  • Hey everyone! Join me as I introduce my latest car project and also cover my installation of a new rear tail panel on this vintage BMW!
    When I purchased this 1970 BMW 2002 about two years ago, it had the wrong style rear tail panel with the rectangular style brake lights instead of the round ones. Either the car had a fender bender and this was all they could find at the time, or maybe someone actually thought the rectangular style of the later models was an "upgrade". While I actually really like the later model rear end cars, for this 1970 model, I had to go back to the "roundie" rear tail panel.
    So about a year and a half ago, I cut off the old year end and purchased a brand new rear "roundie" style panel. The car mainly just sat in my garage ever since. In this video, I attempt to install the new rear panel in just three evenings of work. My goal was to get it ready for the upcoming BMW Cars and Coffee event here in the Portland, Oregon area. Do I success in my endeavors? Watch the video to find out!

    ** For my grinder, I really recommend my Harbor Freight HERCULES
    Corded 4-1/2 In. 11 Amp Professional Paddle Switch Angle Grinder. This thing is awesome and has tons of power. With grinders, it's the amps that matter. Don't mess around with the little 5 or 6 amp grinders, get something with a manly amount of torque. As far as what you can easily buy on Amazon, I would recommend the Dewalt DWE402 11-Amp Angle Grinder. It's build to last and has great reviews.

      Thanks man! It was actually a 1970 BMW 2002. I was originally a roundie that someone else had converted to square brake lights at some point.... I think in the '80s.

    Nice job, though the trunk floor is going to need attention at the rear edge. Always liked 2002s since our neighbor got one back in 1970 over so.

    Awesome video! I live in Seattle and have a 76 I’m slowly reviving... wondering if you would be interested in parting with those square taillights? Let me know and keep up the good work!

    This is the video I needed to see! I am in the process of converting mine to a roundie. my roundie is a goner but the tail panel is going to get used on my square tail. Don't judge! Did you cut directly in the indent mark on the tail? This will be my first time cutting and welding but I am going to practice on some scrap parts. By the way, you got a sub from me! Thanks for this video.

    • @stevenandchey6172

      Also, it looks like you cut the whole panel out. The part you cut out that protrudes, is that where the panel meets the trunk floor? Any tips and/or suggestions when doing this? I will be cutting my roundie and square tail for this swap.

    • @ProductCred
      @ProductCred  3 роки тому

      @@stevenandchey6172 Hey Steven! Correct. I cut the entire panel out. At first, I only cut out the top section, but I ended up cutting out the entire panel later. For the sides, I cut about 2 inches from the actual seam. Then I went back and carefully trimmed, with the side of the grinder... feathering the metal until to leave enough to weld back on. It's still not perfect. Stay tuned for my next video where I'm going to be finishing it!

    1970???? How can a 70 have square taillights?

    • @ProductCred
      @ProductCred  2 роки тому

      I think someone converted it to square back end sometime in the 1980's. They did some crazy stuff back then. I put it back to a roundie.... like it should have been.
