I would have broken those European Sparrows' necks and left their dead bodies on top of the cage to let the hawk eat them. After all, European sparrows are not native to America and they kill native birds' eggs and babies in order to steal their nests. Just leave a couple of live sparrows in the cage to lure the hawks in and leave the carcasses of the dead sparrows on top of the cage as gifts for the hawks.

House sparrows compete with bluebirds for nest sites and sometimes even kill them. So, of course, bluebirders dislike sparrows and find ways to reduce their population. Bluebirders, who enjoy killing sparrows trap them and euthanize, some prefer to shoot. Ones who love all birds and don't enjoy euthanazing, of course, use alternative ways to deal with sparrows: use other types of nest boxes, in which bluebirds can have advantege, don't put sparrow's favourite food in feeders, remove feeders during breeding season, wall up all holes in house (sparrows' and starlings' favourite breeding site, almost never used by native birds) and, as extreme measure, remove sparrow's nests (before eggs hatch). Killing of sparrows is not only solution, just easiest one, this is why trappers and shooters don't even try other methods. Some prefer lethal control because they have snakes and raptors as pets and want free food for them.
@@FalconfromRF yes...let's eradicate anything that doesn't suit your ethos of which species should live or die, just because one is pretty ,and the other brown, boring and successful.

I have the same trap and like this video I had a juvenile coopers hawk like this one hang around the trap. That bird would patiently wait for me to walk right up to the trap and would let me take a sparrow from the trap and feed to him or her.
I am amazed that people are complaining about trapping sparrows. HELLO, those house sparrows kill and peck to death the native song birds. Watch the UA-cam showing a mother BlueBird being pecked by a male house sparrow while she tries to protect her eggs/hatchlings. HE KILLS her. Why did the sparrow kill the BlueBird, because it's what they do. Check in with the Wildlife Federation and Audobon Society and learn what House Sparrows are and why they are the only species that should be dispatched and destroyed. I wish the trapped sparrows in this video could be fed to that Cooper's Hawk, maybe rig a tall feeding platform on top of a pole so they can come and get the collected birds rather than going to waste. I wish uninformed individuals would stop feeding house sparrows and perpetuating the problems they cause.
I guess you don't know that behavior like that is common amongst birds. Birds compete for nesting spaces. This often times can get bloody. Honestly, The biggest problem for the 'gentle' bluebird is that its habitat is being developed by humans, and our homes, non native bushes and thick trees make it easy for more aggressive birds to move in.
I do know the behavior, I also know about habitat and I also know that your profile photo of a Polish Chicken is an example of something that can't see beyond it's own feet. What is your point? I say trap and kill off every house sparrow you can find. This helps native song birds that contribute to a healthy eco-system. Of course we know that birds compete for nesting spaces, where did I say they don't?
I thought you were using their aggressive behavior to justify them being the only species that needs to be killed off, however there are.other invasive birds that need to be controlled and many native birds who are just as likely to pull chicks from nests. I'm fine with controlling an invasive, but my problem is that this method is futile. It isn't even that effective, as you won't catch the whole flock with a trap. Sparrows have established themselves throughout the country. At this point, getting rid of them will be like getting rid of Asian carp- nearly impossible, if you only try to kill them. You can still trap them, but I think we should also look into sparrow-proofing nests and getting rid of the broad leaf bushes they like to roost in
