  • What Severne Wave sail fits best for which type of riding?
Both the Severne Blade & S-1 have been in the range from Severne from the very start of the brand now more than 20 years ago.
It has always been a hot topic on which of the 2 sails is the best & which type of sailor fits best with which model.
I had the chance to try both the S-1 4.8 & the Blade 4.7 back to back in Cabezo. And although conditions where not ideal I got a pretty good feel for both sails to help you get a better idea of the differences between both.
I start off by looking at the sails at land, checking the specs before I take them to the water for a 15 - 20 min run on each to give you a first impression feedback.
Let me know in the comment below what you are riding & if you have any follow up questions I can try in potential future sessions!
Full details on the sails can be found below:

Hello, i´m not a Severne customer, but i like how you describe the different sails, because also many other sailmakers have the same categories of sails like Severne has. That gives you a good run down how sails in general work.

Thank you! Most sail brands have 2 wave sails at least in there range some even more. When in doubt I would always write the brand itself or even better go to a test center and like me test both options back to back before buying.

Glad to hear you have enjoyed the clip & are enjoying the Severne products! The Blade definitely is a great all rounder with a huge wind range!

Hi Dieter, as always very well explained. As a happy owner of Blade your comparison is extremely useful. I look forward to see board comparison ...

Hello Sveto, thank you! Board comparison on Wave boards or other idea's?

Great detail! interesting how you could really see in the clips that you look "undergunned" in the bottom turns with the Blade compared to the S1! Might need to give my quiver a shake up during my next gear update...

Yes I think for you on the lighter wind days in Le Dossen a S-1 could fit a bit better on the stronger wind days you might not need that extra drive especially in Side of so could still be happy on the Blade. Especially if wind is going up & down a lot.. Might need to get you one to try next time I'm around!

This is a bit confusing. I always thought the pressure point of the blade is lower and more to the front. Also pushing down on the board when fully powered to get more control. It would also put more drive on the board. The S1 would have a higher, more to the back pressure point, making it feel lighter and more snappy. So pulling you iup in jumps more easily and rotating (looping) more easily because of the higher pressure point. Making it a bit more nervous, but also more light in the hands. So that is pretty different from what you just explained. Not sure what to make of it 😅

Very good points. Would like to hear the experts on these your points, because I also thought like that 🤔

Hello Vincent, this clip is filled with my own experience and what I could clearly feel when sailing the 2 sails back to back. On the fact of the pressure point towards front or back we seem to be align. Wether it's higher or lower between the 2 sails we seems to be on opposite sides in our experience. From my experience sailing the 2 sails back to back I felt for me the pressure point was lower & further back on the S-1 compared to the Blade yet the most clear thing that indicated that for me was the fact I had quite a bit more drive in the bottom turn on the S-1 compared to the Blade while it also had more grip in the top turn. On forwards for example on the Blade I get an easier better rotation, similar to when I sail my Freestyle sails (the Freek) which indicates for me it should be higher up, Forwards on the S-1 for example I find less easy, backloops are bit easier on the landing since the top can open up better but in general I would say the Blade is more stable in the air. The stability when getting powered up on the Blade I personally would say would come from the 5 batten lay out (more wind range) & more high aspect ratio however I have only tried the 4.7 & normally only sail S-1 so touch bias towards S-1. I hope to give the Blade another go in Pozo & give some further feedback in stronger winds due to the conditions on this day being a bit tricky. What are you riding yourself? And what is the last S-1 you have tried just out of curiosity ? Hopefully I didn't confuse you too much.

Thanks Dieter, I mostly ride Blade.. Added an S1 5.0 last year.. But it's a bit too twitchy for me. I prefer the more solid feeling of the Blade. But maybe it's setup and size will have different impact too. That said, both sails are awesome. Thanks for further clarifying. I should test the same size back to back one day. Just for the fun of it. Maybe some day at a test center somewhere 😄🤙🏻

@@VincentVelema i use both sails for years, and just wanna verify that S1 is indeed way more twitchy, even when you are just going.. . Usually i see the differences in the gusts, rather than the tricks. If i just go with the blade i have really good control in gusts, but a hard time to move the sail into my movement, lets say like a lay down on a turn or wave, while with S1 in identical condition it would be twitchy, but in a wave ride, it would feel so light and responsive to the point like its cheating.

Yes so twitchy is not bad it's just more eager to move around 😄 to each's preference 👍🏻 both sails are 🥰

I have Blades for all except 5,0 which in my case I feel like if it suits better for lighter winds

which one do you think is more suitable for freestyle?

    • @dietervandereyken9271
      @dietervandereyken9271  Місяць тому +2

For sure the Blade would be more suitable, if you put a bit less downhaul , let tension of the lower 2 battens (the one around the main window) & tension top ones good to make it duck better. The S-1 for ducking is quite hard, I can do it but with the stability the Blade has & its on & off feeling the Blade will be better towards Freestyle
