Neuroscience and psychology have a lot in common. But where does one begin and the other end? What are the differences? And how did we end up with these two different-yet-overlapping fields? It turns out that the history of brain science is diverse and winding, with roots going back to some of the earliest philosophers. In this video, both of us (Alie and Micah) will give you a very brief history of brain science, tell you exactly when psychology and neuroscience diverged from one another, and maybe more importantly, reveal how they still intersect.

As a philosophy and now also neuroscience student and history of science enthusiast this has all I would've ask to be in a perfect video.

I live in a university town in Sweden and one way the students, and others, get “test subjects” is by offering money, if it concerns medical studies where the subject gets something extracted or injected to their body or if it’s something that the subject have to do over a longer period of time. Almost everyone else in other studies gets offered movie tickets, through cooperation with the university and the largest movie theatre chain in the country. Most who apply are still young people, most of them white. Unless the students, or other, actively search for other subjects, which takes more time.
Interesting topic! I'm really interested in multidisciplinary approaches to psychology - integrating neuroscience and biology to understand ourselves a bit more :) theres some really interesting research looking at the microbiome and how that may be linked to depression and anxiety
The difference between neuroscience and psychology looks analogous to the physics-chemistry divide. The analogy breaks at the mind/soul mystery.

Very interesting video! I did a whole playlist of videos on the history of Neuroscience but you guys summed it up in one video! PS: I'm really enjoying reading your book!
I was just thinking about this topic recently. Great Work! But there was no mention of trepanation, the first surgical practice used since ancient times to treat traumatic brain injury, headaches, epilepsy, and mental disorders. The fact that trepanning was common in primitive society to treat behavioral disorders (spiritual possessions, as they called them) is evidence that people knew that somehow the brain was responsible for producing behavior. This practice was common since Neolithic times in Europe, Siberia, China, and the Americas. I know the history is a bit problematic since it gave rise to the practice of lobotomy, yet it is an important piece of history nonetheless.
You're right that it's absolutely an important piece of history! We talk about it in our book, along with a looooot of other things. It's hard when you're trying to fit in a lot of history into one video. Unfortunately, trepanning was cut for time, but it honestly could be its own video in the future. Keep your eyes peeled!
This channel is a gold mine.
It'd be sooo cool if you made a video on neurophilosophy and the different views on the consciousness debate (dualism, identity theories, idealism, mysterianism, even panpsychism). I know that that's kind of pushing the boundaries of your channel, but that's exactly the kind of content that the brain sciences need! When it comes to the hard problem of consciousness, collaboration between philosophy and science couldn't be more of a pressing issue. You tackling the topic would be perfect.
Disagree: at least until the general field of philosophy isn't dominated by white men and I start seeing non white males regularly find their way into my world of philosophical experience.
@@BlabbermouthRex It's a shame that you would rather not consume quality content based on the source's race, but I'd wager most people have no problem with studying white philosophers as long as the arguments are thought provoking. And this is coming from a Latino.
Also, they could easily talk about, for example, Susan Blackmore's insights into consciousness, so I don't see why a video on the topic would necessarily not be diverse, especially coming from a channel that's proven to be very open to counterculture.

I have a mouth tic. Basically I move my jaw left and right. It’s SO annoying. Then i crack my fingers and move my neck. What should I do? Is there a way to completely remove it or I’ll stay like this for the rest of my life? I hope so and I hope this will work. Pls give me advice on what to do.

There is no "better". It's all together. My wife has a masters in Psychology. I Studied Sociology. I believe you can't have one without the other. You need all of these disciplines in order to help people.

The way I see it... Psychology is an abstraction of neuroscience.

isn't psychology just coming up with theories by thinking (like psychoanalysis) which is kinda getting some kind of inner feeling and philosophizing about it, and neuroscience actually tries to look at the brain structure and define its parts?
and then we can do data science on psychology, and data driven neuroscience, clearly data science is the win Micah
If "mind" exists in another realm of our body, how is DID a thing?
I suppose the argument would be that all of those "minds" exist in another realm. Not saying I agree with it, but you could make an argument. On a related note, I'm also somewhat skeptical of DID as a diagnosis, but that's a personal issue.
neuroscience knows our behaviour starts in the brain and our behaviour affects the brain. brain is a source of ourselves. anything is in the brain. psychology is a broader disciplines, attempts to prove several social concepts like gender, culture, behaviour mechanism without looking into brain. the fact people behave certain way, have certain sexual attractions etc. its all has a source in the brain. neuroscience is narrower but it nails it. neuroscience wins. neuroscience is a science, psychology wannnabe science.
I love you guys and I don't want to be critical, you do you. Just my personal feedback though, it was odd to me that as 2 modern scientists, you gave so much credence to dualism. I'm not saying dualism is wrong, but it's like intelligent design, it's a valid philosophical argument but sort of outside the realm of science.
Again, love your work though, and I'll keep enjoying your videos!
Tyler you made an intelligent comment, but can I suggest my rejections to it to a some degree? Brain interpretation is how-many dimensional do you believe? Foe example if we think about the monetary system, it is one-dimensional: everything has a price, much or less. But knowledge can be interpreted and projected to quiet different domains and values. Duality is the magical eye-glass to spare us from the magnetic gravity of 1-dimensionality. Even if the dual is stupid and old fashioned. Don't you think? Over simplifying to century's norms is blunt or not?
I always thought neuroscience was like math. Certain things have specific functions and formulas. Psychology was like philosophy or art. Things *can be certain ways but not *always for every person or situation.
It’s crazy that a 24 year old could get dementia doctors proved it cerebral atrophy, enlarged ventricles, cavum septum pellucidum and depigmentation of the substantia nigra, with microscopic evidence of my brain scan showed all but was never warned you send someone out of icu in three days after being pronounced dead for 12 minutes you see all this damage to a child’s brain but failed to warn it’s crazy throughout all the years taking brain injuries since 7 would change but didn’t all most die from any of them then at 14 started taking chair shots Bobwire baseball bat shots to the head putting trough tables To me I had stage three cte and was never the same i Guess to get cte you must have a lot of head blows can’t get cte dementia from one brain injury people our dumb not to talk about someone’s condition
The biggest question you won't ever try to answer is, does a human fetus have a form of consciousness.
If by consciousness you mean subjective experience, then the answer would be, initially no. But when the conscious personality becomes connected to the brain, from that point on, it would be conscious.

Good video but... u are rong... la psicología estudia la conducta o comportamiento, no la mente. Esto es porque "mente" todavía no es un constructo científico pero "conducta" si. La encargada de estudiar a la mente o psique es la filosofía. La neurociencia no estudia la "brain biology", estudia a las Neuronas que son la principal célula del cerebro.
Para el estudio de la "biología del cerebro" existe la fisiología del Sistema Nervioso y para estudiar la fisiología o biologia del cerebro encargada de la conducta está la psicofisiología.
Sin embargo la Psicología cognitiva es una transdiciplina que une a la neurociencia, la psicofisiología, la psicología en orden de estudiar los procesos cognitivos, y que también están asociados a nuestra conducta. and in places like México or India, there are More woman in psichology than men, that includes the population on the studies they do.
