Great explanation Kody. The relief cuts are a huge help here in Northern Vermont. Can't thank you enough for your well spoken knowledge and building advice. Hope all is well
At 2:50, it appears that you will be putting the 1-1/2" decking on the ledger but UNDER the top drip cap, which might serve to direct water to the back side of the ledger. Should the top drip be bent down to cover the top and a bit of the side of the ledger, then the decking installed on top of the drip?
Good question. New doors have a flange like a window which is perfect to prevent water ingress. Finishing… either go tight with decking to the underside of the door. OR … if you leave your deck down a bit… then determine what’s best for you. Black flashing works.
Thanks for the video! I am going to be attaching a deck to the back of my house. The house is wrapped in 3/4" foam. Is it fine to screw the ledger board directly on top.of the foam to the rim joist? I run a similar UA-cam channel to yours so it's great to see how you're doing. Keep it up! Where are you based out of? Thanks!
Do you leave the building paper un-taped behind the ledger? Or, can you tape the building paper to the rubber flashing horizontally to seal the paper to the flashing?
Thanks for the video. Is it the same procedure if your going to install a covered porch on vinyl siding? I am going to do my backyard and I dont want the water to ruin my house.
Do you angle the drip cap on top and bottom to a few degrees off of 45° just in case water doesn't pool because drip cap doesn't create significant run off, just like the bottom of a window sill has a 3 to 5 pitch out for drainage
I see conflicting instructions on this... most install the top drip cap to go over the ledger board but under the decking boards. This drip cap looks like it will end up on top of the deck surface. I don't even know what to believe any more
If you installed the last deck board overtop, you would need a completely flat drip cap. The point of the bevel edge is to make sure the water does indeed run away from the house. That’s why we do ours this way.

Quality video on installing a ledger! Thanks!
Thank you! Apparently they have spacer blocks too. Plastic ones. Might be something to check out at some time.

I don’t know the best answer to this. I’ve seen people do it both ways.
Double ledger, one half drilled for lags. More meat for stringer ties. Great video!
Thanks!
Won't water sit on bottom drip cap
Yes, you should elevate the ledger so it is not sitting in that water.
What is done below the door to above the deck for water diversion and finishing this area?

Wonderful information. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful

I would avoid attaching it on top of the foam but if you do I would lag bolt it.
I’m from Alberta, Canada. What’s your channel name? Where you from?
Great Work mate
Thank you.
Great job my friend
Appreciate the good feedback!
Unless you have a waterfall, those relief cuts are useless. Moisture will just wick into it.
You have a point
Where did u purchase your drip cap from do not see it in the links below?
I don't get what are relieve cuts? When u screw ledger into house won't that make an opening?
its to let water to drain out if it gets in, you can also add a few galvanized washers behind it to leave a space for drainage.
@@powshredder3716 im saying but what does it look like tho? i couldn't see in video
@@Eastbaypisces it's just a small kerf cut maybe an 1/8 th inch deep . Putting washers works better though IMO.
Thanks for everyone’s input! I think there’s footage showing me making those kerf cuts.
@@uptokode yea i see it now my bad

You shouldn’t tape building paper on the horizontal plain. You can potentially trap moisture.
How do you install a drip cap on an existing stucco covered house.. Easy on a vinyl covered house.
Do you work for IKEA?
No I don’t. They’ve never even said hi or thank you for all my videos. A-holes. 😂😂
@@uptokode No kidding! Butt-munches! You'd think they'd at least say thank you!!🙄🤨🤣
Thanks for the video. Is it the same procedure if your going to install a covered porch on vinyl siding? I am going to do my backyard and I dont want the water to ruin my house.
But how do you fasten the ledger to the house
Do a video of installing flashing on an existing deck
Do you angle the drip cap on top and bottom to a few degrees off of 45° just in case water doesn't pool because drip cap doesn't create significant run off, just like the bottom of a window sill has a 3 to 5 pitch out for drainage
You got any videos on installing siding on ICF? Specifically hardi or something similar. Couldn't find anything decent on youtube
PT ledger?
Yes
I always use ground contact for optimal longevity
A video made by 'up to Kode' with no discussion about deck code. Did he follow code?
Nice vid... but why doesn't anyone make a video of a ledger installation to a rim joist for a covered porch???

Judging by your accent I would say you get a lot of snow where your from.
Haha. Canada. Not tons of snow in our area but that’s relative I guess
you look like a younger Dana White with hair
Sounds like a Nova Scotian accent lol
Luckily for YOU that it had a drip cap but not for an uninformed viewer trying to learn how to properly install a ledger. ???
