I have two very close friends areTibetan monks.these two were born in 80's,and became monk as a minor before graduating middle school ,in that time they didn’t have bilingual education in school.only learn Tibetan language. So until he was 25years old ,they always traveled different cities and also temples in China, But it is pretty difficult for Tibetans who have never learned Mandarin to travel on the mainland ,At last both of them have to spend time and tuition to study mandarin in Chengdu. There is a private language training school in Chengdu, where a large number of adult Tibetan monks learn Mandarin and English there. Who would question the intention of implementing trilingual education in Tibetan schools as cultural extinction?MyTibetan monks are all descendants of serfs. At present, the sister of one of the monk runs a local restaurant in Tibet, and his brother is grazing yak in the meadow. Their family has more than 150 yaks in total, and their annual income is higher than most of Chinese.I often talk to these two monks about the Dalai Lama, as they said, the Dalai Lama is their center of spiritual belief, but returning to real life, no one wants to go back to the former serf system and suffer a life without freedom.

Must read written by Bill Purkayastha:
As an Indian, let me say what I think about this article and this issue.
First: the border between India and China had been repeatedly redrawn by the British during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The historical Kashmir territory had been a Mughal Empire possession, then been taken from it by the Sikh Empire, which in the early 1840s was in turn annexed by the Brits and Kashmir put under a puppet Hindu Dogra dynasty. The basic importance of Kashmir to the Brits was that it was a frontier state against “Russian expansion” like Afghanistan, which was not at the time (until the Afghan Independence War of 1919) permitted by the Brits to have a foreign policy. The space between Kashmir and Afghanistan was left to Tibet, which in turn was under the control of the weak and powerless Chinese Empire.
After the Chinese Revolution of 1911 the Brits - who had invaded Tibet in 1903 - decided to cut away Tibet from China before the latter could get strong. They therefore called a “Simla Conference” in 1913 at the Indian city of Simla, now Shimla. The participants were the Dalai Lama’s people, the British under one Henry MacMahon, and one single Chinese representative, Ivan Chen. At that conference the Brits unilaterally divided Tibet into two - an Outer (southern) Tibet that was to be under Chinese “suzerainty” but with no Chinese “sovereignty”, and an Inner (northern) Tibet under both Chinese suzerainty and sovereignty. That is, South Tibet would be explicitly Chinese in name only. MacMahon also redrew the border between the two entities of British India and Outer Tibet, claiming what is now the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh in the east, calling the new border Britain unilaterally imposed the MacMahon Line. At the same time it explicitly relinquished a large part of its claimed borders of Kashmir in the West, leaving the plateau of Aksai Chin in Ladakh to Outer Tibet. The Dalai Lama’s regime eagerly agreed, but the Chinese did not.
*No Chinese government, Nationalist or Communist, has ever at any time recognised the validity of the Simla Conference or the MacMahon Line.* This is essential to remember. And it did not happen during the Chinese Civil War as this article claims, it happened long before that.
In 1947 India became “independent”, though its military was still equipped and led by British officers. When they left, Nehru began a policy of deliberately promoting incompetent yes-men to the Army’s top ranks so as to not have a military coup. China was still weak and just recovering from the Civil War and was embroiled in Korea, and, seizing the opportunity, in 1951 India invaded Tibetan territory that was explicitly left to Outer Tibet in the east by the MacMahon Line, the monastery town of Tawang, and annexed it. On 1 July 1954 Nehru also unilaterally extended the Indian claim line in Kashmir to re include Aksai Chin, which had been left to Tibet by MacMahon. My father, a young man at the time, himself confirmed to me that before 1954 Indian maps always depicted Aksai Chin in China.
*India cannot simultaneously claim the MacMahon Line in the east and Aksai Chin in the west.* The two are mutually exclusive. It cannot be legally done.
China had repeatedly suggested through the 1950s a straightforward swap - Aksai Chin for the MacMahon Line. India refused every time.
During the late 1950s to mid 60s, too, India hosted CIA listening posts in the Himalayas to spy on China. India and the CIA armed and trained Khampa rebels and parachuted and infiltrated them into Chinese Tibet. India - violating its own promise to China to not permit political activities - allowed the fugitive Dalai Lama regime to set up a “government in exile” in Dharmashala near Shimla. American engagement with India against China is nothing new.
As for the current crisis, it’s entirely manufactured by the Modi regime. The regime is desperate to distract attention from a collapsed economy, a ruinous failed lockdown, surging COVID-19 numbers, ravaging locusts, financial criminals who were permitted to escape abroad, rising popular discontent, and no idea how to fix things. It therefore chose to pick a fight with China, which boomeranged badly. The regime media has suddenly fallen silent on the topic while those media not under the regime claim massive further Indian territorial losses in Aksai Chin. It’s not going to end in war anyway. The Indian army is too weak to take on the Chinese alone, and America is not going to commit suicide for the greater glory of Narendrabhai Damodardasbhai Modi.
All Politicians are skilled in the Art of War (声东击西)the best distraction for internal problems is to find a common external enemy... It’s done by the West, by the East... in all such cases needless lives are lost...

