Folding silicone pet bowls of an identical design can be purchased for a fraction of the price Sea-to-Summit charge. They're practically the same thing, without the extortionate price hike. I wouldn't be surprised if they come from the same factories. Branding costs more than materials.
Fred Gandt You nailed it. My wife used to work in a pet store. These collapsible cups, and the metal dishes you see in the outdoor stores were a fraction of the cost.
Food grade silicone is the key to check for. Im doubting pet products are regulated as food safe. Just do your research as there are chemicals in pet products that you do not want to consume.
As others have stated, the silicone does impart a taste to whatever you put in it. That being said I have a xmug and xbowl in my everyday pack because they fold flat. When I go camping I bring my large Wildo Fold-a-cup. Very light and no silicone taste, but not as compact.
i honestly think i get more excited about these type reviews than the gun stuff.. there's only so many guns I can look at before it doesnt excite me anymore. but these reviews turn me on to new essential camp gear. good job nutn.
Sea to Summit makes some excellent gear. The Ultra-Sil Day Pack is amazing. 2.4 oz with a 20 litre capacity and somehow able to endure serious punishment. I've had mine for 4 years, hiking, travel, shopping, everything.
Love SeaToSummit gear. I have the X-Series as my go to "mess kit" when out with the scouts. Comes in handy. Light weight. Takes up little room. And cleans easy.
The only problem I found with my silicone mug is that when I drink coffee from it, the cup transfers some of its taste into the coffee, spoiling it's taste.
Right on man. These things are a must-have for building a good backpack for traveling/exploring. Got myself a compact med-kit with a bit of everything in the case it's needed. I might have to get the lime green cup + bowl, these are just cool.
Love the run n gun and shooting platforms vids. However this is hands down a simple yet great video. I miss your backpacking adventutes and mountain side gear reviews. Thanks Again for fueling the project.
I got a strainer in my kitchen utensils that uses the same concept as that XMug, the rubbery fold-up deal. It works great; I'm not surprised you like these XMugs too.
I've used the X-bowl, mug and cup for a few years now. One thing you didn't mention is that the bowl and mug or cup nest together well, all three do so ok. I use the cup for hot drinks at work and it store it in the Esbit solid fuel cookset. For backpacking I might go with the squishy bowl and cup set. No ridged rims or bottoms to fuss over and they don't care being folded and crammed in a pocket.
Great video! I love the "Sea to Summit" X series. For day hikes, I us the mug and cup for tea. The X series mug makes a great led for your "GSI" stainless steel mug. If, you want to use your stainless steel mug as a pot to boil water for two cups of tea. Or you can get the X series tea set (kettle, two mugs).
I love collapsible bowls/cups, and to be honest, this doesn't seem much fanicer or different than some other collapsible bowls/cups. If it had a lid...now THAT would be awesome! But it seems great!
Really innovative mug/bowl. The issue I always found with these mugs is that they hold in the flavor of different drinks or meals that you have had. Thoughts?
I have one of those cups and it fits perfectly into the bottom of one of the stainless steel cups with the folding handles found at wal-mart ( like a GSI cup knock off) That way I can boil water in the stainless cup, pour my hot drink into the collapsible cup, and enjoy that beverage why I continue to make soup or stew in the stainless cup after I add more water. It makes for a small, compact cook kit. Plus the lid from the Stanley cooker kit also fits the generic wal-mart stainless cup. So if you already own that Stanley cooker kit you can just use the lid from it, and combine it with those 2 cups and make a mini cook kit That's great for day hikes. (plus has room to hold powdered soup mix and hot chocolate, tea and spices)
GSI makes some nice stuff. I use to sell it and it held up very well with the folks that like to unpackage everything and constantly work it. Not ultra light gear, but if you're driving in it is great.
My dog has been needing one of these since he carries his own load now. It should keep that pack nice and slim for running through brush. Of course as a young dog he can't just take it easy. He has to run 50miles on a 10mile hike!
Damn it Nutn, you are going to make me spend more money. I love my squishy bowl. I use it at home whenever I need a bowl. But the XMug and XBowl look really slick. I like the fact that they pack down flat. The squishy can be folded and stuffed somewhere but it doesn't keep a packed shape; it wants to pop back into a bowl shape. If the XBowl and cup will fit into a military style mess kit; they would be perfect for a travel eating set. Thanks Nutn for making me spend more money. :)
I use these in a pack that my golden retriever carries for food and water bowls. I also have their aluminum bottomed cooking vessel and two sets of their titanium silverware sets. They make great stuff.
I have one of their camping bowls that I never use because it's easier just to eat out of the Mountain House pouch. Regardless, it's an awesome product.
I just found out that they make an Xpot. It's basically an x mug/bowl with an aluminum base to put on your backpacking stove. You should get one and do a review! *edit* turns out they have a kettle too. I am not so sure about the cookware. I have one of those grey GSI kettles. It's great. It's simple and solid. Folding cups and bowls seem logical. Folding pots and kettles; I don't know. It just occurred tome that one problem with a silicone pot or kettle is that you can place it in a camp fire. That is a must if your backpacking stove dies or runs out of fuel. The ability to boil water in a camp fire can save your life.
I have been taking the sea to summit collapsible items on through hikes. the absolute downside is there is no lid. the lid is the most important thing for warm beverages on the trail. I have been taking this and my trusty jet boil mug together. you absolutely need 2 mugs when on the trail.
lol nuttin that's pretty funny. I bought the sea to Summit x mug and bowl in a kit which came in a netted bag. I have had it for a about 2 years now still going strong. you can make a really big cup of coffee in the cup lol. sea to Summit sleeping bags are good too. cheers from Australia....
dude this is awsome! I'm putting together a small backpacking/carry on for my trip to maui in 5 weeks! this will definitely be coming along! thanks nutn! Double shark out!!!!
I bought the large bowl for when i go hiking, great buy Imo. Think i got it at gander Mtn. Great products, think im going to have to buy this mug now, thanks Nutn.
If you're doing folding cup reviews you should do one on plates/bowls. I have been using a products called "Fozzils" that are bowls/dishes that collapse flat (fits perfect in camelbak area of my backpack) and they button up when used. Easy to clean, tough, low weight and very affordable.
don't have the cup but the colapsable plate/bowl/cuttingboard/dog water dish by sea to summit is frickin killer mine is wider than yours and i love it use it daily and i always bring it back packing. very durable and a 10/10 in my book
You haven't gone backpacking in like 3 years. Those were my favorite vids, got me into camping and backpacking so thank you again but r.i.p old nutnfancy
I have had the X Bowl and X Plate, because they were so easy to pack, but it is a pain to clean, and the base is a "cutting board", but the only problem is when your knife slips and stabs the sides. I had to get rid of the "X wear", it was not all that stable when FULL. I actually use the Delta Bowl and Delta Plate now, because it is more stable and way easier to clean. I will give the X Mug a shot next time it see it.
These collapsible type vessels make me a little nervous. I've seen too many reviews where they collapse during use. Maybe this one less prone to do that?
I have these they work awesome! Sea to summit also has an x pot witch is also collapsible that is fantastic for backpacking. You should check it out! Great video
I really like the XMug -- did some serious travelling with it last winter. As a caution though, the silicone isn't a superb insulator: it's better than a plain plastic cup, but probably worse than anything that has "insulating" in the description.
I've got sea to summit bowls and love them, I almost bought one of the cups at the beginning of the summer but the sales guy at rei told me it will retain smell and flavor. My folding bowl hasn't but the dude talked me out of it, what's your take on that Nutn/TD?
Thanks for doing this review! I thought these might be good, just put it on my wedding registry like 2 months ago ;) Now I'm definitely going to buy it if I don't get it for my wedding.
Forgoing all the size and weight constraints, have you tried the "Yeti" mugs? They're awesome. Keep ice much longer than any others I've tried. Way out perform "Tervis" brand.
The problem with these silicone cups (or any polymer cups I've used) is that they really retain the odor and taste of whatever was put in them. I still take the X-mug hiking, but I'll probably switch to aluminum or stainless; carrying the few extra ounces being able to enjoy my drink.
I was going to insist that he has finally lost his marbles. But then I remembered I have something exactly like that in the form of a Sea to Summit folding pot. so therefore, he is genius.
nutn, I have been using these for a while, found them in rei after I bought my gsi kettlist after your review the bigger ones also make excellent travel bowls for the dog
Cutlery and drinkware are one of the most overlooked items when it comes to packing for any trips. Considering that, thanks for giving all of us a heads up on these brillant items. How does that compare to packing paper cups, especially when you're in a group? I know it's more sanitary, but I'm sure there are more datapoints behind both of them. :)
another great video man! ill have to order a few, probably be easier than the boy scout status metal bowls i take camping haha. been tuning in since 2010 (and subscribed like 5 times because i keep forgetting my gmail passwords). oh and my girlfriend officially recognizes your voice now! have a great one nutn.
About to pull the trigger on this mug until I saw multiple reviews of this mug leaving an odor after using it with various things, or just as simple as washing it with dish soap. Nutnfancy didn't bring this up and I'm not sure if this is something they corrected with newer version or its it's the silicone itself. Can anyone leaf me in the right direction, as I want to purchase a few of these.
I try to backpack light and just weighed my bowl and cup. For a bowl I use a 4cup Gladware plastic bowl w/lid: cost about .50 cents, weight 1 3/8 oz. I was just batting it around the living room trying to hurt it and couldn't. It'll handle having boiling water poured into it with no problem. For my mug I use a used styrofoam Circle K xLarge coffee cup: cost .00 cents, weight 3/8 oz. Of course the styrofoam has to be packed carefully to not be crushed but that ain't hard to do. If i was worried about durability I'd just use a 2nd gladware bowl sans lid for a cup. total wt. 2 1/4 oz. If i was wanting to lose another oz of backpack weight I'd use a 2nd circle k coffee cup for a bowl. total wt. 3/4 oz.

