I remember going on a test drive in one of these coaches with my dad and mother back in 1973. My dad wanted one so badly but they were so expensive, about $18,000 back then. He and my mom were just starting out and I was a little kid. It was so fantastic. Even as a child, I recognized how special it was.
This brings so many fond memories. We didn't own one but our neighbors did. What I really like is how pragmatic and well-built these are. Why spend $1MM on a new poorly built RV when you can get one of these, fix it up, and spend a fraction.
Two of my coaches are in this video……that is so exciting. I’ve never left a comment on UA-cam but this time I was compelled. The one that Jim is standing in front of I ended up acquiring when the shop was closing down and the blue one with the white stripe that gets featured a few times is also, one of the blessed possessions that I get to call mine. It’s really just stewardship at the end of the day. Carrying this forward is a definite passion and deserves all of the gumption and forward thought that we can muster. Long live the GMC motorhome!!!
I love that there's a passionate community behind these things. They're gorgeous, spacious and far ahead of their time That said, just seeing these specialized businesses pop up tells me there's no way I could own one of these and not perpetually drain my bank account in the process lol
Awesome video! Like most people, I've heard of the GMC Motorhome. I've seen a few over the years. Given their overall dimensions of 26' in length, I would think they'd be easier to drive than most motorhomes offered today.
I am an Australian & l ❤ these old Coaches. 26 ft isn't 2 long. There not massively wide & definitely not tall like a Bus Coach . A very Sensible Size . Gr8 2 see 👀 U building new Chassis, Drive Line & Engine. The really require a very very tight Lobe Centre Line Camshaft like 108 or 106 for Torque & better economy 😅
If I bought a GMC Motorhome, I'd keep what I can as original as possible, but I'd also upgrade a few things. Among the upgrades I'd have done would be either a Detroit 6.5 litre Turbo Diesel engine, or if possible a Duramax 6.6 litre Diesel engine. 🙂
If I decide to purchase a 1978 GMC motorhome just like this one I would put a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 3800 Mopar series Pontiac engine in it and install a 55 inch tv in the back of the bedroom with an Atari 2600 flashback gaming console and an aluminum alloy frame with updated racing brakes tuned for higher loading capacity for its weight distribution and a custom exhaust system with cherry bomb exhaust sounds cool I really love older rvs
There’s a guy in Empire Nevada who has a dozen of these rigs sitting in the desert east across Hwy 447 from the town and gypsum wall board factory. You can see the rigs on Google Earth.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles What if Donatello build a battle vehicle out of gmc Motorhome or prevost motor coaches or the peacemaker bus or freightliner mt45?
The GMC CO-OP is out of business and was liquidating assets at the time this story aired in April. However, the Motorhome Rehab Ranch is not out of business as Jim is still rich with his knowledge of Motorhome Restoration.

You understand these are front wheel drive and must remain that way. There is no driveshaft to the rear and no room or space to accommodate one
Just checked the website given here for Jim....says under construction. Would love to talk with him.
I want one!
We call ours "the Imperial Shuttle"
Epic
