  • We are on a Route 66 road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles in our 2013 Ford Transit Connect micro camper van. Today we leave Missouri and enter Kansas. Today we also find out just how hard it is to stay on Route 66 in certain areas as we are re-routed a few times. Along Route 66 in Kansas we stop in Galena and Baxter Springs where we get to see the inspiration for the Pixar Disney Character from Cars, Tow Mater!

    We loved those 14 miles of Kansas. Like you, when we were there a lot was closed but a lovely guy came and opened up the museum just for us, so awesome and exactly the sort of kindness we found on Route 66.

    All those road blocks are memories. Sometimes the not so planned stuff are the best stuff. Yeah.... how exciting! Safe travels 💕

    Waiting for your next video. We just came back from a trip from Arizona and Nevada and accidentally found ourselves on Route 66 in Flagstaff. We drove to Vegas from Flagstaff purposely hopped off the highway and took Route 66 through Seligman and Peach Springs. Interested in making the entire trip one day.

    Always nice to watch your videos. Also, thank you for sharing information with us. For me personally, it is very interesting what you paid for the campsite, for example, for my planning.

    OKLAHOMA IS OK, you may hear that down there, lol. I forgot to mention when you get in hot weather above 100 don't put you glasses on the dash, I learned the hard way. As well chocolate doesn't fair well in hot vehicles, even with the air on... Safe travels!

    Good info on road issues. I may have to rethink my vehicle choice if and when I make this trip.

      The type of vehicle you drive will probably depend on how much of the historic route you want to stay on. If you are wanting to stay on the original road, there will be some rougher areas but the smooth new highway that runs along side of Rt. 66 is never to far away, for better or worse lol Thank you so much for watching, we really appreciate it! Best of luck in your travels 😊

    So my biggest concern is finding camp sites. We'll be towing our Casita and even though we're set up for boondocking, we're really not keen on it.

    • @mikeandheather
      @mikeandheather  2 роки тому

      That was the part we were most worried about as well! Thankfully we haven't had too much of an issue, we use the ioverlander app/website as a way to find campsites and always make sure to read the reviews of the places we camp before we stay :)
      We actually see a lot of tow RV trailers left at boondocking first come first serve sites. The nice thing about that is you can get to a camping spot early and "claim" your spot by dropping off your RV but then go out an explore! A few times we had to call it an early night to find a spot because once we are at a spot we cannot leave as we would risk someone else taking the spot since we have nothing to leave behind. Finding a spot to camp is all part of the fun haha

    Wow crazy start to the trip. Loving your 66 trip! Do you have a gimble as it seems like you don’t with all the bouncing around when you hold the camera? Gimbles hold the camera and stabilize the horizontal view in the video so viewers don’t feel tossed around watching when your driving or walking.

    • @mikeandheather
      @mikeandheather  2 роки тому

      We actually just bought one! Unfortunately you won't see it on any of our Route 66 videos as we have finished with this trip and are now in California! We are learning to use the gimble now :) Thank you so much for watching, we really appreciate it!

    Did y'all get to spend any time in Branson? I love it there. I try to get up to Branson twice a year

      @mikeandheather  2 роки тому

      No, we didn't! We stayed on Route 66 as much as possible so unfortunately we didn't drive through Branson but it looks like we were just above it when we were in Springfield! We will have to check it out the next time we are in that area. Thank you for watching, we really appreciate it!

      @@mikeandheather enjoy yourselves and be safe. Branson is kinda like a mini Vegas without casinos. Lots of great shows and attractions. If y'all ever get the chance to go, y'all have to go to top of the rock and rent the golf cart. Awesome views and you get to drive through caves.

    I don’t know why everyone skips over Springfield mo since it’s the birthplace of Route 66.

    • @mikeandheather
      @mikeandheather  Місяць тому

      We technically drove through Springfield but didn't have enough time to explore, especially with the event that was going on at the time. But, you are right! We will have to add Springfield on our 'must visit' list for next time as well. We hope to spend more time on the mother road in the future, visiting more spots, staying in motels and eating more food 😊

    did someone come around and collect for the camping?

    • @mikeandheather
      @mikeandheather  Рік тому

      No, we called and asked the City Hall, where we read online used to collect the payments, and they said that they did not collect the money anymore and that a Ranger would come around and collect it that evening. Basically they told us we were fine to camp there and to just wait for the Ranger. We were prepared to pay but there was no where to drop it off/people to collect it. We also talked to other people who were camping there and they said that no one came to collect it for the 4 days they had already been there so it seems to be pretty hit or miss! Hope that helps!

    • @mikeandheather
      @mikeandheather  Рік тому

      It is hit or miss, but that is part of the adventure haha
      We suggest looking up the must do places to stop so you can make sure you are passing through at a time they are open. A lot of the places are run by volunteers so they have random hours.
