Everything chemistry related things you said are wrong. Neutral water has a pH of 7 and baking soda dissolve really well in it, but the pH will stay about the same because its an amphiprotic salt. if you leave any kind of salt water dry out, it will leave the salt on the surface. residue will only build up if you never wash your hair again. Doesn't mean I know anything about hair and what baking soda does to it
I've been using baking soda on my hair for several years now and my hair is just fine. HOWEVER, and it's a big however, I only shampoo every third day (sometimes 4th if I just run out of time, takes hours for my hair to dry since I don't use a hair blower and my hair is thick and long). I only use the baking soda on my scalp, not the hair follicles. I use a conditioner on the lower half of my hair to keep it from yellowing (I have snowy white hair, natural of course). I make a 32oz bottle of baking soda water--heat up the water and put about 3 tablespoons of baking soda in there and boil until completely dissolved, let it cool, put in a bottle with a cap. When I am about to shampoo, I put lemon juice (ReaLemon or equivalent works well, no need to squeeze fresh lemon unless you want to) in a squeeze bottle. The ratio is two-thirds lemon juice to one-third baking soda water. I only mix that up right before I step into the shower and do it slowly, a little soda water at a time into the lemon because it fizzles and you don't want to lose any of the liquid down the drain. I wash my scalp with it and then give my hair a good long rise. If for some reason my scalp gets itchy, it usually means I put too much baking soda in so I use less the next time, and I will do a plain water rinse on my scalp. Rinsing is essential, a good rinse to get rid of as much of the soda and oil (and dirt, sweat, etc.) as possible. I found doing an acid chaser after using baking soda wasn't good enough but mixing the acid with the soda works well for me. I also hate the smell of vinegar and, sorry, even if I stood under a waterfall for 30 mins, I can still smell the vinegar--lemon juice is only slightly less acidic than vinegar and I would like the smell of lemon, would rather smell like lemons than a salad. I've tried other ratios but this one works the best for me. It's also far cheaper than regular shampoos.
I started using sulfate, paraben and silicons free shampoos 2-3 months ago. After some time I noticed that even right after wash, my hair at the back of the head remains dirty. I googled and found about baking soda. After i put a tiny amount of baking soda i my hand and mixed it with shampoo and washed hair Like that, my hair was clean. But the next time I washed hair without baking soda, it wasnt really clean Like i wanted it to be. So now i just Max a little bit of b.s with shampoo everytime I wash hair, but it's really once a week or once at 5,6 days. After washing I put apple cider vinegar only on my scalp. Also, sometimes I put shampoo normally and then use baking soda only on the back of my head where it remains dirty for some reasons. So, my question is: in your opinion, is this going to destroy my hair?
I've been contemplating using the baking soda. This video clarified a lot of points for me, but for the diluted baking soda in the water on the black stovetop, did you leave the same water to dry after wiping or did you get another wet clean cloth to wipe it up? Because I don't quite understand that section. Is that to demonstrate after rinsing "hair and scalp"?
Hey, I wiped the stove top until it was dry. I also wiped it with a wet towel. It was meant to show the residue baking soda builds-up on the hair. Even after you "rinse it out" residue from the baking soda will build-up on your hair strands.
GreenBeauty I still don't see how that is possible as long as the hair and scalp is rinsed thoroughly?... I know appliances is different from hair but I use baking soda to clean (household items) and don't see any residue (used for over a year now). So wouldn't the person need to make sure they rinse their hair thoroughly to prevent that and maybe use apple cider vinegar (or plain vinegar) diluted to help with removing any residue that the water hasn't? Just trying to get all the information I need to start, or not to start, with my hair. Thank you for taking the time to answer.
