To anyone confused (I don’t blame you), I meant to say that I have about 95% to go until I complete the series (meaning I’ve only seen about 5% of Marvel movies ever). I just don’t know how to talk sometimes. It’s a fact. I honestly don’t even know WHY I tried to explain it that way in the beginning of the video 😭 Anyway, thank you all for the support given so far. Love you all! ❤
Oh good :) I'm looking forward to you watching them, and that concerned me!
I love your reaction, what a ride your getting in, buckle up and enjoy it.
As a veteran in the MCU, here's a tip for a rookie, watch the movies in the release order, that's the way it was meant to be watched the first time, it makes absolut sense, trust me.
So, what is the 5%?
You are forgiven...
😐this once..
Something that trips a lot of people up (since it’s not really touched on in the movies); the shield isn’t meant to come back to him. Basically vibranium is really bouncy and Steve’s brain also got beefed up by the serum. So he makes all the calculations for it to bounce back to him in like zero time.
I saw this in the theatre, I wasn't sure what to expect because Cap is one of those characters that's hard to get right, especially these days when they want to make every main character an edgy anti-hero. Cap is supposed to be a "boy scout," and the writers and Chris Evans totally nailed it! It just occurred to me that this is this generation's Superman, comparable to Christopher Reeve's 1978 Superman. Where if he showed up, justs his prescence would make you feel like everything's going to be okay.
Well said Cap is my fav. I still have his comics, Chris Evans is the best 💪
17:35 What I love about this jump is that Steve really doubted he could make it, but he did it because he knew that Bucky would have stayed and died with him if he didn't jump.
I hear a lot of people calling this movie mid and even bad. I still love it. It shows Steve as a person before the hero and that's one reason Cap is my favorite MCU hero. He cares about people and will do everything he can for as many as he can while risking everyrhing of himself. Reminds me of my grandfather and I try to strive to be at least half the man Steve and my grandfather are.
11:31 "Go get him! I can swim."
And _that's_ the kind of thing that makes this such an important skill to _have._ You never know when you might need it, but in the event such a need arises, you're _incredibly_ glad to _have_ it.
There are some interesting points about how the super soldier serum changed over the years. Originally, it just took Steve, who was too sick and frail to be accepted into the army, and made his body physically perfect. It didn't make him borderline superhuman, and, very importantly, the Red Skull hadn't gotten the serum, and his Red Skull face was just a mask, not an effect of the serum.
When the Captain America character was brought back to comics in the 1960s, the story showed how he been frozen since WW2 to explained why he hadn't aged 20 years. A decade or so later, the character still hadn't turned into a middle-aged man, so the idea that the super soldier serum had an anti-aging effect was introduced. A few years later, apparently to make the character more "super" for marketing purposes, a villain injected Captain America with venom which, instead of killing him, interacted with the super soldier serum to give him enhanced strength. It was further explained that the serum worked similar to a virus to keep replicating itself because an ordinary serum would have already been out of Steve's system after all those decades.
Somewhere along the line, the venom plot device got forgotten, and the enhanced strength just became accepted as an inherent effect of the serum along with anti-aging, enhanced healing, and ehanced mental capabilty. If you pay attention, you can see that the movies hint at Steve's ability to immediately comprehend a tactical situation and devise a strategy as a resukt of the serum. Supposedly, he also has nearly perfect memory.
As mentioned, the Red Skill originally didn't get the super soldier serum. Just a psychopath in a mask, he survived to resurface in the 1960s because of an accidental exposure to an experimental gas put the Skull into suspended animation for 20 years. Over the following decades Captain America and the Skull clashed repeatedly. Steve still wasn't aging, but the Skull eventually grew old and sick until he apparently died, but he had arranged for Dr Zola to transfer his consciousness into a body cloned from tissue taken from Captain America. Thereafter, the Skull had a new body with all the benefits of the super sildier serum. Egomaniac that he was, he created a toxin he could spray out of his cigarette holder that killed its victims and made their faces turn red and shivelled up to look like a red skull. In a twist of fate, the Skull got a dose of his own toxin. The super soldier serum prevented the toxin from killing him, but he ended up with a permanenetly red, shrivilled skull-like face.