D Tan .........thanks for a very insightful posting. I agreed the recent border clashes were created to divert attention from the covid 19 damaging effects on India’ economy and the potential high number of deaths. I remember Modi also sent his war planes to attack and killed several Pakistanis just before recent India’s general election. Politicians that resorted to killing to remain in power are evil and should be charged with murder.

Thanks for this. It's informative and by tracing the origin of how the border was drawn up highlights the intervention of Britain, who's cunning enough to leave the border region as a possible flash point for future conflicts. Western powers planted seeds of possible disputes in other countries and if war ever broke out, they would further destabilise the region.

My wife is Tibetan, born in Lhasa. Missionaries and explorers in the 1950's described Tibet as an "open sewer." There were no roads, bridges, schools, airports and the life expectancy of Tibetans was 33 years under the DL. The Chinese disapproval of the DL started when the DL was helping the CIA smuggle spy documents out of Russia, across Tibet, the DL was warned 3 times before China took over. Now life expectancy is 55 years under the Chinese which isn't bad for a country whose lowest elevation is 13,000 feet above sea level. My wife's mother had bad altitude sickness and my wife's family had to walk to the Chinese border to catch a train to Chengdu since there were no medical facilities in Tibet at that time. Since Tibetans couldn't own land under the DL, they were all functionally slaves. If you dig around on the US State Department website, you can discover the DL gets money from the CIA to be a "China irritant." The DL scurried out of Lhasa after being invited to a ballet by the Chinese governor, there was no threat, no pursuit. It is also documented that angry mobs chased a number of the DL's functionaries out of Tibet after the DL went to India.

While travelling through the majestic land, many places were extremely hard to get to, I spent time with the locals including the those raising the life stocks in the wildness. The entire trip completely changed my view of Tibet which I had got primarily from the western medias for the 30+ years in USA. I am looking forward to going back there again once all of the travel restrictions are lifted.

I went to an Tibeten area back in 2015, and the monk guide in the second biggest temple there was still boasting the class difference, telling that some higher level monks lives in a luxury quarter while the others have to share a room with several families. He kept reminding us that we are materialistic people and we are all about money, meanwhile he was the only person talking about money the whole time. Of course there was also some other monks who just smiled and let us look around. But after that trip, I won't have any fantasy of the peaceful spiritual image that was portrayed of there anymore.

