Antique Farmall tractor pumping flood water | Here we go again…

  • We got 3.5”-4.5” of rain over the weekend so we had to break out the old Farmall M to do some pumping. We can handle the rain we got so far but with more rain on the way, we decided to run the pumps to get the ditches down so they can handle the coming rains. This tractor turned 80 years old this year and still runs like a champ!

Dad started farming in 1946 with a new "H" and traded up to an "M" in 1956; what a difference. He had it overhauled a few years later and it would pull a 3' 16s plow all day long in 4th gear. I loved pulling our stalk chopper on a crisp fall night and watching a red glow on the muffler. I sure miss those days, but most of all miss my dad.

That old Farmall, like so many of its contemporaries, was built conservatively. Nothing is heavily stressed, the governor won't let it rev over 1400 if I recall, and the compression is like 6.5:1. She won't do anything big or fast, but she'll do everything, given enough time. Newer tractors are designed closer to the limits, and it shows in how quickly they wear out. They can do more, and faster, but not for as long.

These are the original machines from the 1880's. The barb wire machines are 1903 to 1950's. These machines run hundreds of feet of wire every day. We have been wet here also! Stay safe!!!!!

And a idea for checking on things when you can't be there is a long range drone camera that can throw a long wireless signal so you can leave it parked then call it and turn it on and look at what you need to check on, then fly it back to a safe place and park it till you need it later.

Flat belt is not outdated technology, there is about 10 year old hydro power plant not far from my house that has two alternators about 350kW driven by flat belts. I don't think that there is anything else that would be capable of transmission of such power while providing high transmission ratio.

You could replace that m110 with a stationary power plant. Find an old scrapyard motor and transmission, build a cradle, and just haul it out on the balespears when you need it.
From experience, old VW ALH engines and 4cyl Toyota cars/forklifts from the early 2000s are great power plants.
If its an air cooled deutz, it'll be absolutely worth picking up, even if it only ever runs a pump. Those things are incredibly effecient

I hope you appreciate the "education" you are getting by being a farmer. I am 70 YO, grew up on a cattle ranch and 5000 tree apple orchard in New Mexico and the lessons, physical and mental strength, and work ethic I learned has lasted a lifetime. I was successful doing everything I have set my mind to. The "M" was a dream machine for me as a kid. We ran John Deere B's and Farmall F20's all built in the 30's and 40's and still used today. Had a Case 811B and a WD9 IH and TD9 IH. We ran flat belts for a lot of jobs, but the one dear to my heart was grinding grain for livestock. I have Kubotas now. Great tractors, but just not the same
Happy to see young people still active in Ag. Proud of you! :)

Designed to fail started in 64, many old Farmalls are still running and never been apart. The modern stuff will not make 20 years old and be parked. I know M’s that still work daily on farms. The biggest problem for the old tractors is the fuel we use today. The shelf life of fuel is awful and destroys old engines. Pure gas is getting hard to find but needed on these old tractors

Cool process with the old tractor that runs like a Swiss watch. It's good that you watch the tractor; I don't know if it has an auto cutoff if oil pressure is lost. Although that would be rare, it would be a shame to lose the engine that way. Like you say - a beater tractor with a good engine/PTO might be the best way.

That sure brought back some good memories! I used do the same thing on my uncle's (& dad's) family farm to mill the corn we brought in. We used a Ford tractor (grey & red, wide front tire spacing, always started), and getting that belt set on the pulley could take a few tries. We had a iron stake in the ground that the front of the tractor was chained to (the pulley for the belt was on a removable unit attached to the rear PTO). I was around 8 the first time I got to help with that and did it many times after. My uncle would rub a rosen bar against the belt to keep traction on the mill pulley, as it was smaller diameter. That Ford tractor was the first powered equipment that I learned to drive when I was 9. (My uncle taught me. I would have to pull up against the steering wheel to overcome the force to push the clutch in -hehe, Thankfully, I was heavy enough to just stand on the brake.) Used to drive the mile round trip to to get the mail for him on my own. I felt so big back then!
He was legally blind, but his rows were as straight they could be in the fields. Thanks for the wonderful flashback to 1971!

Interesting VLog. You're struggling with managing too much fresh water while many others struggle with not getting enough. The dynamics of the differing farm locations and the management of the needed resources vary from one extreme to the other with all being dependent upon mother nature and the farmers.

you could take a rearend from an independent rear suspension car (they got real short axleshafts and good axle seals to keep the oil in) and mount that straight on the pump shaft, then you put your PTO shaft onto the pinion of the diff, bingo bango no V-belts

@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan Not necessarily if the distance for the tractor wasn't too far away. Once you're set, and even driving it there could be done by one person. But for other reasons it would be a lot more work. You'd have to have plenty of relatively clean water , and fuel (wood/coal) ready ahead of time as well as staying there the entire time that you're planning to run the pump. Yeah, my previous comment was said in jest.

Flat belts - have you looked at importing from India or Pakistan? Such belts are still routinely used by farmers to pump water there. Low level ground drainage - if there are any Dutch farmers within striking distance of your operation, it could be interesting to hear their take on canal drainage.

Ditch is lower than the creek that drains the area for them. That's why they have to pump the water up. Looks like it's only a couple of feet - but that's all it takes :/

Shout out to you mentioning Tom Pemberton's channel @ 15.00 mins in, live a couple of miles away in Lytham, UK, the local Environmental Agency mentioned they prefer to flood farmers fields rather than houses built on flood plains, when Tom & Pop had a meeting with them in a video zonks ago, probably someone who has the 'why do I need a Dairy Farmer, I get my milk from the store', crazy attitude... 🤔🙄🤭

The Farmall M is great tractor. You video running the belt is one of the very few I have ever found. The engine runs so smooth on the belt that it just purrs. I grew up on my Grandparents farm and he had an M. Ran belts on a silo filler and grain blower... lots of power for those jobs.
Could you use the M to run the PTO pump?

    • @WesFarms
