As a lad and a cadet on a FD..we had a 1968 American LaFrance fire engine, and a 69 fire truck... The battery switch had 3 positions with 2 large 8d batteries...it was battery1, battery2, or both batteries..and yes it was for redundancy..our ambulance has the same battery set up
