Preparing for the Worst from Winter Ice Storm | Power Outage Ready
Would you be ready if you were snowed in and lost power? Could you heat your house, cook, and keep needed electrical items running? How long could you last? After going through a horrible 2009 ice storm in Kentucky, I always think we'll be without power for more than a week. Luckily, we had ventless gas logs to help heat the house. But now we don't have that and have to rely on portable propane heaters. I've done all I can do, so now we wait.

How to Winter Sow Seeds | A Complete Native Plant Starting Tutorial
Переглядів 1 тис.День тому
Winter sowing is a method of starting seeds that mimics the cold stratification process that many native plants require for germination. Why is cold stratification needed? Certain seeds have evolved to germinate only after experiencing cold temperatures, ensuring they don't sprout during an unseasonably warm spell in the fall or early winter. These seeds typically have a hard outer shell or dor...

Should you get a home energy audit? | Louisville Kentucky Energy Audit
You could have probably used your soil and amended it with something cheap, used urine as fertilizer, used free seeds from store bought produce and scavenged for pots or materials for a raised bed.
One thing i learned in my third year of gardening and buyn8ng seeds. I bought a larger pack of tobasco seeds (1000), because the price was not much more. This year i started ten seeds and planted 5 plants. I gave a few away, so that left me 990 seeds in my pack. I harvested a few rounds of peppers to make pepper sauce. I left several hundred peppers on the plants to dry out. When they were ready, i started collecting seeds from them. When i got around another 1000 seeds, i got tired of dealing with them. I threw the rest in the compost bin. So now i have almost 2000 tabasco seeds. As i sit here writing this, i got a notification my new seed order is being shipped. 😂
Excellent recommendations - better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it...
thank you for sharing the lovely experiences! <3
Excellent, Tyler!! You are a natural at this!, man...YES to native seed winter sowing!!
I swear by microwaveable pet heating pads in a pinch. Heat them for 7 minutes - the heat lasts for 8 hours plus and they are reusable.
I didn’t know those where a thing! Looks like they make small ones that I could tuck into coveralls. Great suggestion 💚
hi, i wanna contact you for business purpose, are you available. btw good content.
hi tyler 🤗 there is no such thing as too many seeds for me. i sow, share, swap and donate ... then buy more. i also had zero germination with 3 rounds of migardener aunt molly's ground cherries last year. this year, i plan to sow them again as well as seeds from a different company - hopefully, they all grow.😊 tfs
Glad to know I'm not alone with the Aunt Molly's ground cherries. I'm usually really got at getting even the most difficult plants to germinate, but no luck last year with ground cherries. I've winter sown some in milk jugs, to see if that will work. Fingers crossed we will both be successful this year!
Should have picked a better title
Suggestions?
my phone (only because unfortunately i have to have one apparently), my tablet (because thats what i use to do all my important research on), my acoustic guitar (because it was my moms) my drum sticks (because its my newest musical passion), and my favorite outfit (because fat+nude = ewww lol)
Good list! And yes, sometimes I wish I didn't need a phone.
100 things sounds like SO MUCH.... then i think about how many pairs of socks i have, double that (2 socks for each pair) then i own more socks then everything else combined lol 🤣
So many socks! And you only have two feet! Sounds like a hoarder to me (joking!).
@@TylerLloyd haha 🤣
Thanks for walking through that Tyler. I love to see people sharing how to germinate native plants. I haven't looked at your catalog of videos yet but I'd love to see how you would collect seeds, keep them and then germinate as well. We need more propagation details for people collecting native seeds in their area.
I’ll add that to my list of future videos for the summer when I can show hands on how to collect seeds!
I am glad I am not alone !! I confess am addicted to buying not enough seeds, according to me.
There are always so many seeds left unpurchased. I feel bad for them…
Execelente 🎉
You just inspired me to plant the California native seeds that I bought last year. I have sky lupine, hemophilia, clarkia, and many others. I have a seed addiction I know. I will sow them inside in pots and also sow directly outside in the ground.
