it was very frustrating. He kept scrolling around so fast and I wanted to take a longer look at certain areas. I know this whole city very well. I've walked and driven on most of the main streets.
Rideau BECOMES Wellington. I would happily do this again with you with images of today of some of the buildings shown. I appreciate your enthusiasm but you've got some work to do 😉
That sounds great. I wish a group of people from Ottawa could get together and create a great video using that map. It wasn't just the narrative that was bad, but he kept scrolling around the city so quick, I got dizzy watching it.
Stumbled across this video and while I appreciate your motive and effort - I suggest you cut out the narrative commentary until you do more homework on Ottawa and knowing at least how to pronounce names. Cringe worthy to hear someone from afar make such a running mono log. Sorry - try better on next one.
9:40 - the street car went as far as Britannia beach 10km west. The guy keeps calling the Ottawa River the canal ???? 😢 In 2 minutes he s gonna show us the 1st Apple Store on Re Doo st
Very poor analysis of this well known map of the capital of Canada. You mis-identified many sites including calling the old City Hall our State House - Ottawa and Canada do not have any State houses.
I've lived in Ottawa my whole life can name almost every main street there. I wish so much I could explore this map myself and see what the Billings Bridge area looked like where I grew up. Of course it was all farms and considered "out in the country", but I'd still love to see the place on the earth that I grew up. Can you give me the link where I can explore it myself please?
Loved the map! Just a quick point and a question. As you look for the Stonehouse & Chamberlin carriage works (at 12:44) you reference the waterway and "church" in the background which are actually the Ottawa River and the Parliament of Canada buildings. Moving forward in time but before you actually pinpoint the location of the carriage works you hover your mouse directly over the Parliament of Canada buildings that are right on the Ottawa River. Hope that makes sense. My question is whether this map is available digitally? I would absolutely love to spend some time with it myself (I live in Ottawa).
Thank you for this Adam. It is also easy to locate exact addresses if you check out a current google map, which you can compare to this layout, with the help of the rivers & canal. Yes "eau" in Rideau is pronounced O, as is the word eau, meaning water in french. Many of us are bilingual here. I live & work in real estate here & love to see how things have evolved. Thanks again.
speaking as an Ottawa boy, you did a great job... well done!.. a lot of what you showed (streets etc) are still around. you should visit! you probably know the city better than most!
Enjoyed the map. You aren't a Ottawa native are you. Lol. Re: Name pronounce. Suggestion drop the small video of yourself reading your script - it's quite distracting. Rideau sounds same as Ree-doe but when pronounced no pause in the name. Thanks for the link to the map!
Ya I'm not a native bu just a map and history enthusiast. Ya I've been getting a few people telling me that reading the script is distracting, but I mean to be honest its ALOT of information soo I'm working through this process. Thanks for watching.
Brian Beattie PLEASE PLEASE WATCH CTV OR CBC NEWS IN OTTAWA FOR A WEEK AT LEAST TO LEARN HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE STREETS.....OR COMPARE YOUR OLD MAP TO A GOOGLE MAP. MAYBE CALL SOMEONE IN TOURIST Ottaw and run your lines past them. It will bring the credit you deserve for wanting to explore this wonderful map p
At 14:42 you are looking for Stonhouse on Wellington and you found one at the end of sparks street and wellington but at 15:13 you have the mouse right beside the real building just on the left tbe building have small smoke coming out and the building on the picture in the background is the west block building so stonhouse is in the connor of wellington and Lyon street
...in the 50s i lived on wellington st just east of booth on the south side. This was between the good compannions lodge and wellington st public school. It was a 3 story apt building i would like to locate. Was born there. It was on the south side of lebretton flats. Believe it was 123 wellington st ottawa.ca
Fascinating. In 1828 my great great grand parents farmed in Nepean (now west Ottawa, but the earliest part settled). In 1835 they moved 60 miles up river to settle at Ile du Grand Calumet, Pontiac, Quebec. Very remote wilderness in those days. Across the river from Bytown (Ottawa) on the Quebec side of the river Aylmer and Hull were also being settled, mainly for the lumber industry. Philemon Wright came there in 1900 to start business.
Great video!!! I can tell you are not from Ottawa but I bet we'd all mess up names too if we had to comment on some other place. To all the critical people - give the guy a break; if you spend time watching this it was because you didn't have this map yourself so he was doing you a favour. I it was fun watching this and very informative!!! Good job! Thank you.
The graphics are great. I appreciate your attempt to put this all together. The narrative is choppy and the pronunciation of several place names is incorrect. Keep the graphics and do a little more prep with the narrative. Run this past someone who lives and study the history of the area and then do a redo. It just needs a little polishing but this is a good starting point. There is lots of great information here. Thanks for trying to put this all together.
That is a great video, I have actually repaired the rips and tears and restored this map! It's amazing how many of the street names are consistent with what exists today. The couple that have changed (Maria and King St) are because they are named after people that weren't alive at this time. Also the rail line at the top left of the map has been replaced with a highway, the manager in my office building says his house which is beside the highway contains railroad ties in the framing of the house. I offer reprints of the repaired map if any of your community is interested in it.
Our (new) Ottawa architectural firm would be interested in a copy of this map, or a high definition file might be even better. You can find me/my name on LinkedIn where we can start a conversation. Thank you in advance.
Philomon Wright: Philomen is not "fylomin" it's "fill-o-men". Brutal pronunciation. Also, Ottawa isn't "half-way between Ontario and Kingston". Painful to watch while you keep jerking the map around. Is there a link to the map?
Maybe study a modern map first and figure out the layout of the city before jumping back in time. Maybe visit here for a weekend and learn how to pronounce the names. This was tough to listen to. Appreciate the enthusiasm though.
Dude.. I would take this video down.. it's so generic it's pushing plagiarism ALSO!!! all the pronunciation mistakes makes you look like a you don't know anything about the subject. I wish I could take my view back in don't want you paid for this
Cool map but you should have summoned someone from Ottawa to narrate the story. 🙄 And what you called north is actually west... you could refer to a recent map or even your phone to figure that out. I recommend reposting this with a nice selection of music from the era instead. 😁
As a resident of Ottawa, born here, this video description is brutal to watch.
no kiddng... geeez .. he knows nothing of the city!!
Same here Ree-doo canal almost killed me 😂

