Thanks Qiang & Dan. What an absolutely stunning place. Definitely adding Sabah to my list of retirement destinations. All the foods you ate looked healthy and delicious not to mention the very reasonable prices. Excellent of you to search out places that are slightly off the radar compared to the traditional countries like Thailand and The Philippines (not that there's anything wrong with those :-)

    Dan and Qiang,
    Thank you for your content!
Since most of us potentially looking to retire overseas have no familiarity with the places you are exploring (including this beautiful location), may I just offer a minor suggestion: The cost of housing is obviously the biggest ticket item on ones monthly expenses. If you were to show a ‘city map’ of the downtown area and highlight a sample apartment building/complex within walking distance say to the shops/cafes/restaurants/malls/grocery stores etc.. and perhaps do a video tour of a decent (1) bedroom/(1) bath unit, it would be helpful. It gives a baseline. Obviously you don’t have to do several units, you could just say, expect to pay $100/month less further from the city center or $100-200/month more for a (2) bedroom etc. Maybe from your experience, with wide fluctuations in pricing, you don’t want to present information that is not accurate, but it would be nice to have a baseline and see what kind of unit is $300/month and how far from everything that unit is. Thanks again! Happy travels.

@@VagabondAwake you are welcome! Just to give you an idea of what I’m saying. I recently came across ‘Live before you die’ YT channel. He had a tour of his $280 apartment in Pattaya Thailand. The views and amenities are off the chart. This YT channel does not have a huge following, but the ‘views’ on this particular video were great. Most people were blown away by what you could get. Of course, people will still ask ‘what about a (1) or (2) bedroom?’…..but when you see it, you realize ‘I can do this’. If not in this unit, somewhere near by. We know food is cheap and you do a great job itemizing the other monthly expenses. Housing is key!!! With this unit, you could see the ocean, so it looked like a luxury unit, in a nice building, so I don’t have a lot of questions about ‘is it a safe part of town’ or where is the nearest market. Even if it is a 5-10 min transportation ride to the center, it is ‘doable’. Thank you for all your hard work in bringing this content to the masses. 👍

I've watched a lot of your videos and I think I got this advice from you(maybe I just formed it). Anyway I really like the idea of always renting, staying nimble and free of possessions, you can't lose what you don't commit. So don't commit and if it goes south just move on. Also like you I'm not into Visa runs or getting around rules, if they want to limit me to 3 months or whatever, then I'll move along.

I'm a native Sabahan and I spent 50% of my live in Sabah and Canada. I will retire in Malaysia in two year's time. Your estimates on the cost of living is about right. RM4,500 to RM5,000 would be about the right sum. I would buy a car to move around as public transport is not reliable and Grab is your next best bet. Rental is your most expensive item I would say. Depending where or how you want to live can drive up your cost. Good job.

For the MM2H visa, can the income of both husband and wife be combined to meet eligibility requirements for both of them to acquire the MM2H visa. Say for example, if the income requirement is 9K USD per month, can we combine income from husband say 5K and wife 4K to show this total amount, or one person should have the entire income in their name and this amount needs to be deposited into one bank account? Hoping if the new MM2H that is expected to be announced in 2024 could come with lower income requirements and combining to meet income requirements could become a possibility at that time. Thanks.

What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/
Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/
By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan
