  • "Something's Going On" is the third solo album by Swedish singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida), one of the founding members of the Swedish pop group ABBA, and her first album recorded entirely in English. Her previous two albums had been recorded in Swedish. Recorded at Polar Studios with Phil Collins producing, in early 1982 during the final months of ABBA, the album was released in September of that same year.
    Phil Collins once again worked with Hugh Padgham; the album featured a harder-edged and more rock-oriented sound than the music she had previously recorded with ABBA, and it included the now famous Collins' distinctive gated reverb drum sound. The album was met with a positive reception by both critics and the public, with sales in excess of 1.5 million copies, making it the best-selling solo record of any of the ABBA members to date. The album has since been re-released several times, including a 2005 remastered version that contained several bonus tracks. Promotional videos from the album are included in the DVD documentary titled Frida - The DVD. Where this sought-after, rare full version of this documentary came from.
    As founder of the #getphilvotedin campaign, I wanted to give this gift to all the supporters of the campaign this Christmas Day 2022. I have never been able to find a full version of this--just snippets--so I hope you all enjoy this full version of a fantastic slice of Phil Collins history from 1982, It's a treat to get to watch him work. --Cheers, Traci Baker

    I tried like mad to see Frida's video on MTV when "I Know There's Something Going On" was first released. I never did. My high school friends, none of them ABBA fans, had all seen it. It burned me for 35 years..... Glad I finally saw it. The behind the scenes footage was also so so so great. Good job Frida, good job Phil. Also? There was a comment by Frida in the liner notes about tea and bananas in the afternoon. I think about that every time I have tea and bananas in the afternoon. It's not all the time, but often enough!

    So amazing to watch Phil , Frida and Hugh craft their wizardry in the studio. Phill is the undisputed purveyor, writer and performer of great pop music, not even counting the monster work he did with Genesis. People fail to comprehend the Swedish/Norwegian temperament and work ethic. Brits seem stodgy and repressed around loose and wild Americans. Scandi's seem to be the "serious" and methodical ones compared to jocular and "extroverted" Brits. So many misconceptions and chances to misunderstand each other. All that matters is what comes out on the tape and final mix of the song that resonates with the listeners who generally have no idea just how arduous and laboured of love it is to make a pop record. Frida is pushing 80 now and Phil's not been doing so well I understand in his later years health-wise. May the Gods(or God) shine down their/his benevolence and long life on all these people. They have surely given the world a gift over decades, that we can never repay.

    Thank you again, Traci. I didn't know Phil produced Frida. I have heard this song many times, not knowing it was Phil on drums and Daryl on guitar; they are both such great artists. Something's Going On definitely captured the Pat Benatar sound and did not sound like ABBA, I never liked ABBA. What a great sound this album still has. Phil's song that he gave to Frida, You Know What I Mean, pulls the heartstrings. All of Phil's solo songs have mirrored my life. It seemed like when I was going through the same emotions that he was going through, he wrote a song. Even though they make me cry, the songs and Phil's emotional vocals (not to mention his drumming) make me want to listen over and over and listen to the songs to the end, always. Thank you, Phil. You made me feel less alone in my heart and dreams.🎤🎹

      @@Winnipegger obviously she does not sound like Pat. Nobody said that. Phil Collin’s was trying to figure out what style of music she was trying to go for. @@Winnipegger again I never said any of Frida’s music sounded like Pat Benatar. I quoted exactly from the documentary that she wanted a Pat Benatar sound. Obviously that didn’t happen. Time changes , people chage.. Keeping up chages everything, Technology changes, keeping up is never easy. Frida seems uneasy, perhaps frightened of the changes happening, perhaps the fear of failure. Only Frida knows for sure. I think Frida will always be a winner with style.

    On the other note. I observed the cultural differences between the Swedish (serious) and the English (easygoing). Frida seemed nervous all the time. Like she did not fit in. However, the result was fantastic. I think at least that was a huge successful song. I know there is something going on, and it is timeless as it is superb!

    As a huge ABBA fan, of course I love everything related to them by definition. This album has extremely strong vocal performances from Frida and it's a huge contrast with ABBA albums where Frida also used the warmth of her low register for backing vocals to Agnetha's leads. And so even though I love the album, I've always felt that it lacks warmth. It feels very top-heavy to me, with so little in the low end of the album. This applies to both the vocals and the arrangements, and of course how it all was recorded, mixed and mastered. It sounds better on vinyl - I feel - while on CD (at least the 1993 Polydor version I have) it is edgy and thin. All in all I think it was exceptionally brave and adventurous for Friday to do this, seeing that ABBA was running out of steam by this time. I understand that many people will disagree with me, and I accept that. It's just the observation of a devoted fan, so don't think I'm dissing the artistic merit of this album. I still love it.

    • @vanzyli
      @vanzyli 10 місяців тому

      Yes, there are some excellent tracks on all three albums, and the production seems warmer than on both Frida's albums. But then Frida and Agnetha contributed such different qualities to ABBA. I rank them as follows: 1. Wrap your arms around me, 2. I stand alone, 3. Eyes of a woman, 4. Something's Going on, 5. Shine. But that's just my personal taste.

Yes the guys are brilliant writers and musicians but there would have been NO ABBA without the women and their incredible voices and stage presence, especially Frida. Agnetha played a mean piano too and did some song writing herself. They forget Frida also helped design and make most of their costumes including the iconic cat dresses and Waterloo outfits. In the beginning when they had no money Frida made them for the group. She loves clothes and took design classes In Stockholm as a back up if singing didn't work out. Very accomplished seamstress.
