1989 was still a great year for G.I. Joe. Night Viper, Hydro Viper and Frag Viper were one of my favorites, well designed and built (unlike those later monstrosities, painted in day glow neon colors and dressed in latex). But 1989 Night Viper will always have a special place in my heart and it is still looking better than its modern reiteration.
I wasn't really much of a fan of the neon colors either. Most of my favorite GI Joe figures were the ones that looked a bit more realistic.
My personal favorite GI Joe.

Night Viper was my first GI JOE figure.
Really!? It's surprising to hear that was someone's first, but a good first figure to get!
Night Viper was one of my favorite figures, and was my favorite army builder by a decent margin. 88, 89 was my main era, and I remember getting him and just thinking how amazing he was. I never actually used the goggle much as I thought the figure looked much better and more visually balanced with just his helmet/mask, but ironically I can’t even find the goggle these days for a decent price to complete my current NV. I hope the new retro o-ring line releases him, but he’s one of the best imo.

Cool figure design for Night Viper. Which reminds me of the "VIper" episode in the classic animated GI Joe series. He called GI Joe and said he was "The Viper". ;)

So many of the figures by 1989 weren't really what I wanted from GI Joe, but this was a cool one!
I had a night viper. When I got a new GI Joe figure it seems like I always went for the Cobra figures. I think I thought that they looked cooler!

Another amazing review. Love it. These are definitely some of the better later ARAH figures. I only have one from I was a kid and it isnt in the best shape so for me not an option to put him in my display. I will get one for the display when I see a good one for a good price. Ironically night Viper was the very last g.i. Joe I ever bought. And the one before that was falcon. Christmas 1985 was the last GI Joe christmas.

1989 was the last year I was interested in g.i. Joe. I had turned 13. And I got more interested in music and girls. But I never had any luck with girls. So I should have stuck with music and collected g. i. Joe's on the card and box as collector's items instead of getting interested in girls. Lol
Fortunately, all of the girls that I had any interest in seemed to be ok with me taking them to the toy store on dates. Haha! Actually, getting into the music business ended up working out pretty well for me too. 😉

And I thought it was too bright when I went outside, imagine what it must have been like for THESE GUYS!
I think Sci Fi gets a bad rap. Flash was one of my favorites so I was glad another laser trooper came out. I like his color scheme. I dont consider him part of the awful neon Joe's that came later. I dropped off the year before the night vipers came out but they are a cool figure.
My friends and I thought that Flash was "GI Joe" when the line first started (we didn't understand that they were ALL GI Joe at first). He was the one that no one could find and the one I wanted most. It's possible that because I was such a big fan of Flash, Sci Fi seemed like kind of a lesser replacement character to me.
I never had the night Vipers I was out of g.i. Joe by that time I did get a few of the figures here and there and still collecting the comic book but by that time it was one of those things that just do I really need to keep collecting this but I still have all my guys I never sold them already thing but it was strange that these guys like you said when they decided to change their colors and make them all look weird Lexmark a military unit and more like they were group of superheroes
It sounds like you stopped picking up the figures a little bit before I did. There are a few more that came out after that I have picked up recently, but I definitely don't feel the need to collect all of them!

Yeah, that's how it went with me. I had him, but I didn't really "Play" with them anymore.

That's a good question. I think Hasbro wasn't worried as much about real-world gear by this point in the line.