Wonderful! You have some amazing natives out west. Happy growing!
My list of 100+ native species would post correctly in a comment, so I included it in the description. Do you have any favorite native plants?
SO hard to pick a favorite because every one of them has something it offers to the whole ecosystem. For some reason, though, I really really love Grey headed coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) for the dancey, droopy yellow flowers.
I keep telling my family I'm done buying seeds for the upcoming season. Mom just gives me the "yeah, right" look. Sadly, she's not wrong.
@@lucyedwards5654 after watching this video, my wife said she was cutting me off 😆. She has, however, said ok to me purchasing some asparagus crowns and trees in the spring.

Hey! You say you speak French with a West African accent? Are you originally from a French speaking African country or did you live their for a while? I'm from South Africa. I love your garden, I can't wait to see what the next year brings you!
I learned French while living in Burkina Faso. I lived there for two years and loved my experience. Since my French speaking was all set in a rural village, my vocabulary has lots of holes and there are several words only know in one of the local Burkina languages. I hope to make it down to South Africa and neighboring countries one day.
What about water costs?
Good question! I got away with minimal irrigation but if I had accounted for it, I suspect it would have been well below $20. Rates in my area are about $4.50 a thousand gallons.
Gran variedad
Si! I love trying to grow a wide variety of stuff
Lmao I spent like 300$ on seeds last month
If I count the wild flowers, I might be getting close. But for vegetables, I’m well under $300 so that doesn’t seem too bad 😅
A little piece of electrical tape would be a good way to keep the lights from sliding down the wire
@@robertmarsh8334 good idea! I just noticed that one of the bulbs burnt a cabbage leaf. Not a lot of damage but it would be good to keep them off the plants.
@TylerLloyd I like how useful electrical tape can be lol
My daughter bought me a case for organizing my seeds and I discovered I needed 2 more to fit them all. (I think I have a problem 😂) So happy to find another gardener in KY that is growing in a natural approach
Did you get one of the cases people use for organizing photos? I keep seeing them and telling myself my ziplock bags work just fine.
@TylerLloyd yes I did. It works great for now but I will probably need to upgrade in a few years after I buy more land
Too relatable once you start buying seeds it’s so hard to stop I’m listening to this as I run out of space in my seed organizer boxes. Definitely going to be an interesting growing season this year
If there is will, there is a way 😆 Every square inch of my property is in danger of becoming a garden.
Awesome! Finally found a fellow KY gardener! I'm in Hardin county and building up my garden business this year and hopefully will be selling at the farmers market
Good luck with your garden! I grew up selling at farmers markets and really miss it. I’m starting to get into native plants and thinking I may try selling native plant starts in my area.
@TylerLloyd that's awesome! Hopefully I might see you at one at some point. I'm planning on doing something similar to you and documenting my journey on my channel. I don't care if it gets big enough to monetize but if people can learn from my success and failures then I can call it a win 👍
@ same! I like gardening/nature and I like playing around with cameras, so why not combine them both.
Another Ky seed addict here. I gave up on leeks but maybe by planting them later they won't rot. Didn't realize that about sunflowers. Will have to rethink where I plant them. Thanks.
I found growing at least 2 ground cherries turns out well
How do you like to eat them? Fresh or making them into a jam or dessert?
Yeah, i've bought to many. I got to many seeds even before christmas, and all the christmas sales...it was very cheap, but don't know what im going to do with everything.
What got me were the deals like “free shipping for orders over $40.” I had everything I needed at $22, but couldn’t pass up free shipping 😆. I will likely be finding some seed swaps in my area, to give away some excess while also maybe picking up something I don’t have (not that I’ll have the room for it!). I also gave away several plant starts last year to friends as I’m trying to bring more people into gardening.
I don't think you have too many seeds just a growing space deficiency
I like how you think!