great question, but the chemical properties that make up baking soda is what makes it stick around even though you think you have thoroughly rinsed it, its a very very fine crystal that looks like a powder so a little goes a long way. Now it would make sense to use acv to help rinse the baking soda out along with copious amounts of water. But acv is great by itself for cleaning the scalp so I would just use acv and water only
I've tried baking soda in my hair (1 part baking soda, 4 parts water), and although it did do wonders for my scalp and itchy dandruff, I was still a little dubious about long-term effects. It is baking soda, after all. After watching this, I think I'm gonna cool it with the baking soda mixture... XD
Look, this works because baking soda’s mild alkalinity turns up fatty acids contained in dirt and grease and converts it into a form of soap that can be dissolved in water and rinsed easily. To put it kind of grossly... It takes the nasty oil build up and dirt produced by your own body and environment and turns it into soap. Pleasant right? Lol. As long as you rinse with vinegar water afterwards the vinegar will yield carbon dioxide, plus water, plus sodium ion, plus acetate ion. The carbon dioxide is released when the two react. Sodium bicarbonate is a base with a pH of 11.6 in an aqueous solution (around 9 alone). Vinegar is an acid and has a pH of around 3. When combined together with water, they neutralize each other, bringing a PH acidity level to the water around 6.4-7.4 as long as you get the measurements right. You can buy a PH measuring kit online easy to make sure you are getting your mixture safe. That’s what I did and I have no complaints. I’m Native though, so I don’t know if this would need to be tweaked for hair type or if it would be good for some hair types, while perhaps over drying and not a good match for other hair types. For me, I have too many natural oils (though dryer in the winter), so it’s just right for me. 🤷🏽♀️
Wow! Thanks, I wish I was better at science! if you can can you help me? Do you know how to get it out of your hair? I spend all day washing my hair yesterday and I can't get it out even did a bentonite mask. The only reason I used it was because I used a new shampoo and after rinsing it 5 times with the hour I couldn't get the shampoo out, so I thought baking soda would probably help 😅😢 I have no idea why I thought that. I prepoo'd and diluted the shampoo I used acv and whitr vinegar lemon juice hell hydrogen peroxide. 9 hours total trying to get shampoo and baking soda out of my hair I googled and nothing except NOPOO 🙃,THANKS IN ADVANCE

I have been using baking soda to wash my hair and beard for the past month and honestly I am very happy with it... I use 1 part baking soda for 3 parts water. I am also living in a country with 60-80% humidity so I am not that bothered with dryness... By the way Alkaline is good for us, just saying.
Am glad you said so. I used it once on my still young beard and it felt so soft. I wanted to make it a habit until i read somewhere that it would destroy my hair folicles hence my facial hairs would no longer grow.
OMG, I used 1tbs of baking soda + a large glass of warm water. It's my first time, luckily my hair is so oily and I have dandruff, I think the ratio I made is enough to treat those two.
Thanks for making this video I have seborrheic dermatitis and I heard about cherry lola method as a natural remedy but I was worried about baking soda being to harsh so I never tried it.
Thank you so much for your educational videos. I would like to ask you to do a video on how best to protect our hair, if like me, you don't enjoy protective styles .
I do a baking soda dry rub on my hair, let it sit for 5 minutes brush most of it out before I rinse my hair, but I only do it once every 2 weeks, just to keep the scalp clean and clear.
So I'm glad I found your video. I had no clue but my hair texture has changed and not as easy to manage. My fear since I just did it yesterday is that I may still have baking soda processing in my hair. Can I reverse this by buying distilled water? How can I bring ph level where it needs to be. I only applied it to scalp followed by a protein treatment using egg, avocado, mayo, honey and acv...
oh sweet Jesus and apple pie you always here when is am question what should I do with my hair thanks you for the information gerl I need a clarify shampoo but everything is close right now and there is no way I will do another week with this itchy scalp
l just started the video saying in my head "Tell me everything girl, illuminate me, l'm listening" lol 😂 l used a mix of baking soda and shampoo to wash my hair while l was in transition. And it was half a mess. my new hair was clean and smooth but the relaxed hair was a biiig mess. l used too much water trying to rinse it. l almost cried in the bathroom cause the shampoo just wasn't going. Now that l'm fully natural, l use baking soda something like one time after 2 or 3months to clearify my hair. So yeah, the porosity type is an important thing to consider if you want to use baking soda to wash your hair.
It makes my hair soft... I'm guessing it easily distributes my natural oil throughout my hair. I've done it along with vinegar and it's worked well, but never used more than once or twice a month.
i have used a little bit of baking soda in my shampoo for a few months and has worked wonders for me but now i am finding out a lot of information on how the ph levels are high and how it’s not good for hair... i have straight hair and i used to have a really dry scalp but ever since i’ve used baking soda my scalp hasn’t been dry. i don’t know what to do... should i stop using it or keep using it?
I DO NOT use baking soda on my hair, never would. If I want to clarify my hair, I cut a lemon in half and squeeze it on my hair and rince with distilled water because my water is hard and it ruins my hair.
What is role of apple cider vinegar? After washing my hair with baking soda my scalp is dry and still I found dandruff but my hair are soft and light. But I want to get rid of dandruff. Please suggest something for me.
I only ever saw people with straight hair doing this. I had no idea people with natural hair were crazy enough to try it haha. I'm too risk averse when it comes to my hair.
U A I have very curly and thick hair but I mixed my shampoo and the baking soda together and it worked great. It just requires about 5 minutes of combing thru and rinsing your hair.
PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS ... so I bleached my hair and my curl pattern was wiped out BUT somehow it still is soft and retains moisture just fine AND my ends aren’t even damaged. But after that my curl began to make a slight appearance again after I’ve been babying if since the bleach. THEN I get on UA-cam and see all my Black Queens raving about the ACV/Baking soda wash and I didn’t see that it also relaxes curls prior to doing it and thinking I was using an AMAZING alternative to shampoo and not even thinking it was possibly ruining my hair I now after seeing this look back in hindsight and realized since then my curls that were starting to come back are wayyyyy straight now and way thinner. BUT I don’t get how that’s possible for my curl pattern to be so destroyed and thin yet my hair is soooo moisturized isn’t breaking AND it’s longer than ever right now... ANY ADVICE or IDEAS about what I can do will help. I’m kind of freaking out and mind you I have a really different hair texture it’s super curly but also super fine so finding a balance and what will work for my hair has been really hard. And I know it’s a learning journey but I can’t seem to figure out what my hair likes and dislikes without totally damaging it on accident first and having to start alllll over. In addition cutting it off is not an option for me rn especially since other than the curl everything else appears to be fine so wearing it in twist outs and stuff where I just straighten my roots out to match makes it appear healthy and I’ve worked sooooo hard getting it to this length if I have to do twist outs the next year I will lol 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗 thanks to anyone that even takes the time to read this lol

Thank you so much for this video! I have also read the conflicting reports about the effects of using baking soda on hair and decided that the risks far outweigh the potential benefits. Are you going to address the Cherry Lola treatment in one of the next 2 videos?

Sorry just seeing this a year later. Finger detangle ends to roots gently any dry hair wiith oil first before grabbing a comb. Better to use a oil that has small molecules and moisturizes the hair. There are many different oils thin and thick. I like jojoba and moringa oil personally. Castor oil or shea butter on my ends when dry. You also might need a product to support the holes in your hair like temporary hair repair solutions until it grows out. Resist combing hair when wet as well it could lead to more breakage. Baking soda is sticky. I’ve used it and lemon juice to clean and sterilize my countertops, and I discontinued that because I had to rinse 3x before the counters weren’t sticky. Great video! Could you please do a video on using castile soap as an alternative to shampoo?
You continue to school me girl!!! Thank You !! Thank You!!
Doesn't mean I know anything about hair and what baking soda does to it
What if you use apple cider vinegar to rinse it out after?
Is that to demonstrate after rinsing "hair and scalp"?
i3abikay Great questions!
But acv is great by itself for cleaning the scalp so I would just use acv and water only
mizzmarlowe Great answer! Lol. And she did mention this in a video, so it makes sense. 😊
The ONLY time I EVER used b.s. on my hair is for a loc detox with Apple cider vinegar.
We used baking soda and ACV to build erupting volcanoes. Can't image that would be a safe mix. Looking forward to more videos.. TFS
XD
Wow i was actually gonna try baking soda to clarify my hair...thanks green beauty
Really appreciate the layout and informative nature of your video.
What about changing the ph with acv?
Or witch hazel
Thank you soo much❤️❤️❤️😊😊never tried baking soda 😥soo appreciate ur info ❤️❤️❤️
Definitely not using it as a hair product now thank you very much
Awesome work as always. Thanks for the time and effort you put into lifting up and educating this community. I love what you are doing. Makes my heart so happy
Thank You 😊
I have been using baking soda to wash my hair and beard for the past month and honestly I am very happy with it...
Great, informative video as always.
I can always come here to be educated. Thanks
Thank you for this! Definitely too much incomplete and misleading information out there! This helps me a lot!
Just watched this video on time before it was too late 😊
OMG, I used 1tbs of baking soda + a large glass of warm water. It's my first time, luckily my hair is so oily and I have dandruff, I think the ratio I made is enough to treat those two.
Thanks for making this video I have seborrheic dermatitis and I heard about cherry lola method as a natural remedy but I was worried about baking soda being to harsh so I never tried it.
Baking soda relaxer? I've only heard of the lime and the coconut treatment...that has cornstarch in it
Thank you so much for your educational videos. I would like to ask you to do a video on how best to protect our hair, if like me, you don't enjoy protective styles .
i think i will stick to acv
easier to dilute and wash out
Thanks for the info!! Very interesting!!
Hi great job explaining! I love your channel.
Him, very insightful. Thank you so much. I subbed. Great content
#Enlightment. Can't wait for the Baking Soda x ACV rinse vid
Hi can you make a video on keratin hair treatments?
oh sweet Jesus and apple pie you always here when is am question what should I do with my hair thanks you for the information gerl I need a clarify shampoo but everything is close right now and there is no way I will do another week with this itchy scalp
l just started the video saying in my head "Tell me everything girl, illuminate me, l'm listening" lol 😂
l used a mix of baking soda and shampoo to wash my hair while l was in transition.
What is the difference between baking soda and baking powder and would that difference affect anything in terms of the pros and cons?
Baking Powder has baking soda in it but it is not pure baking soda. I'm not sure how baking powder will interact with hair.
