I had a '79 CSi for 6 years, chrome bumper model, in Henna Red, no rear spoiler, although it may have had one originally? It had the close-ratio, dog-leg box and was a total weapon! You could throw it around like a mk2 escort, it was mega! I've got to say, everytime I drove that car, without exception, I was inspired to say, out loud, "god, I love this car"! The steering was perfectly weighted and was just a joy to use. The throttle response, in any gear, with that close-ratio gearbox, was instant, real shove you back-in-to-the seat stuff. If you floored it, the nose would rise high and the back-end would just squat down and launch you. The close ratio box, had 5th at 1:1 so was low geared - 100 mph came up at about 4,800 rpm. I used to regulary see 8mpg! Yeah, I drove it like I stole it for all of those 6 years! It wasn't that I set out to be a hooligan, I didn't, it was just that the car just begged to be driven! The brakes were amazing, I mean they would lock-up just like that at low speed, which you had to watch as it was a pre ABS model, but at high speed, they were always tremendous. I used to use Castrol DOT 5.1 brake fluid - don't skrimp on your brake fluid, it can make all the difference! It would do 38mph in 1st, 60 in 2nd, 80 in 3rd and 112mph in 4th gear. 138 Came up at 6,400 rpm in top gear (red line), but I did see 7,200 in top gear once. - you'll have to work it out! Mine came from new (it was on the options list receipt) with 14" BBS cross alloys, not metric, running 195/70VR14 - I used the Goodyear NCT/2 tyre, which worked really well with it. It's achilles heal was the rubber doughnut between the gearbox and the propshaft, and they would last about 9 months! It was so comfortable too, long journeys just made you feel great and you got to the other end, still ready for more! I nearly forgot, the sound the car made was just ace, Low burble at tick-over to 6-cylinder scream at high revs. It was really torque'e too - you could roll along in top, at low speed, with the burble of the exhaust setting off car alarms! I'm not writing this, not to brag, but instead to share with others what it was like. The car was well out of my league (clerical assistant in a local authority aged 23!) and I came upon it by chance. £700 in 1994! I rebuilt the suspension which brought it back up, to where it should be, at least mechanically. I think it was on 157,000 miles when I bought it (3rd owner) and I think it was on about 224,000 miles when I let it go? It was a money pit but even so, I know I am so lucky to have had one of these for six years and to have been able to enjoy hard driving in it - if I broke, I fixed it. It kept me poor, but boy, what an experience. I wouldn't change it for anything.
Thanks very much. I enjoyed the walkabout and serene atmosphere. I also smiled at the end when you stated this was the car that would never be sold, passed on to a son to become the next sentinel of such a fine piece of automotive engineering and design. My plan exactly for the 87 635 five speed sitting in my drive. regards
11:48 "but if you're an amputee......am I allowed to say that ?" was a genuine real-life David Brent moment, hahaha! Was even expecting the following: " I'm saying that, in my life, I'd rather not live without arms and legs because....I'm just getting into yoga for one thing, so...."
I always think that Delphin-metallic color's my best color of BMW 635CSi. I like this color better than black-metallic one. It is a very valuable original paint color now. Great & Fantastic ! :)
I recently turned 18 and this is my dream car, do I have good taste? (Of course I'll get something different as my first car, you know, something simple, but I'm planning on getting this beast when I get older)
Great video! Love your style. I hope it grows. You have a new subscriber. I've been eager to import a Century to replace my aging LS430 and as a unique daily driver. But I'm worried about the "real" cost of the car. I know that here in the USA it will require a headlight change (at least) and I'm not afraid of the added costs of actually importing and also willing to take a gamble on the whole sight unseen thing. Can you post the contact info for the importer you worked with? And is it possible to give us an idea of what the final cost was door to door? Maybe just a percentage over the purchase price. That would give us a real idea of the true cost.
Really good review. Yours looks in superb condition and super low mileage for a 30 year old car. There’s lots of bad examples out there and even the ones that are low mileage and claimed to be the best are often hiding sins. Finding a HiLine with a decent interior is very difficult too. HiLine plastic bumpers often warp around the tops. Rear seat space is actually quite commodious compared to today’s 2+2’s so is actually something of a packaging masterclass! Do you have a standard exhaust system on yours or is it a stainless steel variant? Look forward to more videos.
The Original One Minute Sketch Artist thanks for your support, no it has the standard exhaust, when I bought the car the rear silencer was the original factory item but corroded (about the only corroded item on the whole car - it’s still on its original front wings and never had any welding), I replaced it with a genuine BMW item as didn’t want to go down the stainless route, the only non original items are the wheels although I’ve still got the TRXs. I love your sketch videos btw, great stuff. I got into cars after a childhood drawing them in my school books during lessons.......!!
It's for headlight adjustment although it doesn't work on this car. You can see the broken hydraulic pipes in the under bonnet shots (the white plastic pipes that come out of the bulkhead on the R/H side). He also mentioned the cruise control but that is not fitted to this car. Lovely car though.
They are 17" BBS RC090 (BMW Style 5) bolted cross-spokes, originally from an E49 540I. They fitted 18" versions (RC062) to the 8 series although these are too big for the E24 I.M.O.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away........BMW actually made *QUALITY* cars, with great aesthetics. Now they build dull, anodyne lightweight 'quality' cars. BMW haven't manufactured a good looking car since the E46 M3.
Body made by Karman. Quality was very poor so Bmw brought the shells back in house. Don’t by early Cars. For some god forsaken reason Bmw decided to cut short the sunroof drain pipe in the A pillar just as it enters the cill, resulting in every time it rains water flows into your cills. Check that there is a plastic pipe exists the bottom of the front wings near the jacking point. If not make it your mission to fit a longer pipe.

