I interviewed Arjen about the time this album was released. He didn't have to be interviewed by a guy from a tiny rock website but he did anyway. I will always be grateful.
It is the end of the 21st Century. I have returned to my own childhood. I remember it all as the Dream Sequencer images mix with my own recollections. This is the day my sister and I realised that we would never see the planet Earth. [Johan Edlund, Floor Jansen] Daddy where are you now Forgot about your vow? You promised you'd return and take me to Earth Did you have to fight that war What was it all for? The honor of one's name, what is it worth? I'm all alone - we're all alone My future's unknown - our future's unknown I reach out to the stars out here in my house on Mars Mother did you hear me cry? You never told me why You put me in this world of rock and dust No friends for playing games No foes who scorn my name Computerized machines of steel and rust Is this my home? - this is our home This desolate dome - this desolate dome I call out to the stars: I'm alone in my house on Mars I'll never smell the ocean breeze I'll never climb the highest trees I'll never feel the burning sun I'll never meet my chosen one... in my house Daddy I forgive you now You could not keep your vow You will never return, I'll never see Earth My time has come - our time has come I'm emotionally numb - emotionally numb I'm headed for the stars, I'm leaving my house on Mars No friends in my house on Mars No foes in my house on Mars I was born in my house on Mars I will die in my house on Mars
Yep indeed as the song starts the soundscape is so heavily loaded with painful sorrow, then we get the explanation with the lyrics, as he's the last earthling left. You bet this song is heartbreaking it's about the end of Human race. What we all gonna miss soon or later.
This is probably my favorite song ever. The emotion is so strong, and you can tie it to pretty much anything that you might be going through. As if that weren't enough, it also sets the stage for the two albums very well.
I just found out about Ayreon a week or so ago. I've loved everything I've listened to so far, but this album is both exceptionally innovative and incredibly relavent.
This is the kind of sadness few people really experience, but is a primal fear of everyone, weather we know it or not. Imagine for a moment you lived on mars, with the knowledge that you'll never get to see earth. Ever.
I heard this song for the first time in 2013. Since 2014 I wasn't able to listen to it again. it was too stong, it destroyed me. Now, over 10 years later I'm able to listen to it again. Now i'm strong enough to listen to it without crying all night long. But still, powerful, too powerful.
My dance partner's favorite Ayreon song to dance to. The sad fate of the deserted children on an upmost hostile planet strikes her and helps her to overcome her own dark stories.
One of my top favourite songs by AYREON. Dreamy and epic at the same time.. Johan Edlund's vocals are really excellent... the kind of song I'd love to sing myself...
There was a time in my life where Johan Edlund was my favorite male and Floor Jansen my favorite female singer. Then Ayreon brought them togheter... Love this song so much!
I am moved by this song every single time I hear it. The raw emotions are conveyed in every melody and line superbly. Thank you for this wonderful song.
Feels like the epic music from the gameboy game ''Golden Sun'', I close my eyes and travel to another dimension while listening to this. Thanks Arjen..

This is just an amazing song. I don't know how to describe it properly - you knew what story you wanted to tell and you did it perfectly. How can a song about the death of emotion be so emotional? Because it really is! I love it.
Very impressive, but can you play "My House On Mars" on Mars? Oh forget, this is another channel...anyway, congrats for getting your music travelling in space.
@@InfinityDz I don't think anything in particular inspired this song but Arjen's Space Metal (Star One) is all about making songs inspired by sci-fi "works" (I mean "oeuvres" but I can't think of an equivalent word in English)
@@InfinityDz In fact, this song was written together with the male singer Johan Edlund so much inspiration probably came from him. There is a lot of recognition in his own band Tiamat from this time period. Worth a look if you liked this. :)

The honor of one's name, what is it worth?
I'm all alone - we're all alone

You put me in this world of rock and dust
No friends for playing games
No foes who scorn my name
Computerized machines of steel and rust
Is this my home? - this is our home
This desolate dome - this desolate dome
I call out to the stars: I'm alone in my house on Mars
I'll never smell the ocean breeze
I'll never climb the highest trees
I'll never feel the burning sun
I'll never meet my chosen one... in my house
Daddy I forgive you now
You could not keep your vow
You will never return, I'll never see Earth

I'm headed for the stars, I'm leaving my house on Mars
No friends in my house on Mars
No foes in my house on Mars
I was born in my house on Mars
I will die in my house on Mars
Johan Edlund is such a perfect casting for this song.
The production quality is insane for year 2000.
Never realized this song featured an 18 year old Floor Jansen! Wow.
But there she is, as young as Idunn, though wiser than Mimir.
Never knew that she was THAT young at the time..
Yeap, that (double-)album was when I first heard her, back when they were first released.

Majestic song made on Earth, but the keyboard notes on 03:10 are definitely from another Universe. You can almost touch the portal.
Johan Edlund is greath singer
Absolutely amazing
This is probably my favorite song ever. The emotion is so strong, and you can tie it to pretty much anything that you might be going through.
As if that weren't enough, it also sets the stage for the two albums very well.
Also more topical than ever, with all the talk of colonizing Mars to save humanity.
This hits differently now that confinement is a reality. Time to use the sequencer on myself and listen to this album on it's entirely.
I just found out about Ayreon a week or so ago. I've loved everything I've listened to so far, but this album is both exceptionally innovative and incredibly relavent.

Congrats Arjen!
My dance partner's favorite Ayreon song to dance to. The sad fate of the deserted children on an upmost hostile planet strikes her and helps her to overcome her own dark stories.
That culmination of melody at 6:22 is godlike!!!
It has everything i like. Sci fi story, Johan's vocal, space guitar, master keyboard and wholesome awesome.
Arjen is a genius and such a kind person. I simply love this project.
This is totally unreal music.
I like to play this while driving .
After so many years still so beautiful
Sozinha na minha casa em Marte. 03:13 sempre de arrepiar
Melhor parte!!!!
I thought about this song as soon as confinement began. Could be the hymn of it...
You know, listening to this makes me want to work on my sci-fi novel. :)
so hows that novel going? im curious

Espetacular, vale cada nota musical!
Indescritível a sensação de ouvir essa canção tão profunda, triste e maravilhosa. Resume bem o que entendo por "desolação".
The 3:10 part never fails to make me tear up. 🥲🖤

Madre mia hai sentito piangere?