The idea that the Skull received the first version of the serum and got his skull face as a result of the serum was introduced in a very, very bad live action Captain America movie that was intended to be released in theaters for the 50th anniversary of the first Captain America comic book. Instead, the terrible movie got a direct to VHS release in 1990. Two curious changes the movie made to the story that didn't stick were that the doctor who created the serum was a female Italian scientist and that the Skull was an Italian f**cist instead of a German n*z*.
Two changes the movie made to the story that did stick were that the Skull was the first to take the serum before it was perfected and that it turned his face into a red skull. I think the Skull being essentially an evil mirror version of Captain America makes such perfect narrative sense that he should have been written that way from the beginning.
The Skull being the first super soldier and being permanently disfigured by the serum were solidified into comic book canon in a very good four part graphic novel series called "The Adventures of Captain America." The title was intended to be reminiscent of the old action/adventure serial of the 1940s. The story showed the selection and training of Steve Rogers, the evolution of the Captain America costume, the teaming up of Captain America and Bucky, and Captain America and Bucky's first mission and first encounter with the Red Skull. It also showed the story of Steve's first love interest - Lt. Cindy Glass, not Agent Peggy Carter - which refers back to the old 1940s comics even though Peggy Carter was a major part of Captain America lore by the 1990s when the graphic novel was written.
Bucky originally wasn't Steve's childhood friend but, intead, a young orphan boy who idolized Captain America whom Steve's army unit had adopted as a mascot and who became Captain America's sidekick after he accidentally discovered that Steve Rogers was secretly Catain America (unlike the MCU, Captain America in the comics had a secret identity during the war). In those days, super heroes often had a kid sidekick to be someone the comic books' young audiences could identify with, and Bucky was one of those, but I think changing the story in the movie so that Steve and Bucky were best friends who grew up together made the story and character development much better.
Wow, this was a really good read. Thank you for this! It’s pretty cool how the super soldier serum went through so many changes. Keeping the idea of Schmidt being the first to try the super soldier serum makes the most sense. And you’re right! the contrast between him and Steve is perfect and makes the most narrative sense. I also never knew about Bucky being a young sidekick! I do like how they made Bucky and Steve best friends in the movie. I absolutely loved seeing their interactions because they connected soooo well. My heart got so happy when Steve found Bucky alive!
@@kaylyptic Sorry I got so longwinded, but the evolution that too what was a simple WW2 moral booster and keep him relevant for new genreations and for fans outside of the US is amazing.
I'm going to share one more bit of super soldier serum lore. There was an extended story arc where, after so many decades, the serum had mutated such that it was killing Steve.
When the big brain scientist superheroes like Reed Richard, Hank Pym and Bruce Banner couldn't find a cure, Steve travelled across America to appreciate the country he loved and to find a new young hero who could take his place. Eventually, he slipped into a coma, and his friends kept watch as they waited for the end.
Meanwhile, the Red Skull, who was in a body cloned from Captain America, was suffering the same effects, but his scientists (under threat of death and unrestrained by medical ethics) found a possible cure. The Skull kipnapped Steve and used him as the final human guinea pig the test the cure. It worked, and so the Skull ended up saving his worst enemy so he could save himself.
@@kaylyptic actually while the Red Skull's relationship to Captain America (from just a psycopath with a grotesque appearance to an evil mirror image) did evolve and many complicated serum-related stories were written over the years, the serum we see in the MCU didn't result from changes to the serum in the mainstream comics. That has stayed the pretty much the same over the decades. The comic book serum officially didn't grant any superhuman abilitites- it gave recipents "peak human" strength, speed, agility etc, pushed them to the absolute upper limit of normal human potential. That made Captain America stronger than the best Olympic powerlifter who ever competed, faster than the best Olymp[ic sprinter in history, more agile than the best gymnast etc. And while a dedicated athletic prodigy could only hope to reach such a level in one area through years of rigorous training and diet, Steve Rogers was at the theoretical maximum in multiple categories, and the serum transformed him instantly. In contrast, Bruce Wayne over at DC developed himself into something analogous (their version of the strongest, fastest, most agile a normal human could become) through many years of hard work, training with martial arts masters around the world.
However, just like Batman Captain America had no super powers. He was a very impressive physical specimen, but none of his physical traits reached levels that would be considered superhuman. In the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe published in the 1980s, it was stated that Captain America could lift a maximum of 800 lbs overhead in a military press. And given that strength, he could bench press about 1200 lbs. That was the official strength level that mainstream universe (Earth 616) Captain America. The serum also sharpened his mental acuity and gave him effectively unlimitied endurance, so Cap could exert himself for hours without tiring.
