This was an amazing video in this channel. Jo I fell in love with your English, i'm from Brazil too, and I'm doing my best to learn this language that I love everyday now I'm following you on your UA-cam channel.
I listened to both of the podcasts and you both are so inspiring. I’m currently learning Japanese and whenever I’m feeling discouraged you or Jo inspire me to keep going 💛
I couldn't help but smile when you started talking about your Egyptian friend and his/her family. That shit is amazing and everything language learning is about!
Awesome crossover! You're two of my biggest language learning and youtubing inspirations! I loved the conversation about interference because I just spent two years learning Spanish and am now switching to Italian so it was VERY relatable.
I am so relieved that you mentioned the problem with with Portuguese and Spanish, because I experienced that when I tried to learn Italian, the Spanish kept interfering and in the end I gave up! I had no particular reason for studying Italian because I had decided I wasn't going to Italy anymore. But the classes I took were good and I got excellent grades, and because of my French and Spanish I can pretty well read anything in Italian - but for speaking, forget it! Now I am just starting to learn Hebrew and no confusion. it's so different from everything I speak that I am hopeful and very much enjoying the brain exercise at 82 years old!
thank you so much for this video. It actually help me a lot. your a awesome person ever. I'm improve a lot with all that interview and conversation about language and something like that. love ya :3
Thank you so much for those inspiring videos, Mr. Steve. You are such an inspiration to me in my language learning journey. I felt a little bit demotivated a few weeks ago, but now I know what I have to do and how I can improve and learn more every day.
wohh what a boost of energy after hearing both of you. Congrats. It support me a lot. Steve i am a lingq user in mandarin upscaling to intermediate and i use your program as a laundry machine. I mean all my learning i try to passt through your program. Sometimes when video has no subtitles i use a simple way to achive it. Other times i take advntage from your content. But most of the time i go on my own. But as i said your program is so usefull and open in all senses that i used as a laundry machine to read and hear . I am not a big fan of vocabulary review. For me everyword is like the name of new person that is being introduce to you. First time you dont pay much attention and you forget easily. But if that person tells you something compelling you inmediate reaction is, pardom me how you say was your name ?. Thanks a lot Steve.
Luca Lampariello created a video on youtube " how to fall in love with a language " or something like that. First comes interest, then you get passionate or not. Keeping the passion alive is like trying to keep your campfire alight when it's spitting with rain ! You have to keep at it or lose it. People give up too easily I think.
I think that the best way to learn a language is to acquire the language listening every day like children do. Absorb a language and that the roles of grammar can help to set up the rest.
Hi Jo! Good to see you here. I am a teacher in a Japanese high school and I am very interested in making languages in school more useful. I hate that people come out of school unable to speak and I really want to do something about it. But I feel like I am fighting the students, the textbook, the system, all of Japan… lol Also, really interested in the Portunhol convo. I have a degree in French and Spanish, so my Spanish is relatively high. I can NOT convince myself to study Portuguese. My brain thinks I already know it. Why should I study? I spent a couple months in Brazil for the Olympics, so I speak decently, but there is a lot I don’t know. Like, I am fluent, but I legit do not know the past tense. Lol.
Hey there Claire! In regards to wanting to make language school more enjoyable and useful to your students. I reccommend checking out the comprehensible classroom website!! It's a gateway into how to teach using CI/TPRS and other language learning methods that focus on acquisition as opposed to memorization/learning. I hope you find it useful!!! As for the pushback, I know exactly what you mean. I've had pushback too. Something that has been a great tool for persuasian in my case is the way I start my beginning classes! It's pretty hard to make me use the textbook after I have a rousing class session and the students are engaged and enthused about the target language. So, I guess let the results speak for themselves and just be transparent with your students! You won't be able to change the system, but you can at least create a change in the lives of your students!! Good luck to you!!
I would love to learn Portuguese, but I think it would be "portuñol" for a while. When I started Italian, it was "itañol", but it did get better over time :D
Steve, are you so fervent in playing golf as well? Could be a pertinent strategy listening to golf podcasts in a foreign language, hence combining golf with languages.
Languange learning is a blast topic i also learn english english is my second languange but i speak english every day in What'sApp speaking group english is challenging for me hehe.😊
Great video! I totally agree on the interference - it will happen. But curiously, for me, it doesn't matter at all, if the languages are related - if I don't have enough practice in one language, others will creep in and it doesn't matter how similar they are. Spanish used to creep in my German, now it does in my Greek. And those languages have nothing in common. But because my Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian are now fluent, there is no mixing whatsoever. Is anyone else like that? I'd be interested to know. Because for me, it was never about "how closely related are those languages", it was always about "how much speaking practice have I done".
90% of words and Grammar aren't the same between Portuguese and Spanish. When people say that Spanish is similar to Portuguese, probably she or he won't speak so well one of them. It's necessary to see well the difference between Portuguese and Spanish. I'll search for her here on UA-cam. 🇧🇷🇧🇷

If she hadn’t told me she’s Brazilian, I’d never know it! She’s got a sharp English!
Aún no he experimentado estar en un país entero donde hablen un idioma que no sea la mía...espero poder comenzar a viajar en el futuro
I do like Eff U attitude of some language learners who don’t like or respect rules imposed by others when it comes to learning.
