Fender Stock Speaker That Actually Sounds Great -Oxford

- Many guitarists feel it is necessary to replace the stock Fender speaker in their amplifier. In this video I am going to discuss the stock Fender Oxford speaker in vintage silverface and black face amps. This is a common stock speaker in the Fender Blackface Deluxe Reverb and in the silverface deluxe reverb. It also comes in some Fender Princeton Reverbs and many other vintage fender amps. I think the Oxford may provide the best clean sound in a fender amp. #fenderamps #fenderamps #deluxereverb

I love my 1963 Oxford 12K5-6
awesome
1963 Fender Vibroverb with Oxford 10K5 is THE sound of surf rock. Hot tip
Well done. I like the Oxford speakers too. I don’t like the hate they get, but I’m glad cause it drives prices down
Thanks so much.
@@FrankPersico thank you for the video! Looking at getting a 70s Twin Reverb with Oxford speakers. This helps
Hi! Great video, thank you :) I try to find the closest sound to a "Fender Special Design Blue label" speaker. I heard that the Eminence Legend 1058/1258 get pretty close. Do you have any info about it? Thanks :)
H hi thanks for the comment. I have never used that speaker in particular but I have also read great reviews on them. Wish I could be of more help
There's an odd phenonmenon with old fender speakers that I noticed with my utah-loaded pro-reverb(67'). They sound really good and completely clear until the amp reaches breakup, where for whatever reason they merely don't like amp overdrive. It's like they teeter on the edge of having just enough power handling for the 35-40w amp; failing only at the amp's absolute maximum output. They sound fine clean and don't really get much louder when cranked, but the speakers distort when the amps cranked, and in an unflattering way. It's probably because Leo had the custom speakers spec'd out to be able to handle all of the clean tones as the bare-minium, but not the overdrive. Back then they didn't really believe in amp-distortion being favorable, and Leo probably only left the extra gain that leads to overdrive for other instruments with a lower output pups or mics, anticipating that no-one would use it.
I suppose snobs who anticipated a lush overdrive from a cranked amp get disappointed, but the overall tonality of the speakers is to die for. The best solution is just using a boost or distortion pedal to get more pre-amp gain with the power section just below it's absolute maximum.
Yes I agree and have experienced that as well. Nothing sounds purer or sweeter when they are in their comfort zone but push them and it’s not great. I have other fender amps fitted with other aftermarket speakers for when I wanna push the amp itself. But I gotta admit I am almost never in any real life situation where I get to do that
I agree with this: I had a Twin with Oxfords and it sounded great especially with Rhodes. The only issue was they made the stage hot - running at 6 all night. Replaced them with WGS ET 65s - ran at 3.5 then. More defined, not as sweet.
Yeah there is a certain charm in the Oxford even with its faults
Roy Buchanan played through early 70s Vibrolux amps, I believe, volume at 10 treble at 10 bass at 0..
What? I can’t hear you. Lol
Nice video ! I use an original bassman 1965 with original cab, two ofxord 12t6 are present and in good conditions and sincerly this speakers blows my mind. Especialy at low/middle volume. The tone is deep, sounds are clear, hot and smooth. And when i use a distortion and cut the tona on bridge pickup... Holy shits it's a world reunion of Harmonics that's just incredible. I will be honest, If players don't like oxfords speakers then this is a benediction for me because i like them. I put one oxford in my Marshall Jcm800 combo and seriously i was not preapared to this butchery...
Wow that’s awesome. In a jcm?!? I never would imagine but not surprised now that you mention it
@@FrankPersico It always depend on taste of course but trust me, plug this old oxford in a jcm800 4210 and then something happen... Lot of people are not ready for this lol Cheers from France. Benj
Keep hating everyone…… more for me
😂
I want the Vibrolux with oxfords !
Any sound clips
Selling it?
its actually for sale on craigslist. i listed it the other day
how do you deal with the 'farting' on a 12t6
Honestly If I’m going to be playing loud enough to make them “fart” I use an amp with a diff speaker. I only like these oxfords when they are being played ultra clean and and low to mid volume
@FrankPersico mine do it at even bedroom level. Anything past 2 on my bassman and its all fart, nothing close to a usable volume with a drum kit. If I play with a really light touch it eases it a bit. Maybe I'll try a compressor
@@gordonhuskin7337 oh wow. Wonder if they may need to be re-coned?
@@FrankPersico That's a possibility. I got them in a bass/bandmaster cab that i picked up only a few days ago. Wouldn't surpise me. I'm going to open the cab again tomorrow and check them out
@@gordonhuskin7337 deff a good idea. These amps are old so anything is possible.
