  • My thoughts on Boom, the third episode of Doctor Who season 1 (series 14). Could this possibly be the best episode this season?

Honestly I really think the little girl didn't need to be there in the episode, like she didn't need to be in the war zone area to still get across her point in the episode so I fully agree with you on that. The rest of it was decent, compared to how used to I got seeing characters with no character like Chris Chibnals writing and how in this one the doctor and ruby seem to be consistent on how they react to things.
Also that one scene just before that guy dies who munday loved probably should have come after the guy died and not before cause it made the plot just pause for a character moment (which is a common thing in the chibnal era unfortunately)
The episode was much better at focusing on its premise as the previous one sorta just forgot its premise was meant to be focusing on the beatles and they only show up properly like twice (Poor Ringo not getting a line at all) which would sorta be like if this episode started with the landmine then they fix the problem immediately then use the land mine to fix another problem right at the end.
Also just a sidenote cause the comments seem to be mostly moffat praise, Moffat wasn't the best writer either (not that this episode isn't good) I mean just look at sherlock or the past seasons of drwho he wrote for, season long arcs that kind of go nowhere and just exist to keep you watching. (and a lot of queerbaiting in sherlocks case)
So it's less that 'Yay Steven Moffats back' more that 'Yay he's back and confined to telling a single closed story because he is really good at those.' Because he definitely is, I mean the empty child and the doctor dances are bloody amazing but stuff like the silence arcs were just a bit of a goose chase and didn't really do much but string you along with little to no answer or clues.
Sorry really really love doctor who I'll stop typin now ^^

The robot ambulances are a lot like the cleaners from one of the old episodes in the hotel

This is what the show needed. Simple story telling. This adds something that the RTD2 era has been lacking: variety.

Still mixed messaging. Faith bad, Faith good. Easy to go for Christianity. Should be braver and go for Islam. I thought not 😊
Your review is a bit hyperbolic. It was the best of the 7 RTD episodes so far but it would mid tier season filler from previous Seasons. The Long Game was better in my opinion. However, it didn’t go without notice that the 3 straight men died. And although the kid is young she should have been old enough to tell her a Hologram from her real Dad. What let’s it down badly is the saccharine ending. It’s okay to good but it’s not good to great. The Specials did the damage first. Followed by the next 2 episodes. This doesn’t deserve to be the episode with the lowest ratings ever. 5/10

@@RaymondWilliams-uu1ns appreciate your opinion. I thought the episode was good, when you compare it to everything that's come before it from the RTD2 era this looks amazing. 8/10 doesn't mean the story is flawless it still has it's problems. The messaging is there but is handled better than say the star beast where that is trying to push it in your face. the little girl in the story was poorly written, unable to understand anything. The episode isn't perfect but compared to space Babies & devil's chord it feels more like how a doctor who episode should be.

@RaymondWilliams-uu1ns I think she pretty much figured out her dad was dead but just didn't care because "he's not gone, just dead". She came off as someone who didn't understand what was going on, but I think she just didn't really care because nothing really changed for her because of her beliefs.

Russell to Davies writing just feels so off. Steven finally made doctor who feel "right" again. Since the power of the doctor tbh

It does feel more like doctor who then everything previous from RTD2 & the tone was consistent in this 1 for once.

I thought Splice came off as clueless at first as well, but once you learn she doesnt care that her dad is dead because she believes he is not actually gone i figured she knew what was up, she just didnt react the way we thought she would and it comes off like shes oblivious to whats happening.
I think she just has so much faith in what she believes in that she immediately accepted it, which would explain why she was just happy to see pictures of her past being projected.

    • @thewhoview
      @thewhoview  2 місяці тому

Yeah I suppose you could say that, it makes her character feel more accepting of his death because of her strong faith & belief that her father isn't really gone. I think that it wasn't written or conveyed in the best way. But I'll keep what you said in mind when I rewatch it. 😊

Gatwa was great, given the script, but nearly every other character was given short shrift. What's worse is that it portrays Ruby in the worst way possible. Except for a singular moment of heroism, her every other choice is to delay, distract, and put her own priorities ahead of any danger or threat to the Doctor or vast numbers of lives. Whenever there was a chance for her to increase the Doctor's chances of suffering harm or delay in the most urgent of circumstances, she took it. There is a fan theory that Ruby is a plant by an enemy of the Doctor and this episode, so far, gives the most evidence so far that even if she is personally ignorant of it, her presence in the Tardis and with the Doctor is a clear and present danger to him and anyone he loves.

The 60th anniversary specials wasn't special at all. They was just normal episodes. 50th was so much better. And guess what.... Written by Steven!

Yeah I don't know how you have 3 anniversary specials fail at feeling like a celebration of your show. I know a lot of people liked wild blue yonder but for me it was just a rehash of the plot of midnight. I thought all 3 were super underwhelming.

Okay so I don't know everyone is praising this episode I just think everybody's in culture shock still from the Chibnall era.
This is a great episode but it's not even my favorite from this season. And admittedly like I probably prefer Moffitt era over RTD era... But y'all need to calm your jets like every single one of you.
This was a great episode Don't get me wrong but like y'all need to chill for real

This was a good episode. 8/10 doesn't mean it's flawless it still has it's imperfections: the little girl Splice for 1 thing I think was poorly written, unable to understand anything happening in front of her. The messaging about capitalism isn't exactly subtle either. It feels like Moffat is using a lot of things we've seen before. Ncuti feels a lot more like the doctor in this. The story felt more like how the show use to be. I haven't enjoyed much of the RTD2 era so far & this looks like gold in comparison to the previous episodes.
