      Nick's Strength and Power I knew Denise and was competing at the same time back in the late eights and early nintys at a middleweight level. She was focused and brought a lot of positive attention to the world of female bodybuilding as a sport. It's heartbreaking to see how this has all turned out for her. Wish there was someway to reach out and offer a hand.

    • @criztu

      Muscles swollen by chemicals, are not "strong bodies".
      Body builders are lab rats, frogs. They sign their bodies off to corporations, who proceed to inject stuff into them. They don't tell you this on tv.
      After the contract is terminated, there's no more chemicals to inject, and so there's no more "strong body"

The ones with the sponsorships where they have to "stack" that company's supplements to get ripped and huge, and tan until they look like they're burned, and where the women start looking like men with the angular jawline.....

    I wish her the best! I competed with her in 1991 at the USA's. I was a lightweight and she was a heavyweight. We each won our own divisions, but I think it was Nancy Lewis that took the overall. I can really relate to the whole bodybuilding thing and it's REALLY hard to come out of it. It can really mess with your mind. Bodybuilding IS NOT LIFE... LIFE happens when you stop BODYBUILDING. I found Jesus too... in 2002... I love my life now... and I hope Jesus helps her to where she needs to be in her life. 😍💜 Love you , Denise.... from Clifta Coulter Perez

Denise did find Jesus after the Ms.O but even that wasn't enough keep her demons at bay permanently. Glad to hear you're doing well (and you totally should have taken the lightweight title at the 92 Nationals in Orlando).

    I wish her the very, very, best in the world. I was absolutely in love with her, back in the 90's. B-Polar disorder is one helluva harsh mental disorder. People seem to try and down play it, but trust me, a person who was raised by a Bi-Polar father, it is torture on both the one who suffers from it, and those who love them. I hope she can get the help she needs and make a come back!

      Patrick Murphy and you know EVERY bodybuilder, ever? There are people from all walks of life who make a mess of things be it drugs, financials, alcohol. But because these individuals have at some point been bodybuilders, suddenly it all bodybuildings fault.
      There will be hundreds of thousands of people who bodybuild to compete or just for recreation who have also taken steroids and other chemicals etc who will have 'retired' perfectly fine and are now leading normal everyday lives.
      Making such a broad, sweeping statement like yours is naive and ignorant.

    • @OLDMANBADGER
      @OLDMANBADGER 7 років тому +15

      not really- im talking about top level pros/ Look at Flex, Dillett, Nasser, Bertil Fox, Sonny Schmidt just to name a few who either fucked up or end up fucked up. The only other sport i can think of where this is so prevalent is boxing , but not with so much premature death. Btw i got out of BBing in 1996 after I met Dorian Yates, i realised i could never be as big as him.

    I used to see her at a chiropractic office and in 'golds gym in the early nineties.
    She was a nice person. The fact is all of the pro bodybuilding world is tremendously warped and sick.
    It is a short step from sticking a needle full of hormones in your body to putting a little pick me up in the needle instead.
    I have trained for 32 years and am reevaluating my life at this point. I stayed natural but beating the shit out of yourself with weights is a hard way to live. I will probably always train but the self flagellation is over for me. Content of character is far more important than superficial appearances.
    I hope Denise finds sobriety and some kind of peace. She has obviously had a hard road. Also many people I saw in Gold's are dead now.

      If you had close contact with her during that time do you remember when she just dissapeared from sight?
      It must have been when she left California to go back home to Texas. Did you get any hint of why she would just quit bodybuilding?
      Something changed in her, or perhaps the mental disorder (bipolar) that is rumored crept in, but no one just drops out after having so much success like that unless something happened.
      Then she went straight into a bible college.
      Then from that to drugs.
      Makes no sense.

    • @thedeadnigerianprincehaunt5096
      @thedeadnigerianprincehaunt5096 6 років тому +12

      Conan Richard , if she is truly bipolar, you could help her get back on track from addiction but, with the bipolar disorder added in.... it would just be downhill again during a hightened phase of mania or depression that would probably lead back to drug addiction again as well.
      Only those who can truly know theirself and manage the in-and-out nuances of their own bipolar particulars while at either extreme end of it can be helped by others without a great chance of relapse. Add in the drugs and it is almost impossible to do more than stabilize from further deterioration let alone be close to the former self pre-onset. A whole different lifestyle from what the original contributing one must be adopted to control negative effects.
      Perhaps if she never was a bodybuilder and decided to start using enhancement drugs to advance it, her bipolar disorder would not have surfaced in such an aggressive manner to have led her down such a destructive road to begin with.