love these kind of vids. Won't find a more in depth review of a folding cup anywhere! lol good stuff.

This is great! We are getting our camping/overlanding gear sorted for the fall so the timing is awesome!
Love SeaToSummit gear. I have the X-Series as my go to "mess kit" when out with the scouts. Comes in handy. Light weight. Takes up little room. And cleans easy.
"Keeps it hot" also translates to "Keeps hot food from hurting hand". Nice when you want to handhold your chow in camp.
Sea to summit makes a ton of good gear, their cups, bowls, plates and sinks are great for RV and heavy car side camping as well.
The only problem I found with my silicone mug is that when I drink coffee from it, the cup transfers some of its taste into the coffee, spoiling it's taste.
Some of the drink places in my area of CA are promoting "bring your own mug"
Right on man. These things are a must-have for building a good backpack for traveling/exploring. Got myself a compact med-kit with a bit of everything in the case it's needed. I might have to get the lime green cup + bowl, these are just cool.
You should be that excited because now I'm ha r to buy these for mine and my father's motorcycle trips. Too cool.
Love the run n gun and shooting platforms vids. However this is hands down a simple yet great video. I miss your backpacking adventutes and mountain side gear reviews. Thanks Again for fueling the project.
I love reviews like this Nutn! I remember when you told us to buy that shake cup, I have a few of them! Great review as always
I got a strainer in my kitchen utensils that uses the same concept as that XMug, the rubbery fold-up deal. It works great; I'm not surprised you like these XMugs too.
I've been using the XL bowl for almost two years. Perfect size for me. X plate is great as well. thanks for the review Nutn.
Very cool. I'd like to see some lids made for the x mugs.
I've used the X-bowl, mug and cup for a few years now.

Great review. Thanks. I use a similar bowl and cup set that I picked up at Wal-Mart. I love it.
I kept waiting on you to slam your hand down on the cup to show how fun it was to close.... My kids would be all over this!

Great video Nutn, very cool stuff for camping or backpacking.
Thanks for the Hot Tip Nut'n,
can't wait to get some.

My 8 year old has had a sea to summit collapsible mug for about two years now. It's still going strong.
I use these in a pack that my golden retriever carries for food and water bowls. I also have their aluminum bottomed cooking vessel and two sets of their titanium silverware sets. They make great stuff.
I love the Orikaso. The best this is how easy it is to clean!

I like the plates myself. Sea to summit rocks!
Woo a review of something I already have?! I'll watch it anyway
just an FYI nutun, I freaking love these accessory vids.
Thx man, well done.
great review Nutn'! I was wondering what backpack you are using for day hikes? just curious if you have changed from reliable Kelty. thanks again
Skip to 10:29 for the shortest (and most hilarious) Nutn' review EVER! =D
+higgins I'd rather watch the whole thing. But yea, great!
Interesting..
I normally just eat out of the same container I cooked it.
Thanks for the video
lol nuttin that's pretty funny. I bought the sea to Summit x mug and bowl in a kit which came in a netted bag. I have had it for a about 2 years now still going strong. you can make a really big cup of coffee in the cup lol. sea to Summit sleeping bags are good too. cheers from Australia....

