    I've started watching, and following, your videos about a year ago. I've been intrigued by them. I actually bought an Olympus digital camera last August. It's an E-600 that came with the 14-42 and 40-150 lens. I bought it used, but it only has 900 on the shutter count. I only paid $60 US. I'm a Canon full frame user as my main camera, but watching your videos made me look for an Olympus. I've taken some amazing shots it. I posted them on my Instagram page and got a lot of feedback from them. I'm surprised with the smaller sensor, the capabilities are great! Keep up the great work! Craig from the US.

    I think anyone shooting macro photography with micro four-thirds would love to get their hands on that new Olympus 90mm lens, but it is far too expensive for most people to ever consider. An excellent compromise is the Olympus 60 mm lens, which basically matches the manual focus lens that you have but still gives autofocus capability. It only cost 1/3 the price of the 90mm lens at around $400 US brand new. I believe I bought mine through one of the Olympus refurbished sales for around $300 a couple of years ago. Money well spent.

    Thanks for the great micro 4/3 video and the excellent insect portraits.
    I do a lot of close-up and macro work (pathology, flat artwork, flowers, insects, coins, jewelry, paper money).
    For my 6x7cm medium format cameras, I use a macro lens and extension tubes.
    For my full-frame and APS-C cameras, I use macro lenses, extension tubes, bellows, lens reversal rings, and supplemental close-up lenses.
    Up to now, I have not needed the extra magnification a micro 4/3 camera would give me. However, I will keep it mind just in case my needs change.

    Hi Robin.. beautiful work as always. I do remember your original Insect macro video from a few years ago and I was always curious how you set up your camera settings as well as the remote flash system. I remember in the 70s when the OM2 film camera came out and the factory rep demonstrated TTL flash work to us (I was working in a camera shop) and it seemed like such advanced tech,,and then Minolta came out with wireless TTL flashes--Mind Blown!! If you circle back to macro stuff in the future seeing a run down of your settings would be a treat.
    P.S.-- Having Olympus keep flash compatibility from past system generations is remarkable..NOBODY does that!!

    Great samples. I got interested in Olympus in 1973 for macro photography as a primary purpose. It’s a great system. I have many macro lenses including the 60mm macro I found used for about half price. Plus a Raynox 250 and Mieke extension tubes I’ve been able to get to extreme magnifications.
    It may be strange to most people to relate the ratio 1:1 or 1:2 etc so your percentage is more relatable.
    I point out to novices that when images were being submitted for publication, the ratio 1:1 for example, was used by editors to lay out specimen photos in proper relation to one another according to actual size. So the film being 36mm x 24mm could be sized correctly along side a digital image from micro four thirds 1:1 at 17.3mm x 13 mm.
    Being able to publish a diagram of antique coins or stamps for example, showing actual size represented, requires knowledge of the process to know what magnification was used relative to 1:1.

I have Olympus 60mm macro, similar Kenko extension rings, a Raynox 250 and now the OM System 90mm macro. My lighting is both Flash and LED as well as natural lighting at usually a high ISO. My flash lighting is a customised system using Nissin Flash lights and transmitter with both a fixed assembly on camera and the option to detach the flash very quickly and mount on a ground spike or hand held. • @elm9056
    @elm9056 Рік тому +2

    I'm using the Olympus 60mm macro lens. If necessary, I have an old Minolta bellows, which has up to 200 mm stepless extension and three old special Minolta macro/micro lenses for the bellows. Somebody did me build a Nikon adapter at the end of the bellows (makes a Nikon bayonet instead a Minolta bayonet at the end of the bellows ). With a Nikon to Olympus adapter (Nikon lenses on Olympus camera bodies), I can use the Olympus m43 camera bodies. With that I can magnify up to 10 times (If I would apply the crop factor as done in this video, it will be up to 20 times). But at this scale the depth of field is so tiny, that a tripod and the macro sledge of the bellows are obligatory. Moving creatures practically can't be photographed at such a large magnification.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому

      I also think that having too much magnification is counter-productive as the shooting process become infinitely more challenging. I usually don't go to full 100% magnification, unless necessary.

  • @sealand000
    @sealand000 Рік тому +9

    Equivalence is extremely misleading when it comes to macro photography. 100% (or 1:1) simply means that the real object will be projected the same size on the sensor. For instance, 10mm of the real object will project 10mm on the sensor. 200% means that 10mm will be 20mm on the sensor. There is no reason to use equivalence, in my opinion. But thanks for another useful video, as usual.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому +2

      We need a reference, and in this case 35mm format becomes the reference. Same as 25mm lens, while true focal length is 25mm, we say it is equivalent to 50mm in 35mm format, so there is consistency when we measure/compare reach and framing. Similarly with magnification, same 100% magnification, but with 2x crop, you get twice more magnification in 35mm format.
      Unless of course, you don't care about a reference, then you talk about compact cameras having 3mm-24mm lens which in no way anyone would know what kind of width or length they represent, unless someone clearly stated (equals to 28mm to 200mm zoom)

    • @anibarro
      @anibarro Рік тому +2

      @@robinwong I think you are wrong here. Let’s say first that the minimum focus distance depends on the distance between the lens and the sensor, and it’s the same regardless of the sensor size. At the closest distance, with a m43 you will get a smaller portion of the object on the frame due to the 2x crop, but the magnification will still be the same as on a full frame sensor. On the full frame you will get a bigger part of the object on the frame, but just because the sensor is bigger, not because there is less magnification.
      We might be fooled about thinking how many pixels a part of the object will end up covering, but we have to ignore that, as this is related to the sensor pixel count and not the magnification

    Incredible photos!
    Question about magnifying ratio: is it really fair to say "35mm equivalent magnification"? Equivalent focal length is doubled when using m43, of course, but I don't understand why magnification doubling is a thing. If you're recording 17.3mm wide image filling up a 17.3mm wide sensor, to me that's still a 1:1 ratio, no?

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому

      Not when you take 35mm as a reference, so 17mm vs 35mm, that is double the magnification. Similarly, we talk about Olympus 25mm lens, while 25mm is the true focal length, but we also admit that it is equivalent to 50mm in 35mm format. Simple as that, so we have a common, standardized photography language.

By definition "Macro" is the technical term for absolutely distortion-free 1-to-1 imaging, suitable for scientific or forensic analysis. So, Robin, by definition although beautiful, your hight-magnification pictures (especially those taken with a distorting extension tube) are the very antithesis of what you're calling "macro", and you lose the bet 🤣 😉 😜.

      Macrophotography or Photomacrography consists of images captured in the reproduction ratio range of 1:1 to 35:1.
      The reproduction ratio is the size of the actual subject relative to the size of the subject’s image on the surface of the film or on the surface of the digital camera’s image sensor.
      A reproduction ratio of 1:1 means that the image and the subject are the same size (life-size).
      A reproduction ratio of 35:1 means that the image formed in the camera is magnified so that it is 35 times larger than the size of the actual object being photographed (35 times life-size).
      The 1:1 to 35:1 macrophotography or photomacrography range is not carved in stone. Some photographers define the range as 1:2 to 40:1. Others define it as greater than life-size up to 20 times life-size.
      Photomicrography is capturing images through a microscope. These images usually have a reproduction ratio that ranges from 16:1 to 450:1. This ratio range is also not carved in stone.