      Essentially ALL female body builders look like nasty-ass dudes, but like Nick mentioned in the video, she was certainly one of the better looking ones. That being said, this chick had an ass that could give a blind man a boner, and that pic of her in a white thong at 4:01 is enough to confirm that I would've certainly hit that from behind back in the day, providing I never had to catch a glimpse of her unsightly, ripped, man arms. I mean her ass is absolutely PERFECT.
      The difference between her pics from back then and her booking photos from present-day are absolutely *Earth shattering* . I actually think it's sad to see the way she looks now. She's so nasty looking with that facial hair that I'm assuming the cops were forced to check and make sure she didn't have a dick and balls when they had to write down her gender on the booking form and she claimed to be a female...goddamn is she grotesque.

    Good video but what a sad story :-(
    Mike Mentzer was one of the greats from the 1980's. I heard at the time, that he died from kidney failure which I'd associated with steriod use. Prior to watching this video, I did not know he used heroin. Strangely his bro and training partner Ray died soon after Mike.

    Back then, I got a picture from the shoot as well as one of Laura Cravelle ... I have Laura's but can't find the photo of Denise. What a loss ... in more ways than one!
    The last I hear of Denise, she was working with disadvantaged kids in the Venice area.

    I remember when Denise won the 1993 NPC Nationals - she wasn't as bulky - she was sleek and swoopy and her posing routine made exceptional use of her "assets" - she was *smokin'* hot. Smokin'! She really stood out in that she was big and ripped, but still looked very feminine and well-balanced. I can still remember that posing routine - it had that much of an affect on me (and I'm sure others as well).
    When Denise went pro she got a lot bigger - and unfortunately as happens when androgens get involved - her features became more and more masculine. Toward the end she was getting kind of scary-looking ... same thing happened with Tonya Knight and Dorit Kinset (not sure those are spelled correctly). IMO female body-building has gone astray - they're getting ridiculously big and have lost their feminine appeal. Cory Everson was amazing in that even though she was BIG, she still looked very feminine. I guess maybe I'm a bit too old-skool ;)

    I was serious about weightlifting for about 3 years. I never took steroids so i was dissapointed that after 3 years i didn't have that head turning physique. But when i stopped lifting i soon went into depression, started drinking and soon after drugs. I look back and i was natrually high when i lifted weights because it kept you fit and it releases chemicals that can perk you up. So i can only imagine the high you get when you lift taking steroids and being able to go way farther than you ccould ever go if you were natruual. Then getting off the juice and losing most of your gains has got to be so depressing.

    @robsmith3839 7 років тому +111

    The biggest mistake so many muscle-heads make lies in the matter of priorities. They think that BB can be a vocation for them, and it's not. At the very best, it's an avocation, and those who think they can make it a vocation are very tragically deluding themselves. The women have been some of the most tragic examples of this failure of perception. They go to the gym, achieve a 'look' over time, and figure that's enough. It's not. A 'look' doesn't pay the bills or put food on the table. It never has, and never will. And those girls who aren't lucky enough to snag a non-demanding, supportive husband (i.e. the vast and overwhelming majority!) ultimately find this out the hard way. The bills come due, they have no money, so they start doing "sessions", they get into porn, wind up in prostitution because they don't know and have never learned how to do anything else.
    To me, one of the greatest BB successes is . . . no, not Arnold, but Franco. Yes, the little Sicilian. Shortly after he got to this country, he met a woman named Anita, and she was the best thing that ever happened to him. At the time he and Arnold were going to the gym, lying on the beach and working the little construction business they shared. Anita told Franco, "That's not enough." Franco listened, and he went to school determined to make something of himself, and he did. He became a doctor of chiropractic, and had a respectable career. He even inspired Arnold, who went to school and took business administration, going on to become the legend that he is.
    The point is; even in the very best of circumstances, BB is not something you can make any kind of a decent, consistent living at. It just isn't, and no amount of denial or wishful thinking will alter that harsh reality fact of life. So, go to the gym, pump your brains out, love every rep and every set, but keep it in a proper, realistic perspective particular to your own life, and your own future.

      Look, Robert, I'm forty and I grew up with MuscleMag and the mass monsters of the IFBB, as well as the dark underbelly of bodybuilding best explained by guys like Dan Duchaine.
      Even though I loved lifting, I never thought it was a profession.
      It was a hobby.
      Most rational people don't think it can be a career, but think about the types of personalities that go into professional bodybuilding and you will understand why.
      It's not rational or logical.

