I am a cockney with Irish parents, went to a catholic school, worked 30 years on the railway, spent all my childhood visiting Ireland 🇮🇪 , one day I said to myself bollocks to all this shite , sold up and moved to Donegal - a tiny village and everyone says hello has a chat you wave to people driving by - but I wish I had learned the true language of my family- hearing this it’s just beautiful and even though I don’t understand the language it just hits me in the heart ❤️
I lived in Dublinn back in the 70's. I look at Clannad I think of how young we were. They had just made their first album. I would hitchhike up from Dublin to Gweedore where my friend's husband taught school. Sometimes they would be singing. Sometimes you would just run into one or two. Talk about a cherished memory.
This is one of the few bands that carries me away. They always conjure up waves crashing upon a rocky coast in a steady fresh gale. I sit upstairs navigating guitar as the cool sun beats bright into the room, warming my shirt so I can smell the weave. Inevitably, rain beats against the window.
I have only recently discovered this captivating performance. I have long been a Clannad fan, and this live performance is truly magical, and Maire is so beautiful.
I went to a Clannad concert in Wythenshawe, Manchester a few months before this recording was made. I have been to many concerts in my life (I am now aged 72) and this concert was one of the top three. The other two were Bob Dylan in Dublin with Elvis Costelloe as the "support" act "( ?) about 1997 and with Carole King and Van Morrison joining in the fun at the end of the show. The other was the Kinks in the Stadium in Dublin, a rough venue but Ray Davies and the boys were magical. Smoking was banned but the smell of ganja only added to the atmosphere! I an still hear their "encore" tunes - "you really got me", and, especially, "Days". I was lucky enough to go to real concerts before the arrival of the poxy "boy bands"!
Preach! Every one of those artists you named is a musician and a songwriter of the first rank. Seems they also knew how to put in a concert- or contribute to one.
I remember, back in 1971, walking into the Denmark Cafe in Jerusalem. Bob Dylan was playing, just for fun. I lived in Dublin most of the seventies, an amazing time for Irish music. I got to see them all. In the seventies there was fantastic music.
Clannad is one of my NUMBER ONE FAVORITES, they are SOOOOOO GOOD! I LOVE them all so much, I would do ANYTHING just to MEET them all...My favorite CD is called " In a LIfetime" I've listened to it for 6 years straight....When my husband and I were very "Poor" for a while, we came into a little extra money, he asked me what I wanted, and I said CLANNAD CD "In a Lifetime"..so he bought me ONE CD, all we could afford, I kept that one CD I owned for 6 or 7 years, and I still have it, and it's 2019 !!!! I will frame it as it is getting old and worn out... but.I recently got a NEW Clannad CD, I listen to all the time...thank you Clannad for all the beautiful music you brought into this world....LOVE to you all, Loretta Wilson....The newest Clannad CD is called ""Clannad ANAM""...and it has all my favorite songs on it...I LOVE it !!!!!
Je suis du Québec au Canada. J'ai vu Clannad à Montréal dans les années 80. J'ai discuté avec la chanteuse et l'ai embrassé sur les joues à la fin du spectacle. Une grande dame. Un groupe phare de l'Irlande. Bravo.
An incredibly high quality video recording.....thanks!, Tunes like “Siuil A Run” and “Coinleach Ghlas an Fhomair” (Clannad 2....track 3, side 1) have the effect of temporarily paralyzing me when listened to on a good stereo.....even though I don’t speak a word of Gaelic......thanks again...
Forgot to say - get a load of that whistle playing!!!! Wow absolutely fantastic stuff. Never thought I'd get to see them perform one of my favourite songs.
thanks for posting. one forgets what a terrific band they were pre-Harry's Game. They gained success with their "new" sound, but lost what it was they had that was unique and magical.
I don't agree, every artist has the right to experiment and react to the world around them, but a lot of the new age stuff was nonsense and very boring.
I'll beg to differ. I was spiritually in love with those early albums and missed the tight gtr and mandolin work as they started to experiment and explore, notably with keyboards. Some of that was a bit disposable but when they hit, they really HIT! The 2011 concert in the Dublin Church shows they lost none of their ability to play the original folk music. Pol just seems to have gotten better and better.
Thank you for posting this brilliant video. Clannad were beautiful in their early albums as seen in this clip. Not sure how the audience is receiving it in their futuristic silver booths!
00:00 Mo Mháire

@@dannieldf It's not! Mo Mháire is the title - in English 'My Mary'

The Golden Age of the Clannad and of the celtic music.
Nothings says "Folk" more than brown corduroy waistcoats, Love this band !

