- There aren't many good videos that show how to install a chicken wire fence so I decided to show the way I do it. You do not need two people to install chicken wire as many believe. This way may take a little longer but will save you headaches and ugly fencing in the end! As always, this video is right to the point. Don't forget to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for future videos.

Some parts you may want for your chicken wire fence. Prices have gone up! Line laser helps you get a level fence. Ask your buddies if they'll let you borrow one if you don't want to buy one. Works great for other projects :

My husband said my chicken wire wouldn't work for my garden fence 😢 soooo I watched this and got it done myself! Not perfect by any means but it works and is stable for what I need! Thanks
I will be doing another video on this. My garden is expanding. This was one of my first videos. I think we can do a full tutorial now! 3 years later mine is still doing great. The posts everyone said would rot are perfect.
Your work is so neat and tidy and you taught how to do it very clearly & concisely. Thank you.
Glad it helped!

Great video. I’m 68 and it helped me put up chicken wire for a winter squash climbing wall. I was having a hard time and look terrible. But after watching you video it looks great😁
That's awesome! Glad it helped!
And good luck with the squash!
I am so happy I came across your video. The part where you're stepping down on the excess and mentioned that we can put garden staples down to help keep out the rabbits. Thank you for that!
I plan on building my garden fence this coming week and I will be incorporating that step. Again, thank you.
People will dig deep to bury a fence. I never understood that! If you flare it out a digging animal hits it and stops
Thank you, I've been beating myself up for no good reason, I'm going out and straighten out my fence B4 it gets hot 👍
Good luck!
Mate thank you for posting this. I had a go today and had bulges all over the place but after watching this I understand why. There are loads of videos on You Tube about chicken wire but you're the only one who shares how to tension it. Great video and the rabbits in Cornwall UK are not going to be happy :)
I couldn't find any videos that didn't show stretching entire lengths with 2 people. Even that way I still had problems. This takes a little longer but I fenced in a 1/4 acre garden by myself. Glad it helped!
@@FastGardeningMichigan If you could add how you tied off the wire at the corner posts that would be helpful. I know it probably seems really obvious to you but sometimes its those little things that make the difference to beginners. Cheers
The fence at the corner posts is just stretched and stapled. The wire I tie the fence to is pulled as tight as possible by hand, wrapped around the post a few times, them twisted around itsself. I use the pliers to twist that part making the wire even more tight. Not too much though or it breaks
@@FastGardeningMichigan Thank you that's really helpful.
Very instructive and yields an aesthetic and functional result. Folks that don't have a laser level will have to improvise a leveling system, but there are probably videos on UA-cam for that was well.
YT is full of excellent diy guidance, as well as utter foolishness. But then all crowd sourced recommendations are a mix, so one has to be discriminating in who to emulate. This seems like a well-thought out process worth emulating if possible. (I have a laser level I got at a thrift store, so this video might really help me.) Thanks!
UPDATE: I see more useful & practical videos on his channel. Liked & subscribed.
You can use a string and a small level as well. Won't be as accurate but better than nothing. I believe you can rent lasers as well. A project like this it may be well worth the rental fee to get the level marks that are crucial to this
lol commenting like youre the NY TIMES- love it lmao
Thank you. I’m going to try a chicken wire fence
I'm expanding my garden so I'm building another. Going to make a better quality video.
This was wicked informative, and very helpful, you are very resourceful!

