Who would be willing to try their own minimalism challenge? There is no need to do a full month, even a week would help clear out unneeded stuff from your life.
My friend and I have had a long-term argument/discussion on "what is an item?" I would have counted each shoe (because it's possible to lose one - same with socks). I also, as you mentioned, would have counted the packaged pez dispenser as one and the enclosed package of pez candies as a second item (but NOT each individual pez candy). I was glad to see you counted the blender pieces separately instead of "one blender." It's a hard game to play. Good for you to finish it. I'm sure we all "fudge" on the rules. The goal is to a) have fewer items, b) touch all your stuff once a year, and c) get current on what you now hold valuable compared to what you used to hold valuable. I'd say you are a winner!
Isn't it funny how those doo dad's hang out in the drawers? You did great. Thank you for getting to it & not "overexplaining" everything. Much appreciated. Also, thank you for recycling, thrifting, repurposing & generally being responsible about your cast offs. Be blessed!!
This is like watching a pocket dump. Some interesting; some not so much. The background music was lowkey and I appreciate that. Thanks for the inspirational vid.
The struggle about HOW to give stuff away or having an accessible way to give away, sell, or recycle your clutter always seems to impede me beyond just tossing it out. Great vid Tyler!
You should look into the app BUNZ, it's a great way to give away clutter to people in person. So many times I feel something isnt valuable enough to sell, and it's hard to find someone to gift it to, where it would add value to their home. But on the app, the person who wants the thing comes to you, and you dont feel bad about taking their money because they dont pay you any real money, just an in-app coins that people get by trading stuff. (Its designed to be free, a trading community)
You are the only one who actually said the rules of the game. I am doing the game as well. I am struggling with the 28-30 items. So far I can already tell the difference.
@@TylerLloyd technically no cause I grouped things together; like if I had multiple cards I was getting rid of, I'd count them as one item if they were similar enough. But in actuality I got rid of well over 500 items. I gave a bunch to friends who wanted it and donated the majority to Good Will. I still have to edit the video.
Tyler Thank you for taking the time to share your journey! I went to training this weekend and as usual brought too much. After seeing other students and a great instructor who talked about her journey I had an epiphany. Letting go is difficult for me. I am half way through your video and at the pez part. It’s really motivated me. Thank you!
You got this! I have also struggled with letting go. It is hard. We attach a lot of emotion to our physical things and it sometimes requires a lot of work to uncouple the emotion, understand the emotions, and let go.
Good job. I think the beauty of the game is that it forces you to dig deeper, to work harder at finding those hidden things that you are so used to seeing, you don't see them anymore. As for the rules, the end goal is the same. If it works, who cares?
I agree! But felt the need to explain myself since The Minimalist have stricter rules. Thanks for watching. Even as I struggled to let go of 450+ items, I may have gotten rid of an additional 450 since then. Really makes you think critically of what you have in your life. Wishing you the best!
My Carsbrant Awesome! I definitely hit a wall at the midway point, so stay strong. Once you’re done, I’d love to hear about anything that surprised you during the process.
Your game, your rules : ) I have done it a few times and I always (as in always not only while doing Mins game) keep a bag for donates in our hallway. I fill the bag over time and when it´s full I bring it to the nearest donation center, about two minutes walk from our apartment. Same with stuff to recycle, nearest "station" for that it two minutes walk away and when I am going out in that direction I´ll bring the stuff we want recycled. Things I will give to someone (or return, I count stuff I return to ppl to) I keep on a shelf in our entry hall closet until I am meeting that person. Every round of Mins game I have done I have tried to have everything out when the month is over. Sometimes the stuff going to someone special have stayed a little longer tho that fells ok for me, it has a designated home on that shelf until I can take it away.
Wonderings ANNA we have a corner of our bedroom with an ongoing pile and we try to do the same as you! I am very envious of you having a donation center so close.
I think you did a great job. At the end of the challenge, you had three options 1) Get rid of stuff you actually wanted 2) Get rid of stuff you didn't want and stretch the counting 3) Quit. I think you chose the best option because you finished what you started and you also learned from it.
Thanks! After spending A LOT more time I’m seeing more and more things that I don’t need, things I haven’t used in the last two months-and not just things like dress shirts and pants 😆. It’s all a journey. Wish you the very best!
@@TylerLloyd I know what you mean. I've done the minimalism game twice now and the first time around, there were things I wasn't quite ready to let go of that I was the second time. Like you said, it's a journey.
Thanks. Yes, I started to de-clutter a few years ago and from the beginning of that it has felt great. I continue to let things go by using a bag that sits near the door in which I place the outgoing things whenever I find something to go out.
i really wish people or the "rules" of it would not tell people to just "trash" items.... i think people should be decluttering responsibly. i am currently doing the challenge this month and will try to find homes for the items as much as possible
Found you as I’m moving...moved this time last year from a home we owned for 19 years and had two kids in.... and brought a whole pile of stuff with us... hoping to move to an apartment this time so really need to get rid of more stuff this time round... liked your video and am going to be way more ruthless this time 😊🙏
Nothing like moving to make you confront all the stuff you own. Wishing you the best as you simplify. Take your time and approach it one room, closet, draw at a time. If you happen to still have things in boxes and have the space, you can only take things out of the box when you need it. After several months you can see what’s still the box and take it to a donation center.
Boy, I wish we had counted. After Tidying up came out, we donated a LOT. However, I feel like I'm still surrounded. Maybe we'll do the game this time. Also, saving up boxes to donate is not cheating. It's not wasting gas or time.
Same! After months of being at home, I'm finding more and more stuff that I don't use or doesn't serve me. Have a very nice stack of donation boxes building up.
You got it! I'm still growing and learning when it comes to minimalism, but documenting that journey and my struggles overcome the urges of material consumption is valuable.
Only one thing, which was a display port cable that I didn't think I would ever use. Months later I purchased a USB C that connected to my monitor via a display cable, so I had to buy one. There have been times when I was tempted to buy something again, but I found myself wanting to buy something to solve a problem that I'm creating in my mind.
@@TylerLloyd I think it’s accepting that I REALLY don’t NEED things. I always play the “what if”. I’m down to -120 things for 2021 though so still moving along.
Yeah, that is a hard one and something that I am still working on myself. As I've been decluttering, I tend to give myself deadlines for certain items, telling myself that if don't use an item by a certain date, then it is time to let it go (I've even considered taking a piece of tape and giving things and "expiration date" 😆 ).

@Charlotte Quill Awesome! I hope it is going well. Are finding any areas of your home particularly problematic?
A tip : watch series at kaldroStream. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies these days.
@Christian Otto yea, been watching on flixzone} for since december myself =)

I love how you put everything out on the table. Great visual progression!
Glad you like it! It made for a nice visual, but the numbers tallying my count were a pain! h😂 but happy with how it turned out.

Agreed! I see minimalism as a way of being a conscious consumer, so if you are minimizing you should also be conscious in doing that.
@@TylerLloyd yep exactly :)
I’m taking stuff to thrift store, sell some stuff, donate some, and what really is no need to anyone, I throw away. So you can adjust the “rules”.
