I was an amateur boxer as a teenager and am a boxing coach. I began my karate journey at the age of 40. Boxing is a sport that is more effective for kumite and bouts with rules. Karate is a lethal self defense art that attacks the eyes, throat, groin and everything else. You can not practice this with an opponent at full power. That is what kata is for. Karate for life!
Been doing Kyokushin Karate for over a decade and recently started training in Boxing at a sports club since earlier this year and both arts are quite similar to one another which I find it interesting, but I agree on your assessment on Boxing and Karate. Even prior to study Boxing, I 've been watching the sport since my pre teens. Age is just a number and I'm about to be 40 soon. We must keep training and continue to move forward!!
That Kyo movement is a straight line trajectory. The jabs Sensei did before the Kyo was a triangular line. What a way to trick the opponent's perception.
It doesnt matter. The trick is, that when a person is moving in a relaxed way... its harder for the brains visual center to detect that movement, until its too late. There are two visual processing centers of the brain. One is for advanced color and image sensing... the other is gross movement, which came from a very Primal state of our early development. There is also a Subconscious mind effect.. where the brain is basically "Listening" for the cues on how and when to react. The conscious mind cant react fast enough for close range strikes, as a handstrike can move as fast 32 feet per second. But as the OPs sub.c mind senses hip turning, stepping, shoulder movements, and even Facial expression...etc... it send the trained response into action. When the OP is moving in a non-standard, non-threatening way (no as fast, nor tense).. then its confused, and doesnt send that response defensive response out. Furthermore... because the OP can not easily detect the Vector of the strike... and because you are not fully invested into a single vector... you can also alter your vector as its traveling, without them realizing it.. and sneaking right by their poor / weak.. attempt to defend. There are other factors, such as it being harder for to see attacks that come from a lower gate, directly up to the upper gate. And in the case of one of Bruce Lees demos, Lee got the OP to react to a "Just Out of range" strike (feint), and quickly pulled back + stepped in further, with a 2nd reaching strike, around their already late.. and non connected attempt to block the initial phantom strike.
It's amazing. It is not about fake movion but totally mentally and human perception. I recall what in the demon slayer, Yoriichi attacks like a tree with no aggression and emotion to the demon and thus the demon cannot sense his attack
I adapt boxing punches especially the cross and upper cut. The karate straight punch is good to hit the torso and better to strike the face with cross. It is stronger and harder. these punches are laced with Karate extended middle knuckle(naka daka ken) and ippon ken( extended fore knuckle); and I called these punches "weaponized" fist.