  • @asw654
    @asw654 2 роки тому +53

Let me say, in the Dalai Lama's defense, he was initially very supportive of the Chinese gov't and even went to Beijing to meet with Mao personally. Just take a look at the photos he took with Mao. Those smiles were genuine. There was certainly trust during that time.
Regardless how we might feel about communism and its practicality, he fully believed in communist plans to modernize Tibet. He was progressive for his time. (Note: A lot of Tibetans, including Tibetan communist Phuntsok Wangyal who led the Chinese to Lhasa, believed in "the ComIntern", and the dream of a worldwide communist movement.)
The problem was that he's basically been put into difficult situations and taking bad advice from bad actors throughout his life.
The fact that he is now so critical of the Chinese gov't has more to do with:
    1. He was put into a difficult situation when a group of Tibetans were trained by the CIA to rebel and secede from China. The CIA wanted to stir up troubles. Most Tibetans themselves say the Dalai Lama's brother worked with the CIA on this, without the Dalai Lama's knowledge. This is something ex-CIA readily admit to now, and it's even declassified by the CIA. No point denying it.
    2. Even as PLA were marching on Lhasa, he was GOING to stay until his Dorje Shugden "oracle" told him to flee. Note that dorje shugden is banned by the Dalai Lama today. lol. So after he flees, it pretty much guarantees to the Chinese army that he was behind the rebellions. Now he's basically screwed himself because of the advice of someone else. Not even his own decision. An "oracle's" lol.
    3. He's been funded millions by the CIA and has had their agents by his side. Again, declassified so no point denying it.
    4. He was given an opportunity before 1990 by the Chinese gov't to come back and head the Tibet Autonomous Region. He was told by "associates" at his side (likely CIA influenced) to wait until the collapse of the Soviet Union, and that he'll have more leverage when the Chinese gov't collapsed soon after. We all know the story. China, unlike the USSR, did not collapse, and he ended up with LESS leverage.
I could go on and on, but basically, he's not "evil" (unlike what Chinese gov't and ultranationalists keep stubbornly/stupidly repeating). He just has a history of uncritically taking the bad advice of others and not making his own decisions. He was being way too much of a pushover to people he perceives as his allies. Like Patrick French commented, "He may be a god, but he's no politician." (French was an ex-director of the Free Tibet Campaign in London for multiple decades, so clearly he tries to side with Tibetans, but even he questions the decision making of HHDL.)
(Please feel free to research the name drops I used above to verify this information for yourself. Don't feel like you need to take my word for it. I strongly encourage you to do your own research, own due diligence, and come to your own judgment.)

      @asw654 2 роки тому +11

@@DanielDumbrill thanks for your response. I'm a fan of your content and I respect the knowledge you have and the effort you put in.
To clarify, my comment and defense of the Dalai Lama was directed more towards the others in the audience. I was pretty confident you already knew enough of the subject yourself.
Thanks for your recommendation! I've actually read a bit of it, but then stopped because I kept being told I was wumao for even considering it (one guy literally went to Amazon searching for negative reviews and used the criticisms word for word against me). So most of my thoughts are actually based on records that Westerners couldn't possibly accuse of being CPC propaganda. E.g. the biographical "Tibetan Revolutionary", since Wangyal himself was actually a victim of Chinese gov't paranoia (he was imprisoned for a while during the USSR collapse and Chinese near-civil war during that period).
yeah it's a bit sad that i basically self-censor because of how often I get called wumao (with no hint of irony from the accusers), but it is what it is.
But even with those sources I've let through that self-censorship, it's still pretty obvious that there wasn't a planned "invasion". The most we could say against the Chinese communists at the time was there was a lot of miscommunications and chaos... which is pretty understandable considering the ravages of WW2 and civil war, and the fact that most of them were just peasants.

the “democratization reform” that the central government planned to perform in Tibet were strict. The privileged class were going to lose their privileges, land, even wealth. From the stance of them it’s violent revolution, but from the stance of serves it’s liberation. it’s natural some of the privileged class would rebel, and only Dalai himself knows whether he agreed to rebel or just affected by his surroundings. People often want to compare modern day India with China, I say, no, compare India with Tibet first. ~70 years after fully getting rid of the ugly, towering criminal serfdom system, see how far Tibet has moved forward in many aspects, from social development to life quality to infrastructure, while India...

Every year the local government sends high quality local officers to assist Lingzhi city, they stay there for 1-3 years on shifts. Helping Tibet building infrastructure such as hospital, highway, etc. spending tons of money there. I have a classmate he is out local officer and he stayed there for 3 years helping Tibet building their highway. He told me a lot of stories over there. Actually, a lot of inland cities have a sister city in Tibet under the organizations by the central government. When China was in a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, this was a completely dark era for the whole of China, and Tibet was in a closed slave society. At that time, did Western society care about the lives of Tibetans? Do they care about the human rights and freedom of Tibetans? When Western society needed to attack the Chinese government, Western society began to show great enthusiasm for the lives and human rights of the Tibetan people. The Dalai Lama is used as a tool, and human rights and freedom are the cheapest tool to attack the Chinese government. Regardless of whether the Chinese government is kind, at least for now, Tibetans will not starve to death because of lack of food. They can walk freely anywhere in Tibet, and children can receive nine-year compulsory education. Go to the most remote place in Tibet. The best building there must be the school.

