@@lisaspikes4291 I grew up in the city and moved to the country when i was 43. Going from having a Walmart, 2 grocery stores, and 6 gas stations all within walking distance to the nearest store being a 20 minute drive took some getting used to. We had a dirt driveway, which meant when it rained, we had a mud driveway, and just like in the movie, the car would get stuck. So we would have to park on the road and walk to the house which was about a quarter mile away. It was certainly not what i was used to. Live back in the city now.

Big controversy down through the years about that Oscar. She was a relative unknown up against a lot of top-tier British actresses, and some thought that Jack Palance (who announced the winner'name at the awards) had trouble reading the name on the card and instead just repeated the last name on the teleprompter. Palance tried to address the accusation that he was getting too old at a later Oscar ceremony by doing one-handed pushups.

As a juror, I've been part of 7 different cases over the past 20 years. Four were civil - three were criminal. The civil were incredibly boring. As for the criminal, two were settled while we were waiting in the morning to come into the courtroom. The other went the distance and was rather interesting. So, of the seven I was part of, one had interest to me - not a great percentage.
BTW - since you are an attorney, would others like yourself prefer professional juries who had understanding of local laws and such? Or do you prefer the selection process of the general public. IMO, I find 90% of people find jury duty something of a major hinderance and most try to get out of. If they do actually get chosen, I'm not sure they have the heart into it. A professional however should always be good to go since that's how they earn a paycheck. Depending on jurisdiction, I don't know - $60K each to a pool of anywhere from 15-150 jurors depending on town/city size?

    • @cavaliertunes3332
      @cavaliertunes3332 2 роки тому +2

@@mil2k11 I think that a professional jury could be a great idea. But it’s something that needs to be explored through trial programs first. A professional jury might introduce unintended biases into the system (e.g., are professionals more likely to side with the prosecutor than a more randomized selection from the populace?). I’d also have to research whether a professional jury presents any constitutional problems (on the state- or federal-level). It would almost definitely be challenged if implemented, and I’m sure the Supreme Court would weigh in on whether it’s constitutionally permissible.

Marisa Tomei was pretty much an unknown actress until this movie, and all she did was go out and win the Oscar. Today, she's best known as Aunt May in the Tom Holland Spider-Man films.
Others have pointed out Fred Gwynne's star turn as Herman Munster. He was already a tall drink of water in his stocking feet, and he wore these huge platform boots as Herman, making him well over 7 feet tall. He absolutely towered over everyone else on that show. Despite looking like Frankenstein's Monster, he had a really goofy dad personality.
The sheriff was Bruce McGill. His best-known role was as Daniel Simpson Day from _National Lampoon's Animal House._ He's the guy that stole the police car at the end of the movie.
You now must see _Goodfellas._ It's a (somewhat) real-life Mob story from the 1960s through the 80s. That's the movie that won Joe Pesci his Oscar.

I think this is a movie that gets funnier with additional viewings. There are just a lot of little subtleties that add to the humor: the way he talks to the witness about the trees and leaves and bushes like he's a child; Marrisa Tomei's rant about the deer; all the F bombs they drop (like when they come back looking for a suit after getting stuck in the mud); and her sarcastic remark at the very end as they drive away, "you win case after case, always with someone's help, so you have to say 'thank you'...oh my gawd, what fk-in nightmare!" followed almost immediately by the, "you think I'm going to marry you now? You can't even win a case on your own; you're fk-in useless." Cracks me up every time!

    Hello Ashleigh
One of he great and interesting things about this film is that there are one-liners and little "Easter egg" comments that become important latter in the film. If you miss them, you miss the "punch-line" or reveal. As several people have said, the more you watch it the funnier and better it gets.
For the month of "Love Beans", I would like to recommend 2 great staples of 80s / 90s romance movies: Say Anything, it has a few people you may recognize plus some very memorable quotes, bits, and troupes. Plenty of "mighty" men have cried during this movie: Some Kind of Wonderful, this one will bring 2 beautiful ladies seen before in "Back to the Future" and "Fried Green Tomatoes". Both also have a great soundtrack. This also has memorable quotes, bits, and troupes. Both help define and mentally shape a generation of lovers. Sincerely hoped you get around to watching.

The issue with his qualifications is that, even he's passed the bar, he hasn't passed the bar in Alabama. A judge may rule that an attorney from a different jurisdiction (like NY) could practice in a given trial (called pro hac vice, or in this matter). So, the judge asks him about his history to decide whether to approve this. For cases where the death penalty is a possibility (a capital case), the defense attorney has to be established as having a substantial practice history in criminal defense, usually second chairing (assisting) in other capital cases. All in all, My Cousin Vinny is one of the most accurate legal movies ever. My Evidence professor showed us clips of it in Law School.

It's a shame you didn't keep all of her speech about how the car was wrong. It's one of the most iconic moments in the film and was part of how she won an Oscar for this picture.

9:07 contempt just means you were disrespectful in court. Which can lead to a warning, a fine, or even jail time. There was a guy who spent 14 years in prison for contempt. All because he hid money in overseas accounts so he didnt have to pay any to his ex wife.

That would have had to have been an obscene amount of money for me to even want to spend 5 years in jail over!

Marissa Tomei completely stole the show in this movie, made me crush on her even harder than when she was in the tv series "A Different World" , the Cosby show spin-off

If you’re a certain age when this movie hit, years later when Marissa Tomei was in The Wrestler as a stripper doing nude scenes (in her mid 40s I believe), you probably absolutely lost your freaking mind!
After this movie, Tomei was the sexiest of the sexiest in many, many people’s minds. Absolutely drop dead gorgeous with a take-no-shit attitude. The fact she won an Oscar for it and portrays a strong, intelligent woman is the icing on the cake for this career-altering performance.
(Also, she shows up in a certain MCU movie at some point and is kind tongue-in-cheek the super sexy babe to a primary character. That whole schtick is a reference to how EVERYONE had a crush on Marissa back in the 90s)

I love how the lowly Grit has prominent role in the film. Every time I see this movie it reminds me of my first week in the Army ( 1983) and all the northern boys didn’t have a clue what to do with them so they tried to treat them like cream of wheat or oatmeal and put sugar, milk, or syrup on them to try to choke them down. Us southern boys showed them that all they needed was butter and salt but they still couldn’t figure out why we liked them.

One of the things I picked up visiting my mother in South Carolina was eating grits (the "real" ones, not the instant ones) at breakfast. They're getting harder and harder to find in New York. I love them with salt, pepper, butter, and Tabasco sauce. I generally dislike Tabasco on anything, but for some reason it has to be that, and not something like Tapatio or Cholula on my grits.

If I was the defense lawyer in this case, I would've constantly reminded the jury that the gun wasn't found. It wasn't at the crime scene, the arrest point, or anywhere in between. Plus, the lack of GSR on the clients' hands. Without that evidence, there's no way my clients could've shot the clerk. Not guilty.

You may recognize Marisa Tomei as Peter Parker's Aunt May in the Tom Holland Spiderman movies. This is a movie that builds. First you get the witness testimony and he tears them apart piece by piece. Grits was important for the timing and the impact with the jury. They all ate grits, they knew how long they took to cook, and he used that to destroy the witnesses timing about the murder. The sleeping problems were there for humor and contrast. A city boy like Vinny couldn't sleep with trains, animal noises, etc. But the clamor in jail was normal for him so he could sleep like a baby. There are lawyer videos reviewing this movie and they are highly favorable regarding some of the legal stuff and Vinny's cross examination of witnesses and building a rapport with the jury. I'm glad you liked it!