The #1 reason I wear bib overalls is comfort. I like the fit and pockets of the Big Smith brand.
i bought bolero pelleted carrots from johnnys in winter 2022...and thet did great 2023 and 2024. germination was the same on the 2nd year. i still have some seeds i will do a germination test this week ill let u know. if they aee good for a 3rd yr
That’s good to know! I did a germination test earlier this year of a bunch of old seeds that I bought an estate sales. They were left out in a building, exposed to temperature swings, for 10+ years, and they did surprisingly well. I hope the pelleted carrots germinate well in year 3!
I knew you were buying a lot of seeds but didn’t know HOW MANY. I look forward to lots of tasty treats. Love, your wife ❤
You'll be eating well this year! 😘
Ya I regret getting one. It’s obsessed with controlling me.
"time to stand up" 🙃
my costs are seeds and potting soil and buying the basil pot plant
This upcoming year, my costs should only be seeds and maybe some soil. After getting things established, it should be a cheaper gardening year for 2025.
My bib load out is: Hip flask Pocket watch Pocket knife Small flashlight Note pad Pen Wallet Handkerchief Pliers Bibs are like the pickup of the pants world. Best of all, I have yet to split the crotch/bumb area in them
I have at least 30 of them here. Black and new: With a nice shirt, you can even do it in church. Denim, or striped: everyday. If the above no longer look nice, then for work. My favorites: Round House, Carhart, Liberty, Dikies. Plus some European brands. Of course I also wear normal clothes, but with a dress size of 32x34, overalls and coveralls look quite good on me.
I Just used free bamboo from nature as fence free soil from sources water from natural well I dugged up also farmed chicken free eggs just needed to spend on seeds water pipes later i saved seeds from vegetables
That’s amazing! You’ve really taken advantage of what’s readily available. Gardening doesn't need to be expense.
@TylerLloyd yes it's doesn't haha it depends on the place you live
I grew bulbing Fennel for the first time this year and while I failed to actually get bulbs, it was a lot of fun to grow and fun to go out into my garden and pick fronds to nibble. Definitely growing again and recommend just for that and how leafy green and pretty the plant is. Also, Honeynut squash. Incredibly sweet, resistant to the vine borers that like to take out my squash, prolific, and small enough to roast up for one person, or peel a bunch and make soup.
Adding fennel to the list! I once made a tomato soup with fennel and it was amazing. I’ll also check out the honey nut squash!
just put a smaller ziploc in those photos boxes. i have those.. i hate them ahah i use picture folder in a binder. however by dates... so 1st page is my 12..16 weeks before last frost.. next few pages 10..14 weeks etc weeks. and i write the dates on them when to start the seeds.
Love the organization by weeks before/after frost! I returned those containers already but then bought something else that doesn’t seem just right. I’ve probably devoted more time to organizing my seeds than is beneficial.
I just started using the photo boxes to organize my seeds too. My daughter bought me one for Christmas and I realized I needed 2 more to fit everything 😂
parsley?
It made the list! But, I honestly don’t know what to use parsley for 😆. It just tastes “green and leafy” to me, rather than having a unique flavor. Or maybe green and leafy IS the flavor 🤔
@@TylerLloyd taboulé.. couscous tomatoes.. garlic... red onions..cucmber and parsley... in a pita with chicken and houmous.. i love it lol
1) The flavour is a zillion times better than supermarket fruit & veg. 2) Your food is organic. 3) You are investing in your health. 4) Gardening is good exercise. 5) You're absorbing vitamin D from the sun while gardening.
Agreed on all!
My sodium and blood sugar crashed how do I get around that problem to do a deep cleanse to try to fix my back pain
these types of christmas lights, the incandescent ones, aren't even legal to be imported or manufactured in canada as of like 10 years ago, except the "mini" ones, so it's very difficult to get your hands on them here. they're basically contraband haha.
Interesting! The U.S. banned most incandescent bulbs in 2023 but these were exempt.
I would like to get rid of our TV but I think my husband would shit 💩