I lived in Dublin for most of the 70’s. I got to see Clannad a lot, also Planxty, the Bothy band, the chieftains, DeDanaan. It was magical.
lucky
I'm jealous
Ahhh! Thank you for sharing about that magical time.
Exceptional from start to finish. The Donegal harmonies are incredible... and that closing guitar chord at the end is out of this world.
First saw Clannad in 77/78 in Gaoth Dobhair where they lived. In those days they only sang in the Irish language. ☘️🇮🇪⭐️🇮🇪☘️
I used to see them in Dublin in the 70’s. They sang mainly in Irish.
were you able to understand the donegal accent? im from derry and i have to strain to understand (in irish)
Maire has such a beautiful pure voice.
I have only recently discovered this captivating performance. I have long been a Clannad fan, and this live performance is truly magical, and Maire is so beautiful.
Their later success definitely made people forget what a great band they were in the 70s...wish there was a DVD of all this 70s footage available.
Someone should send a copy of this early material to Elvis Costello in order to educate him .
Exactly. Call me conservative, but I prefer old-school Clannad (like this).
I had a huge crush on Ciaran back in the 70’s.
My god, what a voice!
YES! it IS something, isn't it?!
The harmony of this family blows my mind .

I cry often, the music takes my soul to heaven!

Listen to nil sin la (not sure how to spell it).

I love Clannad since I know them, since 1978, great music. This music is touching my heart and soul.
Amazing music, very bold since this music came out during the height of punk and disco.
Màire è bellissima, di una bellezza fuori dal tempo.
RIP Duggan brothers 🙌
Just love this and i sure am sorry to hear about Pádraig Duggan. What talent he had. We'll all meet up with him later.
WOW... the sound and video quality are so good!! And this had to have been from the 70s, right?
Joy George 1973, I think.
Joy George 1978
Like it came right from the original (restored/well-stored) film.
Their first album was released in 1973. This video is from 1978.

I had a huge crush on Ciaran back in the 70’s.

@@Maguirearch Er, no - I think she means Ciaran!
@@Maguirearch Ciáran is the brother on the double bass! :-/
Saw these live at Stoke Victoria hall last night, and they sang dTigeas Damhsa, it sounded as good as the version in this video.
I thought it was ENYA singing on the harp but I do believe this is her real family. Lord bless them all. Awesome.
That's her older sister. And family.
@@stephenindc9102 More exactly the eldest of four more sisters
Three of my favorite songs!
She could sing me to sleep every night, love it
Just learned of them. So lovely! álainn
Thanks for this rare songs of clannad!!
RIP...Padraig Duggan...
I love this group. I favourites. Those gold nuthuggers that guy is wearing is epic. I think he borrowed those pants from my dad
nevillesavage2012 wouldn’t exactly describe those kecks as nuthuggers lol

I saw them many times in the 70’s. The crowds went nuts
So beautiful! Thank you.
The family of my Goddess ❤️❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍😍🤗😭😭😭
Delightful (and it's great to hear without audience participation).
Beautiful piece of music. You can understandit if you have been to Ireland. Great performance by the way!
Thanks a lot for publication! I so love Clannad! It is one of the greatest bands of 20 century!
Gotta love the penny whistle -- costs so little but if you practise a lot you can impress like this gentleman
Clannad... Maybe, Best of the super group. Thank you very much.
Wonderful to see this early live footage, many thanks for sharing! :)
I actually prefer Clannad's early folk music days. Not so much the later New Age material they did.
Me too
I love all their music - traditional, new age...pop, jazz influences. They do it all very well.
Macalla was the best mix of old and new
This isn't New Age but traditional Gaelic!
@@gearoid8485 That was the original poster's point. I like all of their music, too.
Fantastic performance before their very atmospheric sound was introduced.

Siúil A Rún isn this version is a pure masterpiece.
In Deutschland gibt es dieses Lied, ähnlich von einer deutschen Folkgruppe die in kölschen Platt singt ( Wenn de Bur opp de Hockziet tanzt) .