But in the MCU Captain America is clearly superhuman- thats because in 2001 Marvel Comics introduced an alternate universe (Earth-1610, also known as the Ultimate universe) where the classic heroes had been rewritten new twists. Their origin stories had been rewitten for the modern era rather than the 1960s. In Captain America's case, the super-soldier serum was rewritten so that it didn't just grant peak human physical ability, it went beyond that to superhuman level. Ultimate Captain America could lift about 3-5 tons and had a minor healing factor which allowed him to fully recover from a knife wound in a few hours, or a gunshot in a couple of days. That version of the serum is what Marvel Studios chose to implement in the MCU. The Ultimate universe is also where the black Nick Fury modeled after Samuel L Jackson and Iron Man's identity being public knowledge came from, not the mainstream 616 comics. The MCU started off as a hybrid of two different comic book universes.
So the Erskine Super Soldier serum is a big thing in the MCU - the Red Skull was supposedly the result of an initial failed version (though he was stronger than a normal man). They mention in passing in Avengers that the Hulk was created by attempts to replicate it as well. Erskine shows up among the pictures of famous scientists in high schools in MCU movies.
Good reaction. Look forward to seeing more.
Agent Carter had her own tv series. It’s only a couple seasons long but it’s a fun watch. It takes place some time after this movie.
I definitely want to watch that series at some point. Agent Carter is such a well written character
Agent Carter is top notch. Don't sleep on it!
This remains my favourite MCU film.
Yeah... For first watches, ALWAYS go in release order for movies, whatever anyone says. This goes for any film or series, EVER. You'll save yourself a ton of headaches. After, you can rewatch in any order you choose...
release is better watch imo than "timeline." I feel it's the way the creators intended and how the audience experienced it.
Important thing to remember: the comic book superhero genre was created in what we now call the Golden Age of comics by artists and writers who were mostly the sons of immigrants, and most of those were Jewish people who were struggling to process what was going on in Germany at the time.
That's why Golden Age Superman fought anything in America that looked like Nazis, from the KKK to government officials who got too cozy with wealthy industrialists. That's why the first issue of Captain America featured the title character punching Hitler on the front cover.
No matter what other people tell you, comic books were always "woke."
That's another fine reaction to another fine movie! Sorry I got to it so late...
I especially liked this from you:
"In another lifetime, they would have been an amazing couple, and probably would have lasted forever and ever and ever..."
I hear you, Kay. For some reason, I think you're absolutely right.
The fact that you directly recognized and appreciated Sebastian Stan gave you a direct bonus point. ❤
The "scientific charge up sound", of the Hydra guns, and Iron Man's repulsors, is actually the sound made by the flashbulb on a 35mm film camera, circa mid 1980s., as it charged up.
that’s so cool!! 🫢
Awesome reaction! Look forward to more! You're energy is great ☺️
Thank you so much!! 🥺
The First Avenger was technically the very first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe according to the timeline.
not really

8:31 "No, no. Wait. Wait. What am I doing? No. You have _procedure,_ tomorrow. No fluids."
"All right. We'll drink it after."
"Imagine if he _did_ drink that little thing of alcohol, though. What would've happened?"
Well, Dr. Erskine said that whatever qualities are already present are _amplified._ So if Steve goes in _drunk,_ that suggests to me that he would come out... a lot _more_ drunk.
21:31 "But _vhy_ do you vant the targets written in _English?_ Ve are _Juhman."_

@1:34 YES that most definitely IS Mr. Filch from the Harry Potter series.. (fun fact:Kenneth Brannagh, the actor who played Professor Lockhart from The Chamber of Secrets, directed the 1st Thor movie)
NO WAYYY!!! Lockhart is so goofy. I’m glad to hear he directed Thor :) I’m most excited to watch that one and see how it turned out
he's Red Skull, the first supersoldier and the evil one!
The reason you can't drink fluids before the procedure is so that you don't vomit and aspirate the fluids into your lungs... it's bad when vomit gets in the lungs.
This one was a really difficult one to pull off because of the need to ground the origins of the character and his personality in the WW2 era. Cap being frozen in ice and then pulled into the future is somewhat essential to his character and helps to set him apart of other heroes that have either have a very modern feel to them or a I've always been around feel. One day I'd really like to see a deeper exploration into what Steve Rogers goes through in adapting to a new world and culture when he's not in combat/superhero mode. I'd imagine he might still feel incredibly alone even in a crowded room because he's missed out on so much. Would he prefer the company of senior citizens who are more closely connected to the time grew up in?