    • @robsmith3839
      @robsmith3839 7 років тому +5

      First of all; congratulations on your mature, realistic attitude! I understand what you're saying with regard to the 'type' of personality bodybuilding seems to attract. It's not for nothing that BB is called "the disease". Dan was a mixed bag. Like him or loath him, you had to respect him because he was honest at a time when the whole sport was in deep denial. On the other hand, I saw him in the gym a few times, and the guy definitely had problems.
      Hope you're still lifting and lovin' it. All the best to you!

      Amen, Rob Smith. I'm from the era of Samir Bannout and Chris Dickerson. I read all the magazines> Muscle and Fitness, Ironman,. I remember when Monica Brant first hit the scene. Wow. She was thicker than her latter years because she was probably juicing a little. She was THE blonde that followed Denise. I've had the "honor" of meeting both women. Denise used to work out at Lone Star Gym in Mesquite, Texas back in the late 80's. I'd just graduated college in Commerce, Texas, worked at UPS in Mesquite, and moved to Garland with my baby mama. I wanted to still lift, so I joined the closest gym I could find and that was Lone Star run by Rick and JB Addams. Didn't know them well, but they seemed nice. I think I worked out there for maybe a month, 2 at best. I recall seeing Denise and, WOW, she was awesome. Young, free, and seemingly happy. I think she made fun of me once, but it's all good. Last time I saw her she was wearing tight lycra shorts and a criss-cross tank top. She used to hang out with this blonde dude in his RX-7. I followed her for years and couldn't believe she made it all the way to second place in the Ms. O. Then as quickly as she rose, she fell. Think I read where she would train and then go and sleep in her car. That was her home. That was the typical bodybuilding story back in the day. The Mr. O purse was growing at the time, maybe 50K by then, but everything else was still small change. If "Uncle" Joe Weider didn't "sponsor" you, you really didn't make much of a living. Hundreds of young bodies comprise the bodybuilding landscape. They read the mags, make their way West to Cali, get hooked up with trainers, then the drugs, and then the spiral happens. They all thought they could be the next Arnold or Corrina Everson. Denise was gorgeous, but had a little tom-boy about her. She had the "look" though. Didn't know she'd make it that far that fast, but you knew somebody was looking at her, especially with the connections that the Addams family had in the iron game. God bless her.
      Monica Brant. Met her one night at the airport. Picked her up in a shuttle as her flight had been cancelled due to bad weather. Asked if she were hungry. She said yes and I took her to dinner. LOL, no, I didn't "take" her to dinner. I drove the shuttle. Picked her up, brought her back to my hotel and wished her good night. She showed her gratitude by asking for my name and address and said she'd send me a photo. So, I gave it to her and thought, "Yeah, right. She ain't gon' send me nuthin." I still have that photo, 8X10 B&W. personally autographed, thanking me for "taking care of her in DFW." I went from ogling her photos in Ironman Magazine to actually meeting her and I wasn't disappointed. Classy lady. I wonder if she and Denise ever met.

      When women start having babies, that's when their jaws really drop. Such a freaky creepy metamorphosis. I see this woman working the local hardware store, age maybe 58-62 who has the strong facial hair growing, not peach fuzz. I want to hand her a bottle of estrogen. Swedish women are notorious for dramatically changing after age 26. I don't understand how someone's genes can suddenly start to create an entire new facial structure.

    • @jilliansmith7123
      @jilliansmith7123 6 років тому +2

      KickDownDoors: they mature and get older. It's genetic. Men often begin to look like ladies as they age...but it's individual. Each person ages at their own rate depending on their genetics and lifestyle. But genetics makes all of us age sooner or later. That's why young women are referred to as "nubile."
      1.(of a young woman) suitable for marriage, especially in regard to age or physical development; marriageable. 2. (of a young person, usually a woman) sexually developed and attractive:
      Once you pass that youth, you lose that marriageable attractiveness. You have to use things like character, brains, energy, diligence, humor, etc. to be attractive then. Used to be called "old maids" when no longer "nubile." Not a mystery. But sad in a way. And good in other ways.

    There’s no way you can convince me that the mugshot photo is of Denise. The real Denise has brown eyes and a wider nose. That mugshot photo is of a person with blue eyes and a skinny nose. They’re clearly different people. My guess is that it’s a different Denise that happens to have the same name.