Read here to enrich your knowledge:
WHAT IS CHINA’S ARGUMENT ON TIBET?
China is very aware of the strength of the movement for Tibet's freedom. Inside Tibet, it uses repression and violence against that movement. Outside of China, it uses propaganda.
These are the six key arguments in the Tibet sovereignty debate, which China relies on to justify its continued occupation of Tibet.
Read on to discover what China says versus the truth.
      1. CHINA SAYS: TIBET IS PART OF CHINA
      China's argument:
Tibet was absorbed about 800 years ago during the Yuan Dynasty, becoming an inseparable part of China. It has not been a country since and no country has ever recognised Tibet as an independent state.
      The facts:
It’s true that whilst Tibet maintained a unique culture, written and spoken language, religion and political system for centuries, it has never been a nation-state in the modern sense of the word.
At times in its long past, Tibet has influenced and been influenced by various foreign powers, including Britain and the Mongols, as well as China.
However, the Chinese government’s claim that Tibet has been part of China for around 800 years isn't supported by the facts.
Tibet was not ruled by the Chinese government prior to the 1950 invasion. In 1912, the 13th Dalai Lama - Tibet's political and spiritual leader - issued a proclamation reaffirming Tibet’s independence and the country maintained its own national flag, currency, stamps, passports and army. It signed international treaties and maintained diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries.
From a legal point of view Tibet remains an independent state under illegal occupation, a fact that China wishes it could whitewash from history.
Read more on our page Is Tibet a country?.
      2. CHINA SAYS: OLD TIBET WAS BACKWARDS AND NEEDED CHINA TO LIBERATE IT
      China's argument:
From 1950 to 1959 China peacefully liberated and democratically reformed Tibet, ending the old feudal serfdom where brutality was rife; a hell on earth with the backwards masses enslaved by landlords and priests. This culminated in Serf Emancipation Day in March 1959 when the Tibetan government was declared illegal.
      The facts:
In 1950, the newly established Communist regime in China invaded Tibet, which was rich in natural resources and had a strategically important border with India.
With 40,000 Chinese troops in its country, the Tibetan government was forced to sign the "Seventeen Point Agreement" which recognised China's rule in return for promises to protect Tibet's political system and Tibetan Buddhism.
Far from welcoming the Chinese as liberators, Tibetans across the country continued to resist China’s armed forces and China responded with widespread brutality.
Resistance culminated on the 10th of March 1959, when 300,000 Tibetans surrounded the Potala Palace to offer the Dalai Lama protection. This date is commemorated as National Uprising Day by Tibetans and supporters.
In 1950, many states that are today stable democracies were undemocratic and did not respect human rights. The 14th Dalai Lama was a teenager when his country was invaded and was never able to govern Tibet independently. In exile, he has won the Nobel Peace Prize and has entirely democratised the exiled Tibetan government. In contrast, the Chinese government continues to have no democratic authority.
China claims that its vision of a brutal past justifies its occupation. But Tibet under Chinese rule has experienced brutality on a massive scale - from the destruction of thousands of monasteries and the deaths more than one million Tibetans in Mao’s era, to torture, arbitrary arrests and the denial of fundamental freedoms today.
Read an overview on our Tibet’s history timelines.
      3. CHINA SAYS: TIBET ALREADY HAS AUTONOMY
      Map of Tibet under China
      China's argument:
Tibet already has autonomy as the Tibet Autonomous Region of the PRC. Tibetans are free to follow their traditions and Tibetan Buddhism is protected.
      The facts:
This map shows historic Tibet - the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) is only part of this and millions of Tibetans live outside it.
The TAR has autonomy in name only. In reality, the most senior political position in the region, the TAR Communist Party Secretary, has never been occupied by a Tibetan and Beijing is in charge. The official language is Chinese, with many Tibetan children losing their ability to speak and write Tibetan. Resistance to China's rule - from singing to environmental protests - is met with repression and brutality.
As for the right to follow Tibetan Buddhism freely, monasteries are subject to monitoring and control by the Communist Party and monks and nuns are feared and often persecuted by the Chinese regime. Any Tibetan possessing an image of the Dalai Lama risks imprisonment.
