"How to retrofit recessed lighting" ... Shows half the install for new construction lights. 😂
Not even an install, just 2 (simple) demolition steps. Cut a ceiling and cut a small slat. 😂
I have to admit that the style of This Old House changed a lot over the years. I remember videos where they actually showed interesting projects for like 15 minutes which they actually did themselves instead of some contractor.
Kevin’s strength isn’t showing off his craftsmanship.
I think your definition of "retrofit" is quite different than mine.
that ceiling looks horrible, you might as well just pull it all down and add new drywall.
Mmmhm what I said gonna looks even worse now
I'm worried that popcorn paint that they just kicked into the air has asbestos.
Gee I was hoping to see a complete installation 🤔
LED wafer thin cut in lights are simpler. They even make LED retro fits for old can lights...
Anything would have been better than this video.
Have you found any of those wafer lights that are UL approved? I’m not a fan of installing something in someones house that isn’t UL approved.
@@MrSleepProductionsInc
Actually... just check my utilitech lights from lowes and it says, "conforms to UL std 1598"
So that's two so far.
It keeps deleting the link to lithonia lighting on Amazon.
Their description says UL recognized
@@phillipkirby502 thanks, I’ll check them out.
I was looking at those Utilitech's this weekend. How long have you had them and how are they working? For some reason LED lights don't last long in our house. I suspect it's a dirty grid.
@@NGinuity if they have the transformer boxes it shouldn’t matter
Ok so, you guys will never let me see the final product
Don't you just love cutting sheetrock? Over your head? :-)
Rotozip and old popcorn ceiling is a lethal combo. So much popcorn additive contained vermiculite and asbestos that it's impossible to know for sure. I'd be wearing a serious respirator and have my shop vac out for sure.
Appreciate how they've called back the old Ask This Old House electrician for some help.
Filmed in 2014.
Now where is the part how you retrofit recessed lighting??
Is the popcorn texture being removed? How are you planning to match the patch? I’m assuming the ceiling will be repainted. It would be nice to see the entire portion of that part of the project.
Thanks for half the video.
So what does it look like at the end?
I know this is an old video, I remember watching it years ago, but why on earth are your lights so big??
Spotlights (as we call them here in 🇬🇧) are small and attractive. Subtle. Compact. Neat. Yet still kick out huge amounts of light. GU50 types.
Even the “new” smaller ones he shows are still 5” in diameter. I don’t get it 🤷🏻♂️
That's a great idea, gents! Good to know, thanks!👍👍👊
1:04 1:30 That guy likes it to stick his fingers right into power tools
Stick to painting, Richard
@@jwp09 Did your mom allow you to go onto UA-cam?
She sure did Rich. Wanted me to tell you to work on your left hand cut-in
I'm sure you do too Rich.
I'm an electrician and I hate this. From retrofit inserts to snap-in pucks, I can't remember the last time I did ceiling surgery. I can't even remember the last time I installed cans... with the new high quality flat LED pucks that are out, it no longer makes sense. They even make them large enough to snap into the holes for existing 6" trims.
Excellent Guy's 👍
When I extensively remodeled a residence I purchased I installed dozens of recessed lighting fixtures when the drywall was off the framing. Recently one of the 4" recessed fixtures in the bedroom on a circuit with several others stopped working. There is simply no power to the socket. I can only assume that a wire nut, which was installed by a licensed electrician, connecting the fixture to the Romex is no longer making contact. There is simply no way to repair it short of tearing out ceiling drywall to reach the fixture junction box.
You should be able to service the recessed light from below by removing the lightbulb/LED and finding the disconnected hot (with the electricity off at the panel)
@@toddjasper1
The 4" recessed fixtures are IC type. There is no access from the inside of the can to the junction box, which is on the outside of the can .
@@avsystem3142 it may appear that way but any pot light can is supposed to be "readily accessible" after installed and drywall is on. You should be able to take the trim out and access the attached junction box from a cover that's held on but a spring loaded lever.
Is there any chance you have a model number for the IC cans?
@@jwp09 Thanks, I'll take another look at it.
Thats not retroffiting... Thats tossing the old one and replacing it.
Better to just get a pancake box that is like a half in thick.
Kinda obvious!!
That's a lot of work if one is replacing a lot of lights...
Well, that tells me nothing.
Not really a "how to" if you dont show "how to"...
Can lights are a thing of the past. Its sad to see people still installing them! they make led slim lights that have the low voltage transformer separate!!
This video was made 100 years ago….better yet it was made when the dinosaurs were running around…nowadays there are better recessed lights that you don’t have to brake your ceiling …..not only that my wife would kill me if I brake the ceiling…just make a round hole about 6 inches around and install your lights….
What a wast of time for those people. But it is what it is.
They get paid by hour i guess? Ever seen pictures of Chinese sewing factories?
ToH y'all losing a step.
First
Why are all the videos only a minute now? So annoying... 🙄
They keep rehashing and snipping out other old episodes to create the illusion this is new material.
