Ohhh the childhood memory! I love the shocking colors from the old times! In modern historical movies everything is grey filtered, the colours no more so brilliant...

Same here on the VHS tape. Watched this multiple times. So colorful. That scene where they advance into the fray on horseback, that quiet rumbling is so cool. I remember so much of the dialogue too. "Yon addle-pated oaf..." "Happy Islands?"

Knights of the Round Table is an important film in my life as it was the film that got me interested in history and I wanted to learn more about dark ages and the legend of King Arthur.

  • @Peregrin3

The problem with more modern adaptions of Arthur is that they either try to make King Arthur more historical and fail abysmally like that Roman Version of King Arthur in 2004 or they follow all the stereotypes of medieval England and make everything dark, colorless, and depressive and they completely miss the whole point, Arthurian legends were the high fantasy of the middle ages, it was the clash between the glory and virtue of Camelot and the Darkness that constantly battled against it, I absolutely love all the color in this movie, the knights actually look like chivalric knights instead of common mercenaries like in movies like Excalibur, I was really not a fan of how dull and boring the colors and costumes are, I actually much-perferred First Knight which despite its flaws at least managed to portray the Knights of the Round Table as it should be. This movie is awesome but one of the few things I wish were different was that there is very little in the way of the supernatural in this movie when Arthurian Legends are full of it. In any case, this is still one of my favorite movies about Arthur.

Knights of the Round Table - They are elite warriors sworn to uphold the values of faith, loyalty, courage, and honor.
Arthur - The leader of the Knights of the Round Table, declared the rightful king of Britain and ruling from the shining city of Camelot and making a kingdom where the magical and the Christian could live in peace.
Kay -- Arthur's foster brother and the first knight to swear fealty to him. Distinguished himself for his valiance at the Battle of Baden (which got him that scar).
Bedivere -- One of the first knights to swear loyalty to Arthur and is one of his staunchest supporters. Also fought at Baden, losing his arm in the process. After that, he doesn't see much action, instead acting as an administrator and adviser to Arthur.
Lancelot - Arthur's second-in-command and Guinevere's champion, He's the son of King Ban, Husband of Elaine and Father of Galahad
Tristan - A Cornish knight and the nephew of one of Arthur's early supporters. Held in high regard in the courts of Camelot, especially among the maidens due to his sensitivity and skill with a harp.
Percival -- A Roman-British knight who's the son of Pellinore, one of King Arthur's earliest supporters.
Bors - A Frankish knight whose father fought alongside Arthur at Baden, He's the Son of King Bors and Evaine and the Older brother of Lionel.
Lionel -- A brave and trustworthy Knight of Arthur, He's the Bors the Younger and the younger son of King Bors of Gaunnes (or Gaul) and Evaine.
Dagonet - Originally Arthur's court jester, but was knighted after saving Arthur's life. He still maintains his attitude, though: jokey, sarcastic, and willing to make jests about anyone, even the king.
Gawain - The head of the Orkney clan, the brothers hailing from the northern regions of Britain and nephew of Arthur and the Elder brother of Gareth and Agravain.
Gareth -- The youngest of the Orkney brothers who enters the service of the king anonymously, He's the younger brother of Gawain and Agravain.
Galahad - A newer knight, the son of Lancelot and Elaine of Corbenic, born when his mother drugged Lancelot.
Palamedes -- A knight who came from the Holy Lands, hearing of King Arthur's legacy. He often rides with Lancelot, Gawain, and Tristan due to a longstanding rivalry with Tristan.
Agravain -- The second eldest of the Orkney clan from Northern Britain. He's the middle brother of Gawain and Gareth.

We're knights of the round table
    We dance whenever we're able
We do routines and chorus scenes
    With footwork impeccable
We dine well here in Camelot
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot
We're knights of the round table
    Our shows are formidable
But many times we're given rhymes
    That are quite unsingable
    We're opera mad in Camelot
We sing from the diaphragm a lot
War we're tough and able, quite indefatigable
Between our quests we sequin vests
    And impersonate Clark Gable
It's a busy life in Camelot
I have to push the pram a lot

yep. and this was actually probably more accurate. the medievals really liked their colour and heraldry.
nowadays idiot hollywood directors seem to be uniformly operating under the impression that history was full of weirdos running around in studded leather and covered in shit.

Great Medieval battle scene, King Arthur's cavalry charge appears modelled on that in Olivier's Henry V filmed 9 years earlier. I don't want to spoil it but part of it has apparently been duplicated. The knights charge under the same tree twice. But thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless. The film itself was largely faithful to Morte d'Arthur as told by Thomas Malory.

Arthur: "Does each man know the plan?"
"I don't!" came a shout from the rear ranks. Arthur turns around. Sir-Was-Formerly-Not-Appearing-In-this-Film-But-Now-Is raised his hand. "I don't know plan! I wasn't here!"

Good battle. Great costumes. Only thing is that Arthur is supposed to die along with Mordred.

    • @evangelosnikitopoulos
      @evangelosnikitopoulos 3 роки тому

This is the first battle where Arthur defeats the rebellious chieftains of Britain (the movie opted to make Mordred the running villain from the beginning). In the final battle, they both die as in Le Morte d'Arthur.

    • @spencermanning9994
      @spencermanning9994 2 роки тому

@@evangelosnikitopoulos Actually, in this movie, Mordred (or "Modred" in this case) actually escapes, and Arthur dies, but not before reconciling with Lancelot and asking him to throw Excalibur into the lake since its stained with the blood of his people or something like that. It's Lancelot who ends up killing Mordred in the end.
(He also gets saved by his horse. Hell yeah!)

I doubt the knights would have known much better. It wouldn't be the first time a detachment of knights charged their allies ranks. Cfr. Woeringen 1288. But knights were preferably not killed in battle so for them it was sort of 'safe' in battle. But that faded in the later middle ages.

3:43-4:00: I like how this scene basically plays out like this:
Mordred: "Hey, everyone! I totally just decapitated Arthur with my lance! (elot.... I'm sorry, but also.. I'm not sorry) I win!"
Arthur: "The fu- no you didn't, you jackass! I'm clearly still alive!"
Mordred: "Oh, sh*t. Well, time for plan B".
    (*Archer shoots Arrow*)
    Lancelot: (*Blocks Arrow*) "Nope"
    Mordred: "DAMMIT!"