There are pots and pans with metal bottoms made the same collapsible style. also tea kettles and other cooking items. Great for boats too.
I have been eyeing their X pot series. Same design as this cup, but with an anodized bottom for using it to cook with.
perfect !!
coolness.
thanks for the review vid nutn
I've used the x-bowl for years as a hiking water dish for my dog
nothing wrong with enthusiasm, we all use cups
Awesome! A folding cup!
You know what's crazy is if u have a space saver type of mug. You can use this product as a lid as well..
they make a pot too. Amazon.com has a 5 piece (2 mugs 2 bowls and a 2.8L pot)
I bought the large bowl for when i go hiking, great buy Imo. Think i got it at gander Mtn. Great products, think im going to have to buy this mug now, thanks Nutn.
Also you can use the bottom as a cutting board too, haven't tried it yet though. Just love how it collapses.
Sea to Summit now has a X-pot that you can cook/eat in it too.

Have you tried one of those DIY hiking stoves made from cans?
I'm up because I was watching top gear. Any tnp'rs watch top gear?
hell yeah!!
Cheers to that!
Nutn should go on a top gear style adventure.
Bowen Creer Hell yea!
Bowen Creer Im always watching top gear.
I'm wanting that neon green.
What about the nesting Stanley cup/bowl combo?? Still use?
The Sea to Summit hard plastic cup rim and bowl bottom are where you hold them to keep from burning your hands from hot foods.
These collapsible type vessels make me a little nervous. I've seen too many reviews where they collapse during use. Maybe this one less prone to do that?
I have these they work awesome! Sea to summit also has an x pot witch is also collapsible that is fantastic for backpacking. You should check it out! Great video

oh you love it now wait until the folds start getting holes in them that's what happened ours but before that it was great

got one for the dog, love it
Good review, that would be very handy. Wish I had it when I travelled Philippines =)
Does the collapsed xmug fit into the collapsed xbowl?
I was going to insist that he has finally lost his marbles. But then I remembered I have something exactly like that in the form of a Sea to Summit folding pot. so therefore, he is genius.
nutn, I have been using these for a while, found them in rei after I bought my gsi kettlist after your review the bigger ones also make excellent travel bowls for the dog

TNP: When will you do a review for compass / survival compass systems?
Are you going to show us a bug out kit I know you wouldn't bug out but I'd like to see the kit you've made.
Odd question but do you get your pop cans in mL or ounces in the states?
xXzeTaco49Xx Both. The ML are listed in parenthesis after the ounces.
you can use collapsible travel bowls or mug to water the dog in long walks
i might have to grab one for the cycle, and taking the dog out on the trail, i normally have to use my hand as a bowl for him.
Did you know they make a kettle too? I saw one at rei yesterday.
If i was worried about durability I'd just use a 2nd gladware bowl sans lid for a cup. total wt. 2 1/4 oz.
If i was wanting to lose another oz of backpack weight I'd use a 2nd circle k coffee cup for a bowl. total wt. 3/4 oz.
For packing seasoning I do this: can't post link so you search on youtube for a video 'Homemade, Ultralight Spice/Herb container' and see how to use straws to make durable seasoning containers for backpacking. Just save your kids McDonalds straws.
let's see some new patches nutn, do you have sticker versions?
I've had 2 lids break on my gsi spice containers. the threads seem to be a tad too long and puts pressure on the lid when screws down. it cracked all the way around.
Its funny, i just got done watching the movie The Judge, with the prosecutor Billy Bob Thornton played which had a folding cup, i thought it was cool. Never saw one before. Now you are doing review.
I'd be afraid of setting it down a little to hard and make a mess haha
Vargo Titanium Sierra Cup. Hard to find proper reviews, would deserve a nutn treatment! While at it, Vargo Bot Titanium as a companion to Sierra, oh that would make my day!
With all those individual packed spices and the scale, you're going to get busted for possession with intent to distribute.
nutnfancy youre too good eyeballing grams,go work with el chapo
Jajaja muy bueno!!!
Thoughts on the xpot?
I use a lot of pill bottles for small stuff.
1:25 I would kill for a bowl of salsa right now.
Just ordered one in Grey 😁
I wish the graduation marks were done in a different color than the rest of the rubber. I can't read mine without a flashlight and a magnifier. There's absolutely zero contrast.