What an absolute gorgeous classic shark, stunning im every way - much love to all my bmw enthusiasts out there
very nice example. I have a 88 Auto and 89 manual 635CSi.
I MISS MY 6... SIGHS... LOOKING GOOD AND GOOD COLOR...
What a very elegant and pleasant colour scheme inside and out..... A pleasure to look at...
Bmw nailed it with this , the new 8 series coupe got back some of that magic
I've got a '87 model inn dolphin grey - same color - but with shadow line trim, world bumpers. I own it for 23 years now.
Thank you for being impartial and talking about the rust! Appreciate it.

This exemplar looks practically brand new👌
My neighbour got one of these in the mid 80s and as a 10 year I nearly vomited I was so excited.
Car is timeless that’s the only word for the design
Such a beautiful car. Not sure if I want an M6 or a 635CSi

A lovely example, enjoyed your video. Such an elegant car and very much one I would like to own.

Would love to have seen a drive to complete your great review. Lovely looking vehicle? How much did you pay as I was looking at some myself.
Taillights Assembly are the same for the M1 Same Part
@realworldrides - Where’s the best place to buy one of these in the UK? A decent version? Do you buy from auctions? This is a lovely car btw.

Real World Rides thanks for getting back , I’ll be sure to watch your other videos. Glad you liked the sketches!
Fantastic !!!!
Lovely type 3! I do prefer the type 2 most but can't fault them.
The American importer, Max Hoffman, came up with the idea of the tool kit in the trunk. He thought Americans would find that "classy".
What's the rotary switch for under the steering column?

He also mentioned the cruise control but that is not fitted to this car.
Lovely car though.
@@cassiefairchild2488 I had no idea that was an option on any vehicle. Very cool. Mine came with factory cruise control but not the headlight extras.
Should i buy a 1977 630csi with a 4 speed manual or a 635csi auto? The auto is more expensive
amputee ?
your accent feels like it should of came with my 635csi l6
Rims please ?

Its absolutely stunning but sadly wayyyy too expensive for me😂

The only thing thats expensive are body panels, evrything else are like all other bmw from the 80s
The shark
went out of production in 89’ pretty sure it’s just a classic.
Cannot beat these cars. Well thought out and timeless design. Park it in a liot of new moderne days cars and this car will alays stand out as tops