We actually have flying “cars” now, it’s just the logistical and air traffic nightmare it would create.
Your hall monitor from HP is also a main from GoT (best show ever in my opinion). The more you know lol
Goodness. That outfit makes you look like a _receptionist._
I forgot how they explained the serum in this movie
*spoiler for phase 4*
"bad becomes worse" is the reason why that replacement guy from falcon and winter soldier becomes an a**hole and stains the shield with blood
good reaction but don't forget the post credits at the end of each marvel it's like a marvel tradition to know which movies to watch
You asked about him soft landing the ship and bailing. A deleted scene from a future MCU film had a comical moment where he is asked why he didn't do just that and he freezes like it's an obvious option that just simply never occurred to him. I'm not giving spoilers. Like I said, it was deleted so it doesn't exist, but it was their nod to what crossed everybody's mind as they watched.
Keep having fun.
that’s hilarious 😭 it’d be cool to see that but it also makes sense as to why they ended up deleting it. thank you for the comment!
I truly appreciate your matter-of-fact acceptance that deleted scenes "don't exist." I've heard too many people argue for various things based on sources other than the actual films and it drives me batty. 🦇🦇🦇
+1 for pausing the video when telling some thoughts that take more than a second. and the reaction of course.
Steve Rogers is kind of a goodie two-shoes. It is super difficult to make that kind of character interesting. DC has been struggling to produce a decent Superman series Christopher Reeves in the 70s.
The 107th is a fictional unit from a popular WW2 comic Marvel had called the Howling Commandos. Dum-Dum Dugan (the guy with red hair, handlebar mustache, and the bowler hat) is probably the most famous. The African-American is implied to be the father of Nick Fury.
"What made you so special?"
"Nothing. I'm just a kid from Brooklyn."
This is a core concept in comic books. The villains believe that the world owes them power because they are special. The heroes are constantly trying to prove that they deserve the power that they have.
The reaction from the actress playing agent Carter wasn't scripted. When Steve first steps out of the chamber that was her first time seeing him without a shirt
Your dressed like a Scientist and you SOUND like some exacting scientist

thank you!! i pause them to make sure i don’t accidentally talk over important lines. also, on youtube, i can only play scenes for a certain amount of time before i get copyright strikes
kay, have you watched the inHumans tv show, or Agents of SHIELD, do you know who the KREE are? their blood is blue and they use it make Terrigen crystals to give lowly humans super powers, turning them into inHumans
so i think the syrum is actually Kree blood , making Captain America , an inHuman
I subscribed based on how confident you are, Kay. That, and joining in on the ground level means I get to claim loyalty later on. 😉 My comments are always like this. Timestamped and lengthy. Brace yourself.
4:35 - Used to pass the Unisphere (that globe sculpture) all the time when I was a kid. Stayed up for decades after the World's Fair in 1964... which is a problem, considering this movie is taking place mostly during WW II. Whoopsie! 😁
4:43 - Yes, Howard Stark is Tony's father.
5:11 - Stanley Tucci played the role of Dr. Erskine to perfection.
6:49 - I love that they made her a "take ono crap" kind of lady. ♥
7:16 - Work smarter, not harder. 😉
10:26 - As per IMDb: Hayley Atwell surprisingly touching Chris Evans' chest as he emerged from the pod upon turning into Captain America was very much improvised, and the surprise on her face is genuine, as she admitted in interviews she was very taken by Chris' physique and nearly broke character and ruined the take that made it into the film as a result.
12:02 - Yes, he pulled a fake tooth out and bit down on it. Probably potassium cyanide.
13:26 - "Star Spangled Man" is the exact kind of American propaganda you could expect in the 40's during the war, and it makes for a fun song to go with the montage. 🙂 Also, the sale of war bonds was how they financed the war, so at this point in the story they're using Steve as a mascot to increase sales. And it works, as revealed in dialog along the way.
23:45 - You haven't seen a lot of Marvel movies at all, have you? *TIP!* Watch them in release order to get the proper experience that the rest of us did. If you watch in what people think is chronological order, you'll spoil or confuse story points.
