcher holds onto the ball during a collision, and sometimes the catcher doesn't. During a collision, it is doubtful the catcher will have the presence of mind to deliberately drop the ball right away as the collision is taking place.
Plus if she dropped the ball on purpose that would be a really messed-up thing to do to her teammates. Plus it would be out-of-character for a "passionate competitor," who loves the game and cares about the "integrity" of the game All things considered, I don't buy that she dropped the ball on purpose. In fact, it never occurred to me that she might have.
@@billleonard9930 Nope. No way she dropped it on purpose. She was cutthroat, which is why she told her pitcher to feed her high fastballs. If she throws that game, it ruins the movie.
Trivia from Oregon: Dottie and her sister are from Willamette, Oregon, now a neighborhood in West Linn. Whenever this movie comes up, some Oregonian is bound to mention it. It's a state law. 🙂
Also, Kit always swung at high balls, but could never hit them. Dottie was not trying to throw the game, she was trying to make sure she got out. I think it was a good thing for Kit to be traded so she could get out of the shadow of her sister. Umm, not sure I want to wait a whole nother year before you watch Independence Day, so hopefully you'll get to it soon. It has Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park and more) Will Smith and Bill Pullman, (this movie and many more.)

@@NovaResource That doesn't support your theory at all. The fact that Dottie is helping the pitcher try to strike Kit out shows that she is trying to win and using personal information she has on Kit to do it. That Kit is able to nail the ball shows that her skills have grown as a player becuase of Dottie's absence. Kit wins becuase she works harder, not because she is a charity case.

I just watched this video again and realized that there are two actors in it from Laverne and Shirley. The home field game announcer played Squiggy and the soldier dancing with Mae after the chaperone was poisoned played Carmine on Laverne and Shirley. I guess Penny Marshall liked working with them.
I was a catcher, we were always taught to have the ball in the mitt, and use the free hand to keep the mitt closed when making the tag, so you'd never drop it after that freight train hits you. lol
@@kennethtilton6137 actually, she's the daughter from Penny Marshall's first marriage. Carl Reiner adopted her (Carl and Penny were married for 10 years).
The amusing thing about Doris' comment about Mae's bosom is that, at around the time this movie came out, you couldn't turn on a TV, open a newspaper, or a magazine without seeing Madonna's bosom. They were everywhere. Good times.
The guy dancing with Madonna was Eddie Mekka. He played Carmine (aka the Big Ragoo) on Laverne and Shirley. He was an excellent Singer and Dancer. One of Baseball Stadium Announcers calling the game was David Lander who played Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley. The Baseball Scout was played by Jon Lovitz (from Saturday Night Live). Many of his insults and funny comments weren't in the script and were adlibs by Lovitz himself. Jimmy Duggan (Tom Hank's character) was based on the Real Manager of the Rockford Peaches former Star Player Jimmy Foxx. The scene where they show the player sliding into a plate and show a big bruise on their leg (they show lifting an ice pack off the leg) was real. That is a real bruise.
Hi Ashley, I am surprised that no one has recommended Practical Magic. According to my wife and daughters it was the best movie to come out of the 90s. We saw it in the theater and I must say it was fantastic. I think you'll love it.
Geena Davis is a phenomenon. An Oscar winner and a Golden Globe winner and an Olympic athlete (archery) and a member of Mensa (IQ 140+). You really must see some more of her movies.
You get strikes for swinging and missing, and for not swinging if the ball's in the strike zone. It's a ball if it's outside the strike zone. 4 balls and you walk to first, 3 strikes and you get an out. Three outs end your team's turn at bat. Sliding is legal, and she was safe because she didn't keep hold of the ball. Baseball's mostly popular in America, but several other countries also play. Geena Davis (Dottie) was also in Beetlejuice.
You explaining it reminds me of Blast From the Past when he can never really understated the fathers explanations, until he actually sees the game. I think she would like that movie too.

There’s a big controversy about the end of this film: ‘Did Dottie drop the ball on purpose?’
Some people say no, I say yes and here’s why.
I always got the impression she dropped the ball.
Oh man, you're totally right about that foreshadowing! Never noticed it before.
I wondered about that when the crowd goes wild at the end of the game and instead of looking upset, she looks proud and has a small smile on her face.
No, she didn't. That ruins her integrity and invalidates Dottie's win.
@@Sindraug25 no it doesn’t. Kit still had to hit the high fastball that she usually couldn’t. Plus, it showed Dotties true love for her sister over her team.

Someone probably already commented, but if the catcher is covering home plate or between the runner and the plate, yes, the runner can go right through them. Dottie needed to hold onto the ball to make the out.

"Dottie's gonna throw the game for her sister?"
No, she was telling the pitcher that Kit always had trouble hitting High Fastball Pitches

Umm, not sure I want to wait a whole nother year before you watch Independence Day, so hopefully you'll get to it soon. It has Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park and more) Will Smith and Bill Pullman, (this movie and many more.)

@@danh8804 I disagree and here’s why: At the very beginning of the movie, Dottie (as an older woman) tells her older grandson to go easy on his younger brother. Then she tells her younger grandson to kill his older brother. I believe this is foreshadowing the end of the movie. Plus, Kit wanted it more and Dottie knew it. Dottie didn’t even want to play. She only went because Kit wanted to play and the only way Kit would play is if Dottie agreed.
@@danh8804 People who believe that either don't respect women or never played sports. You don't work with and bond with people driving to a certain goal and then betray them at the last minute for some personal family BS.
@@NovaResource That doesn't support your theory at all. The fact that Dottie is helping the pitcher try to strike Kit out shows that she is trying to win and using personal information she has on Kit to do it.
