Alkali Glass Corrosion - Permanent Hazing Damage!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- While very uncommon, it is possible for a glass pane on your aquarium to develop a permanent haze appearance as a result of alkali glass corrosion. What is alkali glass corrosion? It is a reaction that happens in glass that has absorbed some contaminants in the presence of high pH (like our aquariums!).

I had this happen to my Innovative Marine tank. Will never buy from them again
god dang i wish I read this before i placed an order for a 200 ext ... how long did it take? did they say anything? warranty?
This is happening to my 4 month old Innovative Marine 200ext. Did they replace yours? I contacted them and they wanted me to send videos which I sent and they are reviewing.
I used to work in a stamping plant where we had to polish some tooling to a mirror finish with diamond paste and I can't help but wonder if the hazed glass couldn't be polished to remove the haze, maybe even polishing out the zinc contamination. I doubt you could find an abrasive that was reef safe to do it while the tank was in use (though maybe it exists), but might be cheaper than replacing the pane.
New fear unlocked 😂 Great information than! Ive never seen this happen before
How unfortunate for your friend. I did not know this was even a thing. Awesome video and happy reefing.
So sad
Thank you so much for this video, I’ve been looking everywhere for videos and answers online on this topic! As my custom aquarium is being build at the moment this couldn’t have come at a better time! This happened to my old tank it was awful!
It is a super uncommon issue but it does happen clearly.
Fingers crossed that no more panes of glass develop this kind of hazing!
Edit: I am surprised so many others have had this issue as well in their tanks :/
I wonder if buffing could repair this. You would need something harder than typical aluminum oxide sandpaper, perhaps jewelers rouge. But it may be possible.
@@deadbrother5355 It may be possible, but if the process already involved draining and drying the tank, it might just be easier to cut the pane out and replacing it.
@@tidalgardens true that. Im a fixer by nature, so my brain went there.
Than, thank you so much for bringing this point up. I had a tank with this issue and no one was able to give me a clear explanation as to what happened. For me, it happened with a non custom tank.
Glad it helped
Had no idea...thank you!!!
Finally, an answer to my issue! I have a side pane on my 200g that has this. The hazing isn't completely uniform across the surface and seems somewhat blotchy, but is definitely permanent. That tank has been running for 8 years and it's not intolerable, but it's certainly annoying when passing by that side.
This was very interesting find. I wonder if aquarium builders would warranty for this issue happening.
It may depend on the manufacturer, but my guess is no.
@Glasscages warranty their tanks for one year that I'm aware of.
Yes they do, though unfortunately these types of hazing issues don’t really start appearing or becoming noticeable until after the tank has been up and running for 2 or 3 years, and by then the warranty has expired.
Have never once heard of this in all my years with aquariums. Crazy. Thanks Than!
Super rare, but it is worth knowing about.
Same. Never heard.
My tank has it. Ugh
Just started to DIY a tank. Never heard of this but will now use this information. Thanks
Fianlly a reason. Thankyou. The tank has now become a cooler water freshwater tank.
This information is gold. But some comments are causing confusion about whuv side should be out and in.
Just to be sure tin side out?
Excellent video, I'd never heard of this before. Unfortunately I have ten 7 footers sat waiting to be filled up will water in a couple of months time that I've already drilled & painted the non viewing sides on so I can only keep all of my fingers & toes crossed that all of their viewing panes are the right way around 🤞🤞🤞
Wow, thanks for bringing this to light for me in the process of getting a custom tank built, will definitely be asking the question now lol.
The more u know 😂
Outch . Never heard of that before . Thanks Stan the Man !
Thanks for the heads up!!!
i love these videos. one day ill have my own tank
Thank Than for this video! Now a video on how we can remove this etching please.
Very interesting, thank you
Thank you Than!
Welcome!
My Red Sea 350 G2 was just replaced because of similar issue, front glass it got very hazy but also had perfectly horizontal lines on the glass that got more obvious with the haze. I did not want to tear down my system so the new tank Red Sea sent sat in my garage and over time the glass got better somehow
has happend to me in a inovative marine nuvo 10 one side was just like that... i tryied everything coulden fix it..
Sorry to hear that.
Just bought a used Innovative Marine 50G Lagoon and it’s on the front panel! FML! 😢
Great video. Found it suler informative. Seems like we are learning so much in this hobby but yet feel like we still dont know alot about things. I feel like we're in a great time of discovery. Cant wait to see what we "know" in another 10 years. Lol
Glad it was helpful!
I mean thats why you don't store alkaline solutions in glasbottles, but i'm kind of doubtfull that the typical pH of saltwater (8,5) is able to do this to a tank .
But i'm open to beeing proven wrong.
My old Cadlights 50g cube had this happen on all 3 visible panes. There was a perfect ring of clear where my MP40 sat on the one side. Once it happens, it sucks and completely ruins the experience. I tried buffing it with a ton of different things but it never came off.
Wow! Thanks!
Welcome!
I'd check out Glasscages, I myself wouldn't have any other builder do my tanks. Their standards are out of this world.