Oh, yeah. I almost forgot. You're a very pretty young woman. 🙂 (Okay, I didn't forget. I just refused to make that the first thing I said. It might make you think I'm subscribing just to ogle you. No, I subscribe to people with whom I can have fun sharing a movie/TV experience. That's how it works. 😉)
This comment gave me a huge smile! Thank you so much for the sub and for the fun facts. Hayley’s improvised scene for Chris shirtless is so hilarious. I love that it’s her genuine reaction haha! Also I am planning on watching the Marvel movies in release order now! This movie was recommended to me and it made me think that I should watch the movies in timeline order (and I’m glad I didn’t continue that way because I now know that it’s definitely not the best way to proceed). Thanks so much again, I hope to see you in the upcoming vids!
This was a fundamental change of the character of Captain America and his relationships with people but it is from the Marvel Ultimates comics timeline and it does flow easier for the modern audience and I really mean younger audience because we are well out of the WWII and post war generation of comics. All of the Capt. America movies are probably my favorite because they fall more on a realistic slant and deal with more social and personal political commentary. That stays faithful to the original Capt. America story. To me the stories are true to the essence of what was Marvel. Times and comics have changed but the world situation has changed and this new Capt. America brings that old time hero up to date with the modern age.
his father!
Don’t forget to watch Incredible Hulk movie it’s part of the MCU to
I got the chance to watch the incredible Hulk for the first time last year when it used to be on HBO Max, and I noticed a few “familiar” elements like the Sonic Cannons came from Stark Industries, SHIELD, and the one and only Genius, Billionaire, playboy, philanthropist Tony Stark in the final scene where he meets with Ross at a bar.

Originally HYDRA was meant to be Marvels version of the Nazi Party, and Red Skull was supposed to be Marvels version of Hitler. But then the younger generation of writers realized that was fucking STUPID- so they decided that Hitler/Nazis SHOULD exist, and retconned Hydra to be a division of Nazis that went Rogue because they believed Hitlers “final solution” was too soft- that ALL of humanity needed to be “purified” not just ONE group of people.
Basically they were too extreme, even for Hitler! 😂
The Nazis were the lesser of two evils…imagine that!🤣

You know, if you think about this too much, you get to the conclusion that Steve's effors to enlist were selfish. He wasn't trying to go into the position in which he could do the most good. He went to the most prestigious (for the lack of a better word) position he could think of.
It's kind of a slap on Rivet Rose's face.
Ah yes, prestigious as of riskiest?
@@heisenberg2640 We can agree that that's not a factor where Steve is concerned?
Yes, jumping on a grenade to save lives is one of the most selfish things a man can do. I am, of course, being very sarcastic here. I'm not a huge fan of CA from the comics but the concept is straight forward. With a proper mindset, hope, and inspiration, we can all do our part to take a stand and make a better world.
Steve was chosen for experimentation due to his proper mindset of wanting to do his part. Steve's "selfishness" did not come into play until Disney's agenda retcons slowly chipped away at the foundations (built by Marvel Studios before their 2009 sale to Disney).
Stan Lee's vision was telling good superhero stories promoting hope and inspiration while respecting all characters in the process. This story telling spirit has been distorted and crushed into horrible cheap propaganda by Disney. Stories & Characters are no longer respected. By the end of MCU phase 3 this propaganda becomes very blatant.

You stated -- "You know, if you think about this too much, you get to the conclusion that Steve's effors to enlist were selfish. "
Then you altered your own statement with -- "I'm not denying that SteveRogers was brave, intelligent or even selfless. "
Your first statement was blatant about Steve's selfishness. It's difficult to know your point when you alter that point without even calling it a correction. You can't have it both ways here.
Addressing your altered comment:
Steve first had to successfully enlist in the military before that military can determine where they get the best use out of him.
Your argument sounds like you are questioning Steve's morality for not being Howard Stark or Dr. Erskine.
Obviously Doctor Erskine had already determined what division Steve would go to. Steve was anything but sub-par for Dr. Erskine's needs.
As for Steve's personal motivations to enlist - it is indoctrinated thinking to feel that Steve should leave it for others to do rather than try his personal best to assist in the war effort.
My Point:
This is the inspiration ideology that pre-Disney Marvel presents. Everyone can be a hero if they have a good heart and the proper mindset. It's a contagious ideology and can make a better world.
-- Do you just sit there and expect others to carry you around in life (indoctrinated groupthink ideology - also contagious)