Great instructions- thanks!
Thanks!
Very useful and I'll be applying it with my fiance for our flock.
I’ve tried multiple times to put up chicken wire and it always looks like crap. My husband said I’d need better wire which would cost more. I’m confident after watching this video I’ll be able to do it all by myself with chicken wire.
I don't think cost matters with chicken wire. It's all a hassle! But this makes it easier
I might as well be hanging fishing net the way I was doing it. Going to get some wire. Nice work
It takes more wire to do it this way but trying to match chicken wire to the ground thats uneven is a losing battle! Level guide wires help so much
Great job on the fence, like the description "right to the point". Thanks!
(Wife typing) This looks manageable for a momma and her 5 boys to try! Thank you! We'd like our patio back from poopy birds 😂
You've got a whole crew to help! Should be done in no time
Thanks for this! Gonna use a lot of these tips. 🙌
Thanks for watching!
Thk you!, first time installing and was fixing to goof mine up before i saw this!...lol...
As long as its installed level, and not a long the ground shape it goes in so easy!
Fantastic.
Thanks!
Thanks so much. That was really simple and informative 😊
Thanks for watching!
Great video straight to the point
Thanks!
thank you, really clear instructions.
Thanks for watching!
Good job. Gave me some ideas!
Awesome! Easiest, most effective fence there is in my opinion
Are the wood posts treated wood? IF they are Treated with copper etc you have to use either HOT DIPPED Galvanized or stainless steel 302 staples and hardware etc. The reason is there is a reaction between the treatment and the metals. In a bout 3 too XX years the staples will be corroded and then transfer to the wire and it will disappear over time... other wise great guide on thow to make a perfect fence
Good point. My posts are not treated.
Also hammering the staples all the way to the wood isn’t the go, meant to leave space between staples & hi tensile wires😊
This helps. Thank you.
Installing level vs. Trying to follow the ground is the key!
Excellent video, thank you.
Thanks!
Helped me out. Thank you
Great!
Very satisfying
A simple way to keep everything out! Compared to other methods, the cheapest.
Good idea mate!
What are the spaces between each post.
Uk we call them zip ties, and horse shoe nails.
10 feet, which is 3 meters
We also call them zip ties. Since I'm an electrician we also refer to them as cable ties
Hello and thank you for posting this very useful video! I need to build a CW fence of height 18 inches, roughly 100 feet long. How deep would you suggest i install the posts? Also, will i need gravel/cement? Do you know of any videos on the post installation itself? Thank you!
I noticed at less than 24 inches deep my posts were wobbly. I'd suggest 18 inch deep for a 18" tall post. To get the wire tight adding rocks and concrete are good because the posts are secure and you can stretch the chicken wire against them. If the posts flex the wire gets slack spots. I should've added the post install to the video.
@@FastGardeningMichigan OK thanks
This video is super helpful
But what knot do you tie that allows you to tighten the wire?
When tying post to post with a string i use a half hitch. Most important knot anyone can learn in my opinion. With the wire I use the post as the tension point and overlap my turns then finish by wrapping the wire around itself. Not really a name for that but its highly effective. I think there's a future video on this since its so important.
Thank you I will try this
How far apart are your posts? Needing a 100-200ft. ft. chicken run installed.
10 feet!
Dude..... should have attached with "hog nose rings". Sun will destroy those plastic zip ties. Looks good though.
Almost 3 years later, still going strong! Sun beats them down but the lighter colors last longer. About to add a new section of fence. Going to do a new video on the install.
My dog ( a lab and German shepherd mix) keeps finding soft spots in our fence to escape. We were thinking that maybe putting chicken wire around our fence to prevent her from escaping. Do you think this would be a viable option to keeping her in the yard?
I think so. Chicken wire isn't tough material but it keeps deer out of my garden
good way
thanks
Thnx ina star mt ny fence lol
How to install this on wall?
where did you get those wooden stakes?
Farm stores carry them. They are fence posts. These are 6.5 feet tall
Was this stretched by hand, or with a winch/ratchet straps?
The fence was stretched using a screwdriver against the posts to pull it tight. The wire was hand tight, then twisted with channel locks to tighten the wraps
Thank you for responding! Very cool, how much sagging are you noticing now after some time has set in?
How did you install the posts?
I suppose I could look up that process on UA-cam too but figured I would ask since I don’t know that process at all 😊
@@kristinolson8519 post hole digger down about 1.5-2'. Added some rocks from my yard, then quikrete. The quikrete was mostly the corner post that carry tension. Many middle posts were fine with the dirt filled back in
Thank you!!
That chicken wire will only give you 3 years at the most. I used it for a flight pen for my pigeons. 3 years and it was rusty and falling apart, after stretching it like you did. Just so you know.
Year and a half in, no rust yet. It's pretty dry here
How did you install the posts? Thank you.
Some are buried 2 feet. The corners are 2 feet down with quikrete since those hold the most pressure
Having solid posts to stretch the wire is very important to avoid the slack spots!
What chicken wire is that? What’s the sizes of it
It's been a while but I believe this was a 5 foot height by 100 feet. Regular chicken wire you can get from hardware or farm stores
What kind of wire are you using?
Electric fence wire. 18 gauge. 1/4 mile for a couple bucks. Fence is chicken wire
@@FastGardeningMichigan thank you so much!
Those zip ties wasn't last very long in the sun...the UV light from the sun will rot them and they will go brittle after a couple of summers. Have to use UV rated ties.
They are more for convenience to keep the fencing flat while stretching it out. They also don't bear any weight so they hold up well. A metallic substitute would be ideal
It's price??
Probably the cheapest fencing option. Price will vary by location
Mofo doesn’t show how to place it he already has em on fail as video 😂
Others figured it out from this video.
@@FastGardeningMichigan well I mean your video says how to install so um yea .. jack lol