It makes my hair soft... I'm guessing it easily distributes my natural oil throughout my hair. I've done it along with vinegar and it's worked well, but never used more than once or twice a month.
I heard that natural baking soda has a lower ph level which is roughly the same as the sea water ph. is that right?
What if I mix baking soda with a low ph substance like coffee 4.5. It has hair benefits too.
I had to big chop my hair after trying the Lola treatment that requires baking soda.... It damaged my hair so bad, I just took myself to a barber shop
i have used a little bit of baking soda in my shampoo for a few months and has worked wonders for me but now i am finding out a lot of information on how the ph levels are high and how it’s not good for hair... i have straight hair and i used to have a really dry scalp but ever since i’ve used baking soda my scalp hasn’t been dry. i don’t know what to do... should i stop using it or keep using it?
I would definitely stop using it if I were you. But, if you must ... try limiting the frequency of how often you use it.
What can I use to treat my dandruff
It is very "aggressive"
I DO NOT use baking soda on my hair, never would. If I want to clarify my hair, I cut a lemon in half and squeeze it on my hair and rince with distilled water because my water is hard and it ruins my hair.
A better way to look at it, is your scalp oily oily? If not proceed with caution
Excited for this series :)
What is role of apple cider vinegar? After washing my hair with baking soda my scalp is dry and still I found dandruff but my hair are soft and light. But I want to get rid of dandruff. Please suggest something for me.

I've always thought people who used baking soda on their hair is crazy. That stuff is used to scrub toilets!
I think everyone's case might be different. Because it works on my hair.
Grace so I can't just smooth the shampoo and baking soda into my hair, let it sit and rinse?
alldatzyall it requires a lot of massaging to get it all out and you should spend more time rinsing it when there is baking soda
How often can I use it if I have an oily scalp. I used it once and worked great but it went oily again after 2 days. If I use it often in small quantities will it do a better job and be more healthy?
I used baking soda/water before washing my hair with shampoo yesterday. I have Really bad dandruff. I'm trying to find a solution n so far it seems ok.
Thank you so much for this video! I have also read the conflicting reports about the effects of using baking soda on hair and decided that the risks far outweigh the potential benefits. Are you going to address the Cherry Lola treatment in one of the next 2 videos?
No, I decided not to mention anything about the Cherry Lola Treatment b/c I don't want to knock anyone's method. I'll just stick to an analysis of the specific ingredients 😊
GreenBeauty That is very gracious of you!
Vigorol Vs. Texurizer what is the difference? Is one more dangerous to hair or not?
I wish I saw this before doing the baking soda clarifier for dyed hair.. I can't even run my fingers through my hair completely messed up my hair any tips on how t restore it
Sorry just seeing this a year later.
Peace blessings & 🖤💚💛
But isn’t baking soda also used for hair removal?? Won’t this promote hair loss???
I wish I would put this mess in my hair. I can only imagine how damaging it could be to high porosity hair.
nikqualuv09 😨
Agree...and glad to see other HiPo owners like me, lol. Green Beauty rightly says protein is our friend but my fluff is not sure.
Any tips to share?
SoLurvly.SoNerdy Oh yay, i always get excited when I see another HiPo gal! It's like EVERYONE'S LoPo! Protein isn't working for you? Is it more of a challenge to get moisture in on keep moisture in? What kind of protein are you using and how often?
+nikqualuv09 Yes me too, had to control my excitement earlier as I typed!
My hair is everything uncommon on YT: dry, very fine, delicate, sheds heaps, greying, tangles easily, doesn't keep shiny or curly, oh and did I mention dry, lol. Using Eve Nye protein conditioner, and OGX Fibre Full leave-in. what do you use?
SoLurvly.SoNerdy Lol. Sounds like mine, except for the gray part. My hair so disrespectful it's not even funny! 😣
you are awesome!! I LOVE your videos
Thank you for sharing this video
Hi I am planning to use the baking soda diluted in water to add to my shampoo conditioner to remove brassy tone from my gray hair. I am desperate to brighten my silver hair and all the recommended purple shampoos and conditioners doesn’t work for 4C natural hair. Please help me! I feel that I have to keep my nasty brassy hair hidden instead of embracing it 🙏🏾
The PH issue is WHY you are suppose use a vinegar/water rinse immediately afterwards..
Baking soda is sticky. I’ve used it and lemon juice to clean and sterilize my countertops, and I discontinued that because I had to rinse 3x before the counters weren’t sticky. Just using lemon juice did not make them sticky. So when you use baking soda on your hair, it’s leaving a sticky residue on every strand.
Will this prevent hair loss?
No really, it just provides a deep cleanse
Wow I didn't know all these things
If you're going to use it, dilute it don't use more than a tsp with 5 cups of water.
I am going to try it but not do it constantly because I need to get rid of my dandruff asap
