Dan is a great interviewer. Good luck you two. You have made the right decision. I retired early at 54 years of age and living in Southern Thailand for almost 7 years now. Je ne regrette rien.
The funny thing is people argue what about leaving your friends and family. I've found that I don't have time to enjoy friends and family as I'm always working to make money to support my life here so when I do move my family will understand and I don't really have many friends. Also you only get one time around so you'd better enjoy it while you can.
Your channel convinced me to spend two months in Malaysia next year instead of one : Penang, Kualu Lumpur, Malacca, Desaru, and Kuching. Looking forward to meeting the hospitable Malaysian people. And I'll be writing a book there.
Thank you for this inspiring interview. I do too love to travel. Started last year and cried when I had to return back to America. Don't get me wrong, I love this country, but I love to travel and discover way more.

Thanks so much Dan for your thoughtful and insightful interviews. I am going on a year long slow travel thru SE Asia and we (me and hubby)are looking at to set up a home base. We are looking to retire outside of the US due to affordability. We plan to visit visit Bali, Lombok, Philippines', Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia and hope we will find somewhere to settle. We are 56 and 59 and LOVE to travel. We own a successful property management business in the US.
They mention in the video that this condo would go for #=$10k month in Vancouver BC Colombia. So they feel like they are stepping up in life staying here. The condo we stayed in was much cheaper. Stay tuned for that report.
It may seem kinda weird to got to another country and hang out with other expats but the diversity of people you meet from other countries is amazing. Yes, meet and interact with the locals but there is no reason to not also meet other expats.
I love their enthusiasm for exploring the world. Too often people criticize expats for abandoning their country. We are not . . . we are just moving on to new and interesting experiences in other countries.
Good question. I assumed they purged everything they couldn't travel with and gave heirlooms to their kids or family members. It would be interesting to find out.
Awe, the curiosity…I love talking about our journey because I believe others can do it too. I would love to share. It started with the decision to retire early, then travel, and in between was a lot of soul searching, learning about dealing with clutter. Dealing with clutter is a huge story if anyone is interested. Either way we are at a place now where we are feeling really good about our choices. ❤ And in case anyone else reads this, no matter where you are life has its ups and downs, it is how you handle those that makes or breaks your day ❤
It's nice to see the couple is happy there , but the implication they live on $ 1500/ month is false. They stated in interview rent was 1800 and 400 insurance which doesn't add up. And these two figures are just beginning expenses.
That is right. Their rent5 is $1500 USD ($1800 Canadian) for a place that would cost about $10k in Vancouver BC. That is what they are talking about in this video.
@@VagabondAwake I like the channel and the video. Everyone has a different budget so you could spend triple that and still be a bargain for you. I digress and it makes me sound like a grumpy git.... I guess I would have just liked to have seen their eternal optimism tempered with a bit of reality, such as bureaucracy or that life just has to be taken slower, not bad things, but more real things.....otherwise it just sounds like they are visiting a "Disneyland".... and it was good to see Dan trying to encourage this in the conversation, but sadly not getting very far and just getting back "its amazing... I smile at someone and they all love me and want to speak English blah blah blah"
I agree with you Ian that life is not “Disneyland.” The year prior to arriving here in Penang was filled with so many challenges that the slower pace here feels to be such a relief. We can’t speak to the bureaucracy here as we have not had to engage with it. In place of the phrase, “its amazing..” perhaps, no boss, no schedule, no snow, and short pants every day :-)