It's funny because this is on my 100g on only the sides. You actually can buff it out with cerium oxide but it's a pain ans will just co tenure to happen unless you flip the whole pain. I didn't even realize it was just a one side of the glass thing. I thought it was just lower quality glass for the sides.
this happened to me on my jbj 45. I upgraded to a reds 300xl due to it
It happened to my JBJ 45 as well. I'll never buy another JBJ.
THAN you just scare me cause my new tank from glas has this haze on it and I just thought it may be just because it was settling but it's been almost three weeks and still looks hazy.
that is really unfortunate, I have been in the hobby for 6 years, and am now just learning this😟
Totally uncommon event but it does happen :(
Shouldn’t the tin side face in, and the air side facing out?!
Tin side should face out b/c there are fine scratches in it. They get filled in.
The air side facing the water has a smoother surface
Why wouldn't this issue be covered under warranty?
They are short and typically not good.
Have you tried polishing the glass? I had a company come out and polish out a scratch in my glass tank with great results. Plus, I have heard of it being done without draining the entire tank.
I have never seen glass get polished before. How does it work without the water being drained? I would have thought it needed some kind of abrasive that would get everywhere?
@@tidalgardens I used a company that does glass repair on high rise buildings as well as auto glass. While he was doing mine(empty at the time) I asked if he had done other tanks. He mentioned a few and said he did one with the tank stocked. The polishing process is essentially just sanding the glass down which can be done with the water in since glass is inert. The final stage of actual polish needs the water drained but he said they laid wet towels on the corals and rocks while being polished. For a whole panel Im not sure though. But even just for simple scratch repair its a great option. I would absolutely consult someone in the field but that 1000 gallon may be savable.
I think to say I'd be less than thrilled is comically understating the level of annoyance factor to fixing that problem...at least its not on a show tank (such a shame)
👍👍👍
That yellow tang in that tank is so fat and happy!
I would be 🤬🤬
That’s a good way to lose good customers
Why you talk about "Frost's shower door"? D:
There is another way to permenantly fog a pain of glass..... Spray wood cleaner near it. Seeps into glass immediately and fogs it. Be careful with wood work nearby. And if you have someone who cleans your house and uses those types of products.
I have not heard that before. That would be very frustrating to find out.
@@tidalgardens yup. Not sure if it's a specific type or brand but it'll completely jack up glass.
acrylic? 🤷🏽♂️
Sad. Whoever manufactured that 1000 gallon tank should have the integrity to fix it and offer their personal service of helping to break down that tank to make it right. That is either ignorance or incompetence at play. It would drive me absolutely insane until that was repaired.
I think this type of damage if it occurs at all happens long after the tank warranty runs out. You’d be surprised how short and limited in scope custom tank guaranties are.
@@tidalgardens like I said if that builder had a shred of decency about them. Not trying to be a smart @$$. I just think that is pitiful. Thus is clearly the builder’s negligence. Warranty or not. I understand your comment though. Thanks for the reply.
Dont haze me Than!
no promises!
This has been the worst experience of my 25 years of Reefkeeping. Great video Than!
Sorry bro :(
Can not imagine...
Damn Ryan, that really sucks. Big silver lining is that your tank is one of the nicest ones on UA-cam regardless though, with or without hazing she's an absolute stunner.
Never thought I could feel sorry for YOU, what with you having everyone's dream tank, and the best reef in Texas, but...dang it all, if you start a gofundme, I'll contribute!
@@jdamommio thanks for the sentiment. Problem is the only way to fix it is a complete tear down. Kinda takes the wind out of the sails.
Was that tank done by a savvy reef aquarium maker? 🤔
This appears to be happening to my Innovative Marine 200ext. It’s only been setup for a few months with water with no lights. Moved my livestock from my old tank into this past weekend and noticed it. All three viewable panes have it.
Wow. Neat. So sad about Ryan’s tank, though. I wonder if there is a similar reaction going on for those that use lanthanum chloride and experience the cloudiness on their glass.
My tank is pretty old I have a blue hippo Tang that's been in there 17 years also a yellow tang that's going on 10 years old I never have had this hazing problem but some of the scratches inside the tank gets filled with algae that can be a pain to get out of the cracks other than that never really had a problem with hazing
Tin side detector 😢
Interesting
thank goodness my tank doesn't do that.
It is very uncommon but based on some of the other comments it seems to happen more than I thought.
I think I would cry… custom tanks aren’t cheap and a lot of work to install. I feel bad for your tank too, but your friend with that big beautiful in-wall display… yikes.
He was not that thrilled about it happening.
That is crazy! Can't imagine how he feels. I'd be feeling every type of emotion that exists!
Super interesting
Thanks for watching
Cant imagine that happening to the 1k g tank my heart goes out to him
Holy crap! Thank you for bringing this to our attention!
OMG this is so terrifying, I'm sure no one wants to go through this. Some one said it right in reefing disaster can come from any direction a hobby definitely not for faint hearted. Thanks for the info
schooled...
Interesting info! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Than isn’t it the opposite , the air side should be outside and the tin inside the tank?
You just said air twice
@@andymingni sorry .. I mean air outside than tin inside
Now I’m confused! Is the tin side supposed to be inside ore the air side in?
Acrylic >>>>>
Today, I learned. Thanks Than!
Any time!