I hereby offer to redo the narrative of this video, free of charge.
That sounds great. I wish a group of people from Ottawa could get together and create a great video using that map. It wasn't just the narrative that was bad, but he kept scrolling around the city so quick, I got dizzy watching it.
People who live in Ottawa are over here wondering where the Re-do canal is.
I drove all day trying to find the Ree-doo canal lol
The first canal wasn't done well so the Re-Do canal fixed it.

Good to know, thanks!
Liam Smith it bothered me to a point that I stopped watching the video....thank you Liam
Rideau > French > in English. Noun. curtains curtain drapes blinds draperies drapery. tambour. The Rideau Falls that look like curtains.
Rideau St is east of the canal. Not south. The map faces west.
Also, its Albert St. Not Alberta.

Will you be showing videos of Overbrook and Vanier when there was farmland before all the houses were built?
How can I get my hands on this map ??
Algonquin** not Algonquian (linguistic group)

Oh okay, my mistake. Thank you for clarifying, also here is a copy of the map for you to explore: www.loc.gov/item/75696739/
Check out City of Ottawa e-maps where you can view several overlays back to 1920's

Actually rideau is curtain in French, the Rideau falls gave the impression of a curtain to the early explorers, hence the name Rideau

Those waterways were lumber chutes to get lumber around the Chaudier Falls. They are used for hydroelectric power generation.
It's not his fault the names of the area are difficult to pronounce, if you haven't heard the proper pronunciation.
Should do one of what it looks like today
Who is this guy? Is he Canadian at all? Red-Do?
etien bruel? I thougth it was Étienne Brûlé. reedoo canal? I thought Rideau.
