How to Make a Ping Pong Table by Jon Peters

- www.jonpeters.com/ I was going to buy a ping-pong table, but then I decided to build one on my own.
I used two sheets of 1/2 Baltic birch plywood for the table because its sold in 5ft x 5ft sheets and ping pong tables measure 5ft x 9ft.
Baltic birch plywood will be a special order from most lumber yards, and it shouldn't take more than 3 days to arrive, see if the lumber yard will cross cut it, if yes then get it cross cut. After the plywood is cut, you're basically done, but I do a little more work to make it nicer looking and sturdier. I use 1 x 2 pieces of poplar wood to help brace the table and prevent warping. Measure and mark where you need to drill holes, and then pre drill the holes with a counter synch bit. Use 1-¼ inch screws to attach the 1 x 2's to the table. To fill the holes on the tabletop, I use a special bit in my drill press. The wood is mahogany. Once done hammer them into the holes with glue. when the glue dries, saw off the tops of the plugs with a pull saw.
Once the tables are sanded, they are ready for a finish
I use a blue paint for boundary lines
I use 3 coats of water born polyurethane on the top of the table, and I sanded after each coat. Now attach the two halves of the table together using a piano hinge - Навчання та стиль

Made a few changes and additions...
Stained it dark walnut to see ball better...
Made the fold direction opposite to protect table surfaces while in storage...
Built a door w/ hinges to fit around some the the support beams underneath to store net, and paddles...
Used 1.5" PVC to make a spring loaded ball holder/dispenser along each players side under the playing surface...
Added corner brackets on plywood to protect table corners while moving/playing
Added a clip on each side to hold it together when it is folded and being moved

Thanks for this! The Baltic birch tip was huge! most stores dont think there is anything but 4x 8 plywood. We are making this for our cabin so making it out of wood is really ideal!!

I had thought about buying or building a ping pong table, but knew that we couldn't fit/store it in our apartment. Then I watched your video, and when I saw how you were able to fold it in half using a piano hinge, I thought it was brilliant! I wish I could post a picture of the one I made because it came out awesome - fire truck red with white stripe lines. Ping pong nights at our house have become a regular thing for our family and friends - thanks so much for making this video, I couldn't have done it without you!

That is the coolest ping pong table i have seen even compared to the expensive Stiga ones i have seen. I've been playing ping pong off and on since the summer of 85-86'. I have a basic folding one i got at Walmart. I am not a handy wood worker or artistic but I like your channel(found it because the skateboard project) and so will my wife so i am going to sub. I made a similar table to this. Using the Baltic Birch and an old Stiga frame I had. The table collapses and everything! Awesome project
Neither the lumbar stores nor the big box stores here (Atlanta, GA) sell 5ft x 5ft sheets of 1/2" Baltic Birch. When I visited, the big box stores (The Home Depot and Lowes) have 4ft x 8ft sheets of 1/2" Birch. When I called, specialty Lumbar yards have Baltic Birch in 4ft x 8ft sheets of 1/2" thickness.
I plan on building a table/top like this for outdoor use. excellent guide.
I used Masonite instead with a smooth low friction coating. Besides the different wood i basically did the same thing you did and my table works great. So thanks for an easy video :D

Great video. I think you could use the piano hinge on the top side (under the net) to allow one to fold the table 90 degrees to play against a backboard. Just need a way to hold up the vertical panel. This would also help to protect the paint job on the top face.

I used two finished 4 * 8 ft particle board (3/4 inch in thickness) from Home Depo, asked Home Depo to cut them into two 4 * 5 ft and two 1 * 3 ft line up as one 1 * 6 ft for center pieces that with 3/5 inch cut wood joints each side to raise a piece of microfiber as the net. So in short, 4 + 1 + 4 = 9 ft is table length and the 5 ft is the table width for the baselines each side.
The net poles are two 3 * 9 inches from the rest of the unused board. Similar 3/4 inch cut wood joints as the base hooking up with the cut wood joints on the 1 * 6 ft center piece each side. I used paper stables every inch along top and bottom to sew the microfiber into tubes so the net strings through the tubes holding the microfiber net straight.
Table height standard is 31 inches. I bought four 2 * 4 ft and then cut them into 31 - 3/4 = 30.25 inches as the legs for raising the table. Two 8 ft 2 * 4 lumber wood mounts on those 30.25 inches wide V shape legs as the vertical support horizontally along the table length with appropriate cut wood joints as well so the whole thing can be assembled/disassembled easily.

What type of blue paint did you use for the boundary lines? Also, do you know where I can get folding legs solely for the corners of the table rather than saw horses, or would I have to develop my own?

No it doesn't unfortunately, it bounces like an overweight cheap downtown hooker.

I am looking to make a mini for my nieces, John, and I was wondering if the birch laminate gave you any dead spots on the table. If there's a tiny pocket somewhere with no glue, it could deaden the bounce.

Thanks for posting this! We'd love to make a table that can be used outdoors. My understanding is that weather changes can warp "indoor tables," and wonder whether you have ideas about reinforcing this design, if you think it would be needed.

John what kind of chemical did you use to somewhat "laminate" the plywood to make it smooth and glossy? And will regular plywood suffice?

I would make the top removable and leave in my shed when not using. The legs I can leave outside with the other tables I've built.

oh, and another thing. If you're not a serious player and just making a table for fun then it doesn't really matter. I play competitive table tennis and most high end tables have a low friction coating.

Are you confident about this for outdoor use? Or are you doing anything additional to safeguard from warping? (e.g. incorporate metal and/or seal in some way?)

Ping Pong tables have to have a matte color, and not so shiny and smooth. The ball would not bounce right.
Cheaper to just buy one.
Muntecy, you are right. It would be like making a car at a machine shop and by the time you are done, you are in several hundred thousand. It makes no sense unless you are bored and have nothing else to do. Baltic birch plywood is not cheap and overall has an environmental cost well above a purchased table.