      4. CHINA SAYS: TIBETANS ARE PROSPEROUS AND HAPPY UNDER CHINA’S RULE
Image of happy Tibetans in Chinese state news
      China's argument:
Since China peacefully liberated Tibet it has seen glorious development: there’s almost zero poverty, disease and hunger; life expectancy has doubled; literacy has risen from 5% to 85% and former slaves have been given land. There has also been huge investment in infrastructure, jobs, housing, schools and hospitals.
      The facts:
China’s propaganda images, like this one, are designed to show how happy Tibetans are. This couldn't be further from the truth, with Tibetans left disadvantaged in their own country. For example:
Infrastructure projects enable the movement of China’s military, mass immigration of Chinese workers, Chinese tourism and access to Tibet’s rich resources. They enforce China’s control.
Economic growth benefits Chinese businesses and workers, and the booming tourism industry aims to legitimise the Chinese government’s occupation.
Millions of Tibetan nomads have been forced from their lands, ending their centuries-old way of life and leaving them dependent on the state as second class citizens in their own country.
Education is primarily taught in Chinese, disadvantaging Tibetans who can only learn their mother tongue as a second language.
The United Nations has repeatedly challenged China on human rights abuses in Tibet, including finding Tibet the worst area for child malnutrition in China.
Since March 2011, more than 150 people have set themselves on fire inside Tibet in protest against China's repression.
From shouting “Tibet needs freedom” in the street to attending a mass protest, Tibetans resist China’s policies daily. Despite 70 years of occupation this resistance to China remains undiminished and widespread.
Tibet has seen economic progress, as have most countries in the last seventy years, but Tibetans have benefited less than Chinese immigrants. Economic progress has not deterred them from rejecting Chinese rule and the evidence shows that Tibetans are far from “happy” under China’s control.
      5. CHINA SAYS: THE DALAI LAMA WANTS POWER, NOT PEACE
Tibetan woman holding the Dalai Lama's image
      China's argument:
The Dalai Lama is the latest in a line of "God King Dictators" - he is a politician in monk’s clothing whose agenda is to secure an independent Tibet which he can rule again. Global Tibet supporters - and some Tibetans inside Tibet - naively buy into lies created by the "Dalai Lama clique".
      The facts:
The Dalai Lama is respected by people the world over. In exile, he has devolved his political power to a democratic institution and is a consistent advocate of friendship with the Chinese people and dialogue with the Chinese government. He does not seek an independent Tibet but a "Middle Way" approach which seeks greater freedom for Tibetans without independence.
Much of the global support Tibet has today is thanks to the Dalai Lama’s popularity. Despite persecution, the Tibetan people inside Tibet remain dedicated to him.
Desperate to maintain its grip on Tibet, the Chinese government is intent on undermining the Dalai Lama’s credibility.
      6. CHINA SAYS: FREE TIBET SUPPORTERS ARE ANTI-CHINA
Tibet supporters marching in the UK
      China's argument:
The Free Tibet movement is supported by Western anti-China forces. Human rights are China’s internal affair and Westerners who have never been to Tibet have no right to speak against China’s policies.
      The facts:
Free Tibet supporters have no argument with the Chinese people. They support Free Tibet because they see Tibetans as victims of the undemocratic Chinese government and see Tibetans’ unwavering struggle for freedom as a just cause.
Chinese people are also victims of the Chinese Communist Party’s rule and many also face severe punishments in resisting its policies. When they learn the truth beyond their government’s propaganda, many Chinese people also support Tibet.
At Free Tibet we share the stories of Tibetans who resist China's rule and who are victims of China's human rights abuses. These voices are hidden from the Chinese government’s official communications. We receive no support from any government or political organisation.
We expose the truth and many people around the world choose to support Tibetans.
CHINA IS DESPERATE TO SMOTHER THE TRUTH
The truth is not on China’s side, so it must continue to lie.
The Chinese government continues to spread its arguments on Tibet through official statements and propaganda, paid online commentators and even fake social media accounts.
But Tibetans won't give up until they have freedom.
Until they do, our work - exposing China’s lies and sharing the truth - must continue.

