  • I wanted a budget macro lens so I bought the 7Artisans 60mm F2.8 Macro II. I tested the lens for insect macro photography and I am quite satisfied with the macro lens performance.

    I love the way Robin casually holds the camera in one hand and a flash in the other and somehow produces the most amazing photos, even with a manual focus lens. Macro Master!

      Thanks Ian, you are too kind! The technique is not the best, but it is quite versatile, I can move my light around and make it come from anywhere I want!

    No fair that Robin can go out in January and find the most amazing insects/arachnids meanwhile it’s like -10 Fahrenheit in Boston and I can’t even go outside to take pictures.

    Amazing video as always, Robin. I totally agree about the very well chosen music for your videos. This is a very interesting lens, I don't have any macro lens yet and certainly it is nice to have a budget option. Your results with flash technique are really good!

    I have a TTArtisans 40mm macro, on a Sony APS-C and it has provided hours and hours of enjoyment and yielded some amazing results…so I totally get your reasoning behind buying this Robin. Anyone with even a passing curiosity regarding macro photography will find that any $100 macro lens is a small but good investment.

    Thank you Robin. Good presentation as usual.
    If we look at full frame macro lenses, most of them are about 100mm and none particularly fast. This is to produce a useful DoF.
    On MFT 60mm is probably a good compromise for macro. I notice the lens does have the macro scale markings alongside the focus distance.
    And that flash snood diffuser, cool 😎

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому

      Thanks Jeff. Well for macro purposes, we don't shoot wide open much, and the closer we get to the subject the more we stop down the F-number for more depth of field. So I am ok if we don't get bright aperture, as I mostly shoot F5.6 or narrower for my macro shots.
      However, the bright aperture helps if you use the lens in a non-macro environment, for example, shooting portraits!

  • @kagemushanz
    @kagemushanz Рік тому +1

    I love this lens, it's fantastic value for money. I've found it much easier to work with than the Olympus 30mm, especially for focus accuracy and working distance. Using it with an E-M10 Mark4 and don't weight of the lens is still comfortably balanced.
    Accidentally moving the aperture ring can be a little bit of a nuisance but not a big deal

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому

      The 60mm definitely is easier to work with if you need more distance from your subject, for example shooting a bug!

      2x magnification is definitely a huge plus! However I don' need it, as my bugs here in Malaysia are not so tiny. And I don't want to just shoot the eyes of the insects, I want to show the body too!

    Good stuff Robin, I have the 60mm Oly lens, and can not afford the new 90 mil macro. I bought some dried beetles and bugs on Amazon (unethical??) But I thought about putting them on leaves in the backyard to practice, and my kitty won't eat them! Cheers!

    When using my Olympus camera, I can’t get my ISO to be set at 200 without it automatically setting the exposure to -3.0. Is that how you are shooting it or are you able to alter some settings to be able to adjust the exposure?

    Do you ever try to find out the names and habits of some of these bizarre little fellas?
    I get into mushrooms (as a photographic subject) when they come up down here and am fascinated by their weird looks and life cycle. Using a sigma 105, f2.8, and a led light with diy modifier.
    Cheers!

  • @jianfeiwang1654

    As always, excellent video. I am wondering how you made focus ajustement when you hold off camera flash in another hand? You put down that flash to focus or just use one hand? That is my concern when considering a manual macro lens. Also, Laowa has a 50mm macro lens too, seems better in all aspects than this one, also higher in price of course. Wondering do you have a chance te review that one? Maybe contact Laowa?😊

    • @emudojo

    • @Photo_CB
      @Photo_CB Рік тому +2

      @@emudojo Yes, for macro its often better to focus by moving closer to and further from from your subject rather than focussing the lens.

      I generally do use AF when I shoot with the Olympus 60mm. But if I go all the way to full magnification, in some situations, manual focusing is more effective.
