  • This is video tutorial, demonstrating how I make a closed peony center, for either a bud or a closed style peony. SUBSCRIBE for new videos every Tuesday!
    I love peonies, they are beautiful flowers. While time consuming to create, they make for a beautiful bold statement flower on wedding or special occasion cakes! They are a large flower so you don't need too many to cover a lot of space!
    If you want to see how to make an open peony (my personal favorite!) check out my "Part 1" video, which covers an open peony start to finish. Part 1 also shows how to make the wired, outer petals so you can make a full blossom, even if you prefer the closed center. Check it out here: • How to Make an Open Gu...

    If you used the Petal Crafts Peony Cutter, you didn't have to make any adjustments plus it comes with the 2-sided veiner already, works really well.

    Great tutorial! Do you prefer a metal ball tool? Or does it make a difference? TY ♡

    • @reneeconner
      @reneeconner  8 років тому

      I like the metal ball tool because I feel like it runs more smoothly over the gumpaste. That being said, I've recently started using a cel pin (grabbed it when I couldn't find my ball tool) and it works great! As long as your chosen tool is nice and solid without any give (it will end up hurting your wrist) and without any seams it's just a matter of what you have and what you like.

    thank you for the tutorial! I also have a question, i need to make a peony that looks like the one pictured in your video. I want the center to be closed and the outer petals to be open. Would I make the closed center using the Styrofoam ball like you did in this video and then make separate petals on wired and after they're dry attach them as you did in the next video? Please and than you!!

    • @reneeconner
      @reneeconner  9 років тому

      Hi Evelyn, yes... you would make the center as I did in this video (you can add even more layers for a fuller looking center), and then make the wired petals, like I did in my "Open Peony Video" and then assemble those onto the center :) Good Luck!

    • @reneeconner
      @reneeconner  7 років тому

      To make it easy on yourself start as far ahead as possible. Store them in an airtight container in a cool/dry location and they should keep perfectly.

    Hii. How would you make them without wire? Any suggestions..

    • @reneeconner
      @reneeconner  9 років тому

      lioness76071 Make all of the petals w/o inserting wires, allow them to dry. Then use a small disc of gumpaste as a base and attach each petal with a little royal icing or white chocolate building from the outer petals to the center. Good Luck!

      lioness76071 if you needed a substitute for the wire use spaghetti, it's nice and sturdy, or use a skewer.

    Also, is the petals just white in colour?

    • @reneeconner
      @reneeconner  10 років тому

      For this video I was using a very, very pale pink. You can use whatever color you'd like. You can always go back and color them at the end, with petal dusts.

    can i also do with fondant?

    • @reneeconner
      @reneeconner  10 років тому +1

      I don't like to use fondant for flowers, because I find I can't roll it as thin and doesn't dry fast enough to hold it's shape. If you want to use fondant, I'd suggest you at least add tylose powder to stiffen it up and speed up drying time.

    Can I use water instead of gum glue?

    • @reneeconner
      @reneeconner  10 років тому

      I do not recommend using just water, the gum glue is tackier and creates a better bond. With water, the petals are a lot more likely to slide around.

    What's the point of making edible flowers and using foam ball and wire, maybe something else can be used so the cake would be safe to cut and eat as is?

    • @reneeconner
      @reneeconner  7 років тому +2

      Most people would not eat sugar flowers, they are often saved as a keepsake. You could always make a ball of gumpaste as the center and then attach it to a skewer, then attach all of the petals to the ball. It would be edible (minus the skewer). However, in my opinion wired petals look much more realistic and the foam ball keeps the flower from bing incredibly heavy. It is extremely common practice to use these items in sugar flowers. My clients appreciate the art of a hand-made decoration, even if it can't be eaten. It is however, safe to use as decoration on a cake (so long as the wires are properly inserted into a straw first), where as some real flowers and most artificial flowers are not safe for contact with food.