Are these "Free Tibet supports" really stand with the 95% of common people? Why don't we let the video tell the truth, the one just like Daniel did? As far as I am concerned, these free-Tebit supporters are just a bunch of political extremists, old Tibetan landlords, and CIA spies, who were all supported by US, intended to wage a "Color Revolution" in Tibet, China, just like they did in Eastern Europe.

A little yard surrounded by the building with dead specimens of horses, eagles, monkeys and etc on the 2nd floor staring at you. And the only place with light is where you stand. A monk was beating the drum with a human-skull-headed stick restlessly for months(several of them did the job to make sure the beats wouldn't stop during months-long religious rituals ).

Almost all the new emperors were from bottom of the society. I just watched a vlog of an Indian girl married to a Chinese living in Guangzhou. So all the nobles had left and those remained were serfs and now liberated. So Tibetans who had left behind will not fight for the 'Tibetan freedom' requested by those who had left.

Exactly! Why those Tibetans in Tibet would take such drastic step as self immolate if the Chinese have liberated Tibet.!!!
The height of unashamed brazen lies. But it's no surprise after all it's china we are talking about here, china which is the epitome of lies and easily exposed brazen lies. You fool no-one china and China's paid army of trolls.

In case someone want to check the name of that person in English, the clan is Palha/Phalha and the given name is Zhaxi-Wangqug/Trashi-Wangchuk. According to Tibetan naming conventions, he should be referred as Palha Zhaxi Wangqug (ZYPY) or Phalha Trashi Wangchuk (pseudo-Wylie).
The r in Tibetan word _trashi_ is frequently omitted by English corruption.

And, I really love the background music you chose in the road trip clip in the latter part of this video. Can you please let me know some names of them?
Many thanks and best wishes to you😄

Thanks Daniel for opening up our eyes to the darkness that the West would not talk about in Tibet when it was under Dalai Lama. The serf system in Tibet bears some resemblance to the Indian Caste system that is unyielding to this day in India, in places such as Madhya Pradesh.
India's caste system is the oldest form of surving social stratification.
    The brutality is well documented.
Artifacts include Tibetan human skin Thangka (religious drawing), painted onto the peeled skin of a 16 year old girl.

@Forever Yours Are you denying the existence of the cruel and savage of serfdom in Tibet? Also, it doesn't make any sense to say "Tibean were threatened to speak Tibetan" ... Sometimes, you guys accuse CPC of destroying Tibetan culture, while other times, you are telling people Tibean were forced to speak Tibetan ... which one do you want us to believe? BTW, can I say Indians in UK were threatened to speak English but they are also forced to speak with a strong Indian accent LOL

@@Alpha9109-e6b They are not talking about slavery like thousands years ago, instead, they showed some photos and documents only decades ago in Tibet, which is really shocking. In addition, serfdom is not equivalent to slavery, in which people still lived a horrible life although they were not exactly in the cage. Why does it matter if this guy was arranged by CPC? If u provided evidence to debunk their arguments, that is cool. But if u just say "Aha, they are CPC reporters" and u expect it automatically prove your points, it is not convincing at all... BTW, I notice u changed to a different name, hopefully I am not talking to some random bot

I have worked in Tibet for 2 years, I had been to almost every place in Tibet.
No one love to restore the dalai lama system. During dalai lama's age, slave owners chop off slaves' arm just for a sword testing. There were no human rights for 95% of population.

Tiananmen square remember anyone?? Chinese government has not liberated their own, how can they liberate Tibetans, Uighurs and other annexed lands. nah!! Courage is definitely not it. Shameful way of earning a living, poor thing is more like it. Selling ones soul to the devil. Pitiful Daniel, yes. Courage, definitely not.
